The present article presents the Diccionari ortogràfic i de pronúncia (DOP) by Jordi Bruguera, published in 1990, in the context of the almost simultaneous appearance of a work which is fundamental to the study of Catalan pronunciation: the Proposta per a un estàndard oral de la llengua catalana. I Fonètica (PEOF), published by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. This is followed by an analysis of the real extent of unreduced a, e and o in Latinisms and Italianisms in DOP, a phenomenon not covered in PEOF. The results show, for example, that unstressed a, e and o in Latinisms are not reduced in expressions containing more than one word or in abbreviations of other lexical expressions. Likewise, these vowels are not reduced in Italianisms related to music in the field of kinetics. On the other hand, they are reduced in practically all historical Italianisms
Privacy-preserving data outsourcing in the cloud via semantic data splitting
Even though cloud computing provides many intrinsic benefits, privacy
concerns related to the lack of control over the storage and management of the
outsourced data still prevent many customers from migrating to the cloud.
Several privacy-protection mechanisms based on a prior encryption of the data
to be outsourced have been proposed. Data encryption offers robust security,
but at the cost of hampering the efficiency of the service and limiting the
functionalities that can be applied over the (encrypted) data stored on cloud
premises. Because both efficiency and functionality are crucial advantages of
cloud computing, in this paper we aim at retaining them by proposing a
privacy-protection mechanism that relies on splitting (clear) data, and on the
distributed storage offered by the increasingly popular notion of multi-clouds.
We propose a semantically-grounded data splitting mechanism that is able to
automatically detect pieces of data that may cause privacy risks and split them
on local premises, so that each chunk does not incur in those risks; then,
chunks of clear data are independently stored into the separate locations of a
multi-cloud, so that external entities cannot have access to the whole
confidential data. Because partial data are stored in clear on cloud premises,
outsourced functionalities are seamlessly and efficiently supported by just
broadcasting queries to the different cloud locations. To enforce a robust
privacy notion, our proposal relies on a privacy model that offers a priori
privacy guarantees; to ensure its feasibility, we have designed heuristic
algorithms that minimize the number of cloud storage locations we need; to show
its potential and generality, we have applied it to the least structured and
most challenging data type: plain textual documents
TXT as a vehicle for service learning
Service-learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines
academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community.
As a teaching methodology, it falls under the philosophy of experiential education.
More specifically, it integrates meaningful community service with instruction and
reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, encourage
lifelong civic engagement, and strengthen communities for the common good.
Technology for everybody (TXT) is an association of people from the computer
science and telecommunication schools at UPC. The main goal is to share our
knowledge in Information and Communication Technology to communities that
may benefit. In the last few years we have seen how technology has changed our
everyday life and has became an inner part of a modern society. Lack of access to
this knowledge enlarges the distance between communities. In this context, people
in TXT aim to narrow the gap by providing technical knowledge to nongovernmental
social institutions where this information could be useful.
Another important task for TXT is building student's community awareness of
international and local cooperation. The association tries to engage students into
taking civil responsibilities, at the same time their learning experience are enriched.
To that aim TxT runs the reuse workshop (among other projects); this initiative is
managed by the Center of Cooperation and Development (CCD) the Technical
University in Catalonia (UPC) and the association Technology for Everybody
(TXT). It is a hands-on session where participants learn how to repair a computer.Peer Reviewe
An introduction to parametric and non-parametric models for bivariate positive insurance claim severity distributions
We present a real data set of claims amounts where costs related to damage are recorded separately from those related to medical expenses. Only claims with positive costs are considered here. Two approaches to density estimation are presented: a classical parametric and a semi-parametric method, based on transformation kernel density estimation. We explore the data set with standard univariate methods. We also propose ways to select the bandwidth and transformation parameters in the univariate case based on Bayesian methods. We indicate how to compare the results of alternative methods both looking at the shape of the overall density domain and exploring the density estimates in the right tail.
Per a l’observació i l’anàlisi d’aquestes tendències lligades a la variació geogràfica s’ha tingut en compte un corpus format per 80 capítols d’un total de 20 sèries de producció pròpia de TV3, d’IB3 i de Canal 9.This article discusses the purpose of the mediatedcolloquial register in relation to the geographic (or diatopic)variation of characters in nationally-producedtelevision series. The trends observed enable us todistinguish two new concepts: autodiatopic variationand alterdiatopic variation. These two types of variationare at the service of audiovisual credibility, whichis precisely the purpose the mediated colloquial registerin television series. The observation and analysis of these trends linkedto geographic (or diatopic) variation took into accounta corpus formed by 80 episodes from a total of 20national television series produced by TV3, IB3 andChannel 9.El artículo aborda el propósito del registro coloquialmediatizado en relación con la variación geográfica(o diatópica) de los personajes de las series de televisiónde producción propia.
