    Reasons for Ethical Misconduct of Counseling Students: What do Faculty Think?

    The ethics training of students in the helping professions has been a frequent topic in the literature, yet students still commit ethics violations (Li, Lampe, Trusty, & Lin, 2009). No known research has examined the attributions faculty give for student ethics violations. This qualitative study used a conceptual framework of attribution theory and explored faculty attributions of counseling master’s students’ ethical misconduct. Emergent themes were grouped across two broad domains, attribution themes and prevention themes. Attribution themes include: (a) the person, (b) educational factors, and (d) performance. Prevention themes include (a) education and training, (b) gatekeeping and screening, (c) monitoring, (d) personal growth, and (e) support. Singular data for the ethics training of students in the helping professions is discussed

    Returning Counselor Education Doctoral Students: Issues of Retention, Attrition, and Perceived Experiences

    A phenomenological research design was utilized to illuminate the experiences of counselor education doctoral students who had voluntarily departed from study and successfully returned. No studies exist in the counselor education literature examining this phenomenon. Themes derived from the data suggest a common experience across participants, including the salient nature of leaving and returning to study, the importance of faculty-student interactions, and that departure is informed by personal factors and academic culture. The findings have implications for student retention and attrition, as well as counseling departments, counseling faculty, and counselor education doctoral students

    An Examination of Confirmatory Factor Analytic Models of the Spiritual Well-Being Scale

    The Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) is a commonly used overall measure of perceived spiritual quality of life. The SWBS has been demonstrated as a valid and reliable measure, however questions and concerns exist regarding its construct validity. Further, a paucity of empirical literature exists examining the construct of spiritual well-being within the counseling profession. Using data from a study with 415 master’s level counseling students, the authors examined goodness-of-fit for the SWBS of one, two, three, and five-factor models identified in the literature. Results indicated no model yielded good fit. Implications and future research are discussed

    Given the challenge to “reverse-engineer the brain”, our group tried to address the problems of a lack of long term focus and attention span. Tyrosine was determined to aid in mental focus and brain productivity as it is a precursor to the neurotransmitter Dopamine. Given that Tyrosine is naturally occurring in the body, it is preferable to add to the body, whereas a substance like Adderall has negative effects, including increased heart rate that, over time, can cause cardiovascular damage. Drawing connections between in increase ATP and an increased ability to focus and perform under stress, extracellular ATP secretion of PC12 cells is measured using a luminometer. This research is novel and important as it attempts to find a way to increase the human brain’s ability to focus. Ulcerative mycosis is the commonest disease affecting the finfish populations of the Albemarle-Pamlico Estuary. While infectious agents have been isolated from UM lesions, the underlying environmental cause of the disease remains a mystery. We presently know very little of how water quality (including pollution) influences UM prevalence. The difficulty in reproducing the disease by simply challenging fish with the fungal pathogen suggests that environmental stress may play a very important role in disease development. Previous sampling surveys for UM that simultaneously examined water quality did not always show any consistent relationship to disease prevalence, perhaps because water quality monitored simultaneously with disease sampling may not be representative of the actual conditions that caused the disease outbreak. To obtain more reliable data on the risk factors influencing the development of UM, we placed clinically normal Atlantic menhaden in tanks at various sites along the Albemarle-Pamlico Estuary and examined them periodically for the development of UM lesions. We also simultaneously measured ambient water quality, including dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, chlorophyll a, and prevalence of a new toxic dinoflagellate that we have recently discovered in the Albemarle Pamlico Estuary.Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources, East Carolina Universit

    Stable isotopes used to infer trophic position of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) from Dry Tortugas National Park, Gulf of Mexico, United States

    Evaluating resource use patterns for imperiled species is critical for understanding what supports their populations. Here we established stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N) values for the endangered green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) population found within the boundaries of Dry Tortugas National Park (DRTO), south Florida, USA. There is little gene flow between turtles sampled at DRTO and in other rookeries in Florida, underscoring the need to study this distinct population. Between 2008 and 2015 we collected multiple sample types (skin [homogenized epidermis/dermis], whole blood, red blood cells, plasma, carapace) from 151 unique green turtles, including 43 nesting females and 108 in-water captures; some individuals were resampled multiple times across years to evaluate consistency of isotope signatures. Isotopic ratios ranged from -27.3 to -5.4 for δ13C and 3.7 to 10.6 for δ15N. Using linear mixed models, we evaluated covariates (sample type, turtle size and year) that best explained the isotope patterns observed in turtle tissues. Predictions from the top model for δ13C indicated a slight decrease over time and for δ15N a slight increase in the middle sampling years (2010–2012); results indicated that turtle size appeared to be the driver behind the range in δ13C and δ15N observed in turtle skin. We found a pattern in stable carbon isotope values that are indicative of an ontogenetic change from an omnivorous diet in smaller turtles to a seagrass-based diet in larger turtles. When we compared the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values of the samples collected from turtles with that of seagrasses found in DRTO, we found that turtles \u3e 65 cm SCL had similar stable carbon isotope values to the seagrass species present. Results of this study suggest stable isotope analysis coupled with data for available resources can be useful for tracking and detecting future changes in green turtle resource shifts in DRTO

    PCR and FISH Detection Extends the Range of Pfiesteria piscicida in Estuarine Waters

    PCR and fluorescent in situ hybridization probes were used to assay for the presence of the dinoflagellate Pfiesteria piscicida in 170 estuarine water samples collected from New York to northern Florida. 20% of samples tested positive for the presence of P. piscicida, including sites where fish kills due to Pfiesteria have occurred and sites where there was no historical evidence of such events. The results extend the known range of P. piscicida northward to Long Island, New York. The results also suggest that P. piscicida is common, and normally benign, inhabitatant of estuarine waters of the eastern US

    The THO Complex Regulates Pluripotency Gene mRNA Export and Controls Embryonic Stem Cell Self-Renewal and Somatic Cell Reprogramming

    Embryonic stem cell (ESC) self-renewal and differentiation are governed by a broad-ranging regulatory network. Although the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms involved have been investigated extensively, post-transcriptional regulation is still poorly understood. Here we describe a critical role of the THO complex in ESC self-renewal and differentiation. We show that THO preferentially interacts with pluripotency gene transcripts through Thoc5, and is required for self-renewal at least in part by regulating their export and expression. During differentiation, THO loses its interaction with those transcripts due to reduced Thoc5 expression, leading to decreased expression of pluripotency proteins that facilitates exit from self-renewal. THO is also important for the establishment of pluripotency, as its depletion inhibits somatic cell reprogramming and blastocyst development. Together, our data indicate that THO regulates pluripotency gene mRNA export to control ESC self-renewal and differentiation, and therefore uncover a role for this aspect of post-transcriptional regulation in stem cell fate specification
