    Combining motility and bioluminescent signalling aids mate finding in deep-sea fish: a simulation study

    We present a model to estimate the mean time required for mate finding among deep-sea fish as a function of motility and the extent of bioluminescent signalling. This model differs from those of previous works in 3 important ways by including (1) sex differences in motility, (2) a maximum detection range of bioluminescent signals derived from a recently published mechanistic model based on physical principles and the physiology of vision, and (3) a novel consideration of the likelihood of individuals passing within detection range only in the interval between flashes and hence, failing to detect the signaller. We argue that the flash rates required for effective detection are low, with rates of less than 1 per minute being entirely plausible, and that predation pressure may further encourage low flash rates. Further, even at high flash frequencies, the energetic cost of bioluminescent signalling is argued to be a trivial fraction of resting metabolic rates. Using empirically derived estimates for parameter values, we estimate that a female will be detected and reached by a male within 2 to 4 h of beginning to signal. Hence, we argue that mate finding may not seriously restrict reproductive success in species that can exploit this signalling system. We further argue that where male motility allows bioluminescent signalling, this may have some advantages over chemical-based signalling. Bioluminescent signalling may, therefore, be more important to mate finding in the deep sea (relative to chemical signals) than some previous works have suggested

    Searching speeds and the energetic feasibility of an obligate whale-scavenging fish

    Two recently published models reach opposite conclusions on the energetic feasibility of a scavenging fish that specialises oil whale carcasses. We argue that the key difference between these models lies in their estimate of the likely searching speed of such a hypothetical scavenger. Neither of the previous models considers that although faster searching will allow food sites to be found more quickly, it will also reduce the time between meals that the fish can survive on its reserves. Hence, we present a novel model that encapsulates this trade-off, and use this model to predict the optimal searching speed for Such a hypothetical scavenger. The model predicts that the optimal speed should increase with mass and be in the range 0.1-0.2 m s(-1) for fish of the range of sizes found for the ubiquitous grenadier Coryphaenoides armatus. These values accord with most estimates of the swimming speeds for this species. Hence, we conclude that rejection of a whale-carcass feeding specialist fish on energetic grounds is premature. Although, we see no reason to dismiss Such a specialist oil energetic grounds, we argue that such a fish will be unlikely oil ecological grounds, although a deep-sea fish that gathered much of its energy from scavenging at relatively large food packages oil the ocean floor should be feasible

    AbstractVascular pathologies are associated with changes in the presence and expression of morphologically distinct vascular smooth muscle cells. In particular, in complex human vascular lesions and models of disease in pigs and rodents, an intimal smooth muscle cell (iSMC) which exhibits a stable epithelioid or rhomboid phenotype in culture is often found to be present in high numbers, and may represent the reemergence of a distinct developmental vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype. The CYP450-oxylipin - soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) pathway is currently of great interest in targeting for cardiovascular disease. sEH inhibitors limit the development of hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis and aneurysm formation in animal models. We have investigated the expression of CYP450-oxylipin-sEH pathway enzymes and their metabolites in paired intimal (iSMC) and medial (mSMC) cells isolated from rat aorta. iSMC basally released significantly larger amounts of epoxy-oxylipin CYP450 products from eicosapentaenoic acidΒ >Β docosahexaenoic acidΒ >Β arachidonic acidΒ >Β linoleic acid, and expressed higher levels of CYP2C12, CYP2B1, but not CYP2J mRNA compared to mSMC. When stimulated with the pro-inflammatory TLR4 ligand LPS, epoxy-oxylipin production did not change greatly in iSMC. In contrast, LPS induced epoxy-oxylipin products in mSMC and induced CYP2J4. iSMC and mSMC express sEH which metabolizes primary epoxy-oxylipins to their dihydroxy-counterparts. The sEH inhibitors TPPU or AUDA inhibited LPS-induced NFΞΊB activation and iNOS induction in mSMC, but had no effect on NFΞΊB nuclear localization or inducible nitric oxide synthase in iSMC; effects which were recapitulated in part by addition of authentic epoxy-oxylipins. iSMCs are a rich source but not a sensor of anti-inflammatory epoxy-oxylipins. Complex lesions that contain high levels of iSMCs may be more resistant to the protective effects of sEH inhibitors

