    Influence of Gender and Den Type on Home Range Shape for Striped Skunks, Mephitis mephitis, in Saskatchewan

    We investigated gender differences in shape of home ranges for Striped Skunks, Mephitis mephitis, in southcentral Saskatchewan, Canada, during 1993-1994. Data collected on free-ranging Striped Skunks indicated that shape of female home ranges was unaffected by den type (building versus burrow) and was similar to shape of male home ranges. Moreover, type of maternity den did not influence the position of the den within the home range (inside or outside of core area). We conclude that the distribution of Striped Skunks in summer, and the distribution of their foraging activity, are not affected by the availability of anthropogenic den structures

    How Best Should We Manage Hybrid Poplar Plantations? Interactions of Site Preparation, Vegetation Control and Fertilization

    The silviculture of hybrid poplars is a promising solution to reduce the pressure on natural forests while maintaining the wood supply to industries. However, hybrid poplars are sensitive to competing vegetation and to inadequate soil conditions and fertility. Possible management tools include mechanical site preparation (MSP), vegetation control, and fertilization. We present here the results after five years of growth for eight formerly forested sites (40 hectares total) on Podzols in the province of Quebec, Canada. The experimental design combines four MSP treatments (harrowing, scarifying, mounding, and no preparation) with four frequencies of plant competition control by brushing (from never to once a year) and N or N+P fertilization. The best growth was found in the following MSP treatments: mounding \u3e harrowing \u3e scarifying \u3e none. The effect of competition control is more evident on the more productive sites and in the less severe preparation treatments, which brings insight into the Grime-Tilman debate over the importance and intensity of competition. Fertilization can provide substantial improvement in immediate growth, although it does not seem to compensate for deficient root systems. We will discuss the causes and implications of our results for future management strategies of hybrid poplar plantations

    Avoiding ecosystem collapse in managed forest ecosystems

    Many forest ecosystems are thought to be at risk of ecological collapse, which is broadly defined as an abrupt, long-lasting, and widespread change in ecosystem state and dynamics that has major negative impacts on biodiversity and key ecosystem services. However, there is currently a limited ability to accurately predict the risk of collapse for a given forest ecosystem. Moreover, how ecosystem collapse manifests itself will be ecosystem specific, as will be the associated mitigation strategies. In light of these challenges, we present a checklist of 11 practical principles to help managers reduce the risk of ecosystem collapse. These principles include developing a robust definition of collapse that is appropriate for a given ecosystem, managing for multiple ecosystem stressors under increasing uncertainty, adopting conservative approaches to management that account for potential losses of timber resources and limit the risk of overharvesting, and conducting long-term monitoring to gather data on key ecosystem attributes sensitive to ecological change

    Conception d'un contrôleur adaptatif et implantation sur un système de climatisation à débit d'air variable

    Dans la plupart des cas, les systèmes de climatisation sont équipés de contrôleur proportionnel et intégral (PI). Leur fonction est de maintenir le paramètre contrôlé sur la valeur de référence ou point de consigne. Pourtant, plusieurs cas d'oscillation de température d'air d'alimentation ont été observés sur les systèmes à volume d'air variable (VAV). Les cas d'instabilité observés sont occasionnés par une politique d'ajustement des contrôleurs PI élaboré selon des paramètres PI prédéfinis. Pour éviter ce problème, un contrôleur adaptif est proposé. Ce contrôleur adaptatif identifie la dynamique du système en ligne avec un algorithme récursif dans le but d'ajuster adéquatement les paramètres PI du contrôleur. Pour traiter le problème ci haut mentionné, nous avons cherché des concepts de contrôle existants pour ensuite choisir les meilleurs et constituer le contrôleur adaptatif. Enfin nous avons programmé les algorithmes du contrôleur adaptatif sur un microcontrôleur ATmega16 et l'avons installé sur un des systèmes VAV étudié pour effectuer le test final. Les résultats obtenus permettent de conclure que le contrôleur adaptatif proposé permet une plus grande stabilité que le contrôleur PI de référence caractérisé par des paramètres PI prédéfinis

    Limits on isotropic Lorentz violation in QED from collider physics

    We consider the possibility that Lorentz violation can generate differences between the limiting velocities of light and charged matter. Such effects would lead to efficient vacuum Cherenkov radiation or rapid photon decay. The absence of such effects for 104.5 GeV electrons at the Large Electron Positron collider and for 300 GeV photons at the Tevatron therefore constrains this type of Lorentz breakdown. Within the context of the standard-model extension, these ideas imply an experimental bound at the level of -5.8 x 10^{-12} <= \tilde{\kappa}_{tr}-(4/3)c_e^{00} <= 1.2 x 10^{-11} tightening existing laboratory measurements by 3-4 orders of magnitude.     Managing understory light conditions in boreal mixedwoods through variation in the intensity and spatial pattern of harvest: A modelling approach

