    A “Do-It-Yourself” (DIY) IS Strategic Planning Methodology for SMEs

    Modern businesses face increased levels of competitive pressure, a turbulent business environment, and there is ongoing debate as to whether IT can continue to create competitive advantage in the modern era. The study described in this paper is work-in-progress towards a PhD. The primary aim of the research is to examine the relationship between Information Systems Strategic Planning (ISSP) and Enterprise Architectural Practice (EAP) ,in New Zealand (NZ) enterprises, from both theoretical and empirical points of view, and, if there is significant overlap, explore the feasibility of combining the two activities into a single, coherent process. These issues had not previously been investigated, and the outcomes are believed to be new knowledge. This paper describes the latest research phase: combining ISSP and EAP methods to create a DIY IS strategic planning methodology for small or medium enterprises (SMEs). As SMEs constitute an important sector of most modern economies, this is a potentially significant outcome for small business management and IS practice

    Modern businesses face increased levels of competitive pressure, and the IT sector is going through a period of rapid change. The past two decades have seen a steady evolution of approaches to planning and managing IT services. Two approaches that have emerged in different eras are IS Strategic Planning (ISSP) and Enterprise Architectural Practice (EAP). Despite the apparent similarities between these two approaches, neither IS researchers, nor practitioners, have explored the relationship in any depth. This paper investigates the relationship between ISSP and EAP, utilising results from case studies conducted in New Zealand (NZ) enterprises. It concludes that there is a significant overlap between these two activities, and suggests a framework for combining them. The paper also investigates some collateral findings relating to the low incidence of IS strategic planning in small/medium enterprises (SMEs)

    The Use Of Visual Recognition Testing In Spelling By Fourth Grade Children

    According to Simon and Simon (1973), much of a child\u27s spelling knowledge can only be retrieved from memory storage when written spellings are available as retrieval cues. A child who cannot immediately recall a correct spelling, therefore, may be able to make a decision by writing out trial spellings and \u27testing\u27 them for recognition.;Five experiments were conducted to test Simon\u27s model. The results of Experiments 1 and 2, in accordance with the model, showed that fourth-grade children were able to recognize whether or not their own spelling attempts were correct, and to discriminate between correct and incorrect spellings of words which they could not spell to dictation. Moreover, when they were given a choice between misspellings which they had themselves produced twice in exactly the same form and correct spellings of the same words, they chose the correct spellings in the majority of instances. These results indicate that children do have information available in memory which they are unable to retrieve and apply in the initial production of written spellings.;Experiment 3 tested the hypothesis that visual cues contribute to spelling decisions by facilitating access to information stored in memory. In this experiment, children were required to choose between visually or orally presented alternatives for words which they had not been able to spell to dictation. As predicted, the children made significantly more correct choices in the visual presentation condition than in the oral presentation condition.;Simon\u27s model was tested further in Experiments 4 and 5 by encouraging children to use visual recognition testing and assessing the effects on their spelling performance. In both experiments, subjects who were prompted to use the recognition testing strategies described by Simon produced significantly fewer errors than control subjects who had no opportunity to use these strategies.;The results from these five studies support Simon\u27s contention that children have spelling information available in memory storage which they do not use in the production of their initial spelling attempts. Visual testing of written trial spellings facilitates the retrieval of this information from memory storage and contributes in a substantial way to spelling decisions

BKD is compared with several other ligand-based tools for virtual screening in databases of 2D structures represented by fragment bit-strings, and is shown to provide an effective, and reasonably efficient, way of prioritising compounds for biological screening

    Controls on the transport of oceanic heat to Kangerdlugssuaq Glacier, East Greenland

    Greenland's marine-terminating glaciers may be sensitive to oceanic heat, but the fjord processes controlling delivery of this heat to glacier termini remain poorly constrained. Here we use a three-dimensional numerical model of Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord, East Greenland, to examine controls on fjord/shelf exchange. We find that shelf-forced intermediary circulation can replace up to ~25% of the fjord volume with shelf waters within 10 d, while buoyancy-driven circulation (forced by subglacial runoff from marine-terminating glaciers) exchanges ~10% of the fjord volume over a 10 d period under typical summer conditions. However, while the intermediary circulation generates higher exchange rates between the fjord and shelf, the buoyancy-driven circulation is consistent over time hence more efficient at transporting water along the full length of the fjord. We thus find that buoyancy-driven circulation is the primary conveyor of oceanic heat to glaciers during the melt season. Intermediary circulation will however dominate during winter unless there is sufficient input of fresh water from subglacial melting. Our findings suggest that increasing shelf water temperatures and stronger buoyancy-driven circulation caused the heat available for melting at Kangerdlugssuaq Glacier to increase by ~50% between 1993–2001 and 2002–11, broadly coincident with the onset of rapid retreat at this glacier

    International audienceOriginal acceleration procedures are proposed for the efficient calculation of the vertical components of the dyadic and scalar mixed-potential layered-media periodic Green's functions for various types of periodic structures. The extraction of suitable asymptotic terms, i.e., quasi-static images, is performed in order to speed up the convergence of the relevant spectral series. The extracted terms can be expressed as potentials for array of half-plane and half-line sources, depending on the type of the considered periodic Green's function. The relevant numerical results show the remarkable improvements in the efficiency of the approach