    We record what is known about the closed forms for various Bessel function moments arising in quantum field theory, condensed matter theory and other parts of mathematical physics. More generally, we develop formulae for integrals of products of six or fewer Bessel functions. In consequence, we are able to discover and prove closed forms for cn,k:=∫0∞tkK0n(t)dtc_{n,k}:=\int_0^\infty t^k K_0^n(t) {\rm d}t with integers n=1,2,3,4n=1,2,3,4 and kβ‰₯0k\ge0, obtaining new results for the even moments c3,2kc_{3,2k} and c4,2kc_{4,2k}. We also derive new closed forms for the odd moments sn,2k+1:=∫0∞t2k+1I0(t)K0nβˆ’1(t)dts_{n,2k+1}:=\int_0^\infty t^{2k+1}I_0^{}(t) K_0^{n-1}(t) {\rm d}t with n=3,4n=3,4 and for tn,2k+1:=∫0∞t2k+1I02(t)K0nβˆ’2(t)dtt_{n,2k+1}:=\int_0^\infty t^{2k+1}I_0^2(t) K_0^{n-2}(t) {\rm d}t with n=5n=5, relating the latter to Green functions on hexagonal, diamond and cubic lattices. We conjecture the values of s5,2k+1s_{5,2k+1}, make substantial progress on the evaluation of c5,2k+1c_{5,2k+1}, s6,2k+1s_{6,2k+1} and t6,2k+1t_{6,2k+1} and report more limited progress regarding c5,2kc_{5,2k}, c6,2k+1c_{6,2k+1} and c6,2kc_{6,2k}. In the process, we obtain 8 conjectural evaluations, each of which has been checked to 1200 decimal places. One of these lies deep in 4- dimensional quantum field theory and two are probably provable by delicate combinatorics.     Therapeutic efficacy of favipiravir against Bourbon virus in mice

    Bourbon virus (BRBV) is an emerging tick-borne RNA virus in the orthomyxoviridae family that was discovered in 2014. Although fatal human cases of BRBV have been described, little is known about its pathogenesis, and no antiviral therapies or vaccines exist. We obtained serum from a fatal case in 2017 and successfully recovered the second human infectious isolate of BRBV. Next-generation sequencing of the St. Louis isolate of BRBV (BRBV-STL) showed >99% nucleotide identity to the original reference isolate. Using BRBV-STL, we developed a small animal model to study BRBV-STL tropism in vivo and evaluated the prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy of the experimental antiviral drug favipiravir against BRBV-induced disease. Infection of Ifnar1-/- mice lacking the type I interferon receptor, but not congenic wild-type animals, resulted in uniformly fatal disease 6 to 10 days after infection. RNA in situ hybridization and viral yield assays demonstrated a broad tropism of BRBV-STL with highest levels detected in liver and spleen. In vitro replication and polymerase activity of BRBV-STL were inhibited by favipiravir. Moreover, administration of favipiravir as a prophylaxis or as post-exposure therapy three days after infection prevented BRBV-STL-induced mortality in immunocompromised Ifnar1-/- mice. These results suggest that favipiravir may be a candidate treatment for humans who become infected with BRBV

    Health Beliefs, Behavior, Spiritual Growth, and Salvation in a Global Population of Seventh‑day Adventists

    Background The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a growing global denomination with strict substance use abstinence and recommended dietary requirements that together are called the β€œHealth Message.” Abstinence from alcohol and tobacco is a requirement of membership and a plant-based diet is strongly advised. Purpose While a wide variety of research has reported the Adventist health advantage, very little research has been conducted on Adventist members’ attitudes toward and adherence to the Health Message. This research examines members\u27 views, from a global survey, about the health message, personal adherence, and belief that adherence ensures salvation. Methods The survey was conducted in 2017/2018 with a total N of 63,756. The questionnaire was translated into about 60 languages and then back-translated into English for improved accuracy. Results Over 80% of the respondents reported that they agreed the Adventist health message was wholistic, core to Adventist beliefs, supported by science, and increased the probability of a longer life. There were very few differences by global regions. About 80% also agreed that they should abstain from tobacco and alcohol and follow a healthy diet. However, about 45% believed that they could pick and choose which parts to follow with only a little over one-third reporting that they followed the Health Message a great deal. Strict adherence appeared to be in abstinence from alcohol (91%) and tobacco (97%). Only about 19% reported being vegetarian or vegan. Over 47%, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, reported the belief that if they kept the Health Message completely, they would be assured of salvation, though this is at odds with formal doctrine. Conclusions and Implications The data suggest that church leadership has been successful in obtaining global acceptance of the Health Message, convincing members of its scientific basis, and to abstain from tobacco and alcohol use. However, the data also show almost half of members believe that they can pick and choose elements to follow. In addition, these data have major implications for church leadership in disentangling the implications and expectations of the Health Message from the Church’s fundamental belief that salvation is only through faith in Christ