    In the context of partial harvesting, adequately managing post-harvest light conditions are essential to obtain a desired composition of tree species regeneration. The objective of this study was to determine how varying the intensity and spatial pattern of harvest would affect understory light conditions in boreal mixedwood stands of northwestern Quebec using the spatially explicit SORTIE-ND light model. The model was evaluated based on comparisons of observed and predicted light levels in both mapped and un-mapped plots. In mapped plots, reasonably accurate predictions of the overall variation in light levels were obtained, but predictions tended to lack spatial precision. In un-mapped plots, SORTIE-ND accurately predicted stand-level mean GLI (Gap Light Index) under a range of harvest intensities. The model was then used to simulate nine silvicultural treatments based on combinations of three intensities of overstory removal (30%, 45% and 60% of basal area) and three harvest patterns (uniform, narrow strips, large gaps). Simulations showed that increasing overstory removal had less impact on light conditions with uniform harvests, and a more marked effect with more aggregated harvest patterns. Whatever the harvest intensity, uniform cuts almost never created high light conditions (GLI > 50%). Gap cuts, on the other hand, resulted in up to 40% of microsites receiving GLI > 50%. Our results suggest that either a 30% strip or gap cut or a 45–60% uniform partial harvest could be used to accelerate the transition from an aspen dominated composition to a mixedwood stand because both types of cut generate the greatest proportion of moderately low light levels (e.g., 15–40% GLI). These light levels tend to favour an accelerated growth response among shade-tolerant conifers, while preventing excessive recruitment of shade-intolerant species. A better understanding of how spatial patterns of harvest interact with tree removal intensity to affect understory light conditions can provide opportunities for designing silvicultural prescriptions that are tailored to species’ traits and better suited to meet a variety of management objectives

    Rapid Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables. XVI. DW Cancri

    We report photometry and spectroscopy of the novalike variable DW Cancri. The spectra show the usual broad H and He emission lines, with an excitation and continuum slope characteristic of a moderately high accretion rate. A radial-velocity search yields strong detections at two periods, 86.1015(3) min and 38.58377(6) min. We interpret these as respectively the orbital period P_orb of the binary, and the spin period P_spin of a magnetic white dwarf. The light curve also shows the spin period, plus an additional strong signal at 69.9133(10) min, which coincides with the difference frequency 1/P_spin-1/P_orb. These periods are stable over the 1 year baseline of measurement. This triply-periodic structure mimics the behavior of several well-credentialed members of the "DQ Herculis" (intermediate polar) class of cataclysmic variables. DQ Her membership is also suggested by the mysteriously strong sideband signal (at nu_spin-nu_orb), attesting to a strong pulsed flux at X-ray/EUV/UV wavelengths.     A Bayesian approach to star-galaxy classification

    Star-galaxy classification is one of the most fundamental data-processing tasks in survey astronomy, and a critical starting point for the scientific exploitation of survey data. For bright sources this classification can be done with almost complete reliability, but for the numerous sources close to a survey's detection limit each image encodes only limited morphological information. In this regime, from which many of the new scientific discoveries are likely to come, it is vital to utilise all the available information about a source, both from multiple measurements and also prior knowledge about the star and galaxy populations. It is also more useful and realistic to provide classification probabilities than decisive classifications. All these desiderata can be met by adopting a Bayesian approach to star-galaxy classification, and we develop a very general formalism for doing so. An immediate implication of applying Bayes's theorem to this problem is that it is formally impossible to combine morphological measurements in different bands without using colour information as well; however we develop several approximations that disregard colour information as much as possible. The resultant scheme is applied to data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS), and tested by comparing the results to deep Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 measurements of the same sources. The Bayesian classification probabilities obtained from the UKIDSS data agree well with the deep SDSS classifications both overall (a mismatch rate of 0.022, compared to 0.044 for the UKIDSS pipeline classifier) and close to the UKIDSS detection limit (a mismatch rate of 0.068 compared to 0.075 for the UKIDSS pipeline classifier). The Bayesian formalism developed here can be applied to improve the reliability of any star-galaxy classification schemes based on the measured values of morphology statistics alone.Comment: Accepted 22 November 2010, 19 pages, 17 figure

    Spatially explicit simulation of long-term boreal forest landscape dynamics: incorporating quantitative stand attributes

    Spatial simulation models of long-term dynamics of forest landscapes are needed for investigating how different actual or potential disturbance regimes determine the structure and dynamics of forest landscapes. We propose a new approach to bridge the forest stand and landscape processes. Hence, while interested in the boreal forest dynamics at the landscape level, we develop a submodel of stand-level forest dynamics that responds to the landscape-level processes in a spatially explicit landscape model. Compared to the LANDIS model that we used as a starting point, our approach incorporates, in a spatially explicit and quantitative manner: (1) stand-level prediction of basal area and tree volume, and (2) seed dispersal, and sexual and asexual regeneration. Stand development is partly based on growth tables given as model input which means that stand submodel behavior is constrained within a reasonable range. We tested the approach in simulating the development of mixed boreal forests of Quebec, Canada. The simulations demonstrate that stand dynamics can be calibrated to match specific targets and that responses to changes in the initial conditions are realistic. This new modeling approach should allow addressing various theoretical questions and developing, as well as testing, alternative silvicultural and forest management scenarios