    Phase-field model for grain boundary grooving in multi-component thin films

    Polycrystalline thin films can be unstable with respect to island formation (agglomeration) through grooving where grain boundaries intersect the free surface and/or thin film-substrate interface. We develop a phase-field model to study the evolution of the phases, composition, microstructure and morphology of such thin films. The phase-field model is quite general, describing compounds and solid solution alloys with sufficient freedom to choose solubilities, grain boundary and interface energies, and heats of segregation to all interfaces. We present analytical results which describe the interface profiles, with and without segregation, and confirm them using numerical simulations. We demonstrate that the present model accurately reproduces the theoretical grain boundary groove angles both at and far from equilibrium. As an example, we apply the phase-field model to the special case of a Ni(Pt)Si (Ni/Pt silicide) thin film on an initially flat silicon substrate.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Modelling Simulation Mater.     Scallop swimming kinematics and muscle performance: modelling the effects of "within-animal" variation in temperature sensitivity

    Escape behaviour was investigated in Queen scallops (Aequipecten opercularis) acclimated to 5, 10 or 15 degrees C and tested at their acclimation temperature. Scallops are active molluscs, able to escape from predators by jet-propelled swimming using a striated muscle working in opposition to an elastic hinge ligament. The first cycle of the escape response was recorded using high-speed video ( 250 Hz) and whole-animal velocity and acceleration determined. Muscle shortening velocity, force and power output were calculated using measurements of valve movement and jet area, and a simple biomechanical model. The average shortening speed of the adductor muscle had a Q(10) of 2.04, significantly reducing the duration of the jetting phase of the cycle with increased temperature. Muscle lengthening velocity and the overall duration of the clap cycle were changed little over the range 5 - 15 degrees C, as these parameters were controlled by the relatively temperature-insensitive, hinge ligament. Improvements in the average power output of the adductor muscle over the first clap cycle ( 222 vs. 139 W kg(-1) wet mass at 15 and 5 degrees C respectively) were not translated into proportional increases in overall swimming velocity, which was only 32% higher at 15 degrees C ( 0.37m s(-1)) than 5 degrees C (0.28 m s(-1))

    Is it Round? Spectropolarimetry of the Type II-P Supernova 1999em

    We present the first multi-epoch spectropolarimetry of a type II plateau supernova (SN II-P), with optical observations of SN 1999em on days 7, 40, 49, 159, and 163 after discovery. These data are used to probe the geometry of the electron-scattering atmosphere before, during, and after the plateau phase, which ended roughly 90 days after discovery. Weak continuum polarization with an unchanging polarization angle (theta ~ 160 deg) is detected at all epochs, with p ~ 0.2% on day 7, p ~ 0.3% on days 40 and 49, and p ~ 0.5% in the final observations. Distinct polarization modulations across strong line features are present on days 40, 49, 159, and 163. Uncorrected for interstellar polarization (which is believed to be quite small), polarization peaks are associated with strong P Cygni absorption troughs and nearly complete depolarization is seen across the H-alpha emission profile. The temporal evolution of the continuum polarization and sharp changes across lines indicate polarization intrinsic to SN 1999em. When modeled in terms of the oblate, electron-scattering atmospheres of Hoeflich, the observed polarization implies anasphericity of at least 7% during the period studied. The temporal polarization increase may indicate greater asphericity deeper into the ejecta. We discuss the implications of asphericity on the use of type II-P supernovae as primary extragalactic distance indicators through the expanding photosphere method (EPM). If asphericity produces directionally dependant flux and peculiar galaxy motions are characterized by sigma_v_rec = 300 km/s, it is shown that the agreement between previous EPM measurements of SNe II and distances to the host galaxies predicted by a linear Hubble law restrict mean SN II asphericity to values less than 30% (3-sigma) during the photospheric phase.Comment: 65 pages (29 Figures, 4 Tables), Accepted for publication in the June 1, 2001 edition of ApJ.
