Reputation and Competence in Publicly Funded Science: Estimating the Effects on Research Group Productivity..
This paper estimates the "production function" for scientific research publications in the field of biotechnology. It utilizes an exceptionally rich and comprehensive data set pertaining to the universe of research groups that applied to a 1989-1993 research program in biotechnology and bio-instrumentation, sponsored by the Italian National research Council, CNR. A structural model of the resource allocation process in scientific research guides the selection of instruments in the econometric analysis, and controls for selectivity bias effects on estimates based on the performance of funded research units. The average elasticity of research output with respect to the research budget is estimated to be 0.6; but, for a small fraction of groups led by highly prestigious PIs this elasticity approaches 1. These estimates imply, conditional on the distribution of observed productivity, that a more unequal distribution of research funds would increase research output in the short-run. Past research publication performance is found to have an important effect on expect levels of grant funding, and hence on the unit's current productivity in terms of (quality adjusted) publications. The results show that the productivity of aggregate resource expenditures supporting scientific research is critically dependent on the institutional mechanisms and criteria employed in the allocation of such resources.
Emotions, Demographics and Sociability in Twitter Interactions
The social connections people form online affect the quality of information
they receive and their online experience. Although a host of socioeconomic and
cognitive factors were implicated in the formation of offline social ties, few
of them have been empirically validated, particularly in an online setting. In
this study, we analyze a large corpus of geo-referenced messages, or tweets,
posted by social media users from a major US metropolitan area. We linked these
tweets to US Census data through their locations. This allowed us to measure
emotions expressed in the tweets posted from an area, the structure of social
connections, and also use that area's socioeconomic characteristics in
analysis. %We extracted the structure of online social interactions from the
people mentioned in tweets from that area. We find that at an aggregate level,
places where social media users engage more deeply with less diverse social
contacts are those where they express more negative emotions, like sadness and
anger. Demographics also has an impact: these places have residents with lower
household income and education levels. Conversely, places where people engage
less frequently but with diverse contacts have happier, more positive messages
posted from them and also have better educated, younger, more affluent
residents. Results suggest that cognitive factors and offline characteristics
affect the quality of online interactions. Our work highlights the value of
linking social media data to traditional data sources, such as US Census, to

A Practical Algorithm for Topic Modeling with Provable Guarantees
Topic models provide a useful method for dimensionality reduction and
exploratory data analysis in large text corpora. Most approaches to topic model
inference have been based on a maximum likelihood objective. Efficient
algorithms exist that approximate this objective, but they have no provable
guarantees. Recently, algorithms have been introduced that provide provable
bounds, but these algorithms are not practical because they are inefficient and
not robust to violations of model assumptions. In this paper we present an
algorithm for topic model inference that is both provable and practical. The
algorithm produces results comparable to the best MCMC implementations while
running orders of magnitude faster.Comment: 26 page
Designing Volumetric Truss Structures
We present the first algorithm for designing volumetric Michell Trusses. Our
method uses a parametrization approach to generate trusses made of structural
elements aligned with the primary direction of an object's stress field. Such
trusses exhibit high strength-to-weight ratios. We demonstrate the structural
robustness of our designs via a posteriori physical simulation. We believe our
algorithm serves as an important complement to existing structural optimization
tools and as a novel standalone design tool itself
Prediction of microRNAs affecting mRNA expression during retinal development
Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNA molecules (similar to 22 nucleotides) which have been shown to play an important role both in development and in maintenance of adult tissue. Conditional inactivation of miRNAs in the eye causes loss of visual function and progressive retinal degeneration. In addition to inhibiting translation, miRNAs can mediate degradation of targeted mRNAs. We have previously shown that candidate miRNAs affecting transcript levels in a tissue can be deduced from mRNA microarray expression profiles. The purpose of this study was to predict miRNAs which affect mRNA levels in developing and adult retinal tissue and to confirm their expression.Results: Microarray expression data from ciliary epithelial retinal stem cells (CE-RSCs), developing and adult mouse retina were generated or downloaded from public repositories. Analysis of gene expression profiles detected the effects of multiple miRNAs in CE-RSCs and retina. The expression of 20 selected miRNAs was confirmed by RT-PCR and the cellular distribution of representative candidates analyzed by in situ hybridization. The expression levels of miRNAs correlated with the significance of their predicted effects upon mRNA expression. Highly expressed miRNAs included miR-124, miR-125a, miR-125b, miR-204 and miR-9. Over-expression of three miRNAs with significant predicted effects upon global mRNA levels resulted in a decrease in mRNA expression of five out of six individual predicted target genes assayed.Conclusions: This study has detected the effect of miRNAs upon mRNA expression in immature and adult retinal tissue and cells. The validity of these observations is supported by the experimental confirmation of candidate miRNA expression and the regulation of predicted target genes following miRNA over-expression. Identified miRNAs are likely to be important in retinal development and function. Misregulation of these miRNAs might contribute to retinal degeneration and disease. Conversely, manipulation of their expression could potentially be used as a therapeutic tool in the future
Computational Complexity in Electronic Structure
In quantum chemistry, the price paid by all known efficient model chemistries
is either the truncation of the Hilbert space or uncontrolled approximations.
Theoretical computer science suggests that these restrictions are not mere
shortcomings of the algorithm designers and programmers but could stem from the
inherent difficulty of simulating quantum systems. Extensions of computer
science and information processing exploiting quantum mechanics has led to new
ways of understanding the ultimate limitations of computational power.
Interestingly, this perspective helps us understand widely used model
chemistries in a new light. In this article, the fundamentals of computational
complexity will be reviewed and motivated from the vantage point of chemistry.
Then recent results from the computational complexity literature regarding
common model chemistries including Hartree-Fock and density functional theory

Expression of Na+/glucose co-transporter 1 (SGLT1) in the intestine of piglets weaned to different concentrations of dietary carbohydrate
Na+/glucose co-transporter 1 (SGLT1) transports dietary sugars from the lumen of the intestine into enterocytes. Regulation of this protein is essential for the provision of glucose to the body and, thus, is important for maintenance of glucose homeostasis. We have assessed expression of SGLT1 at mRNA, protein and functional levels in the intestinal tissue of 28d old piglets weaned onto isoenergetic diets with differing concentrations of digestible carbohydrate (CHO). We show that expression of SGLT1 remains constant when piglets are fed up to 40% CHO-containing diets. However, there is a significant increase in SGLT1 expression when the CHO content of the diet is>50%. Morphometric analyses indicate that the increased expression is not due to a trophic effect. It has been proposed that in rat intestine, in response to a high-CHO diet, GLUT2 (the classical basolateral membrane monosaccharide transporter) is translocated to the luminal membrane of enterocytes to absorb excess dietary glucose. We show, using immunohistochemistry and Western blotting with antibodies raised to amino acids in different epitopes of GLUT2, that under all dietary conditions, low to high CHO, GLUT2 is expressed on the basolateral membrane of pig enterocytes. Furthermore, functional studies indicate that there is no uptake of 2-deoxy-d-glucopyranoside, a specific substrate of Na+-independent glucose transporters into brush-border membrane vesicles isolated from the intestines of piglets either maintained on low- or high-CHO diets. Force distribution in a scalar model for non-cohesive granular material
We study a scalar lattice model for inter-grain forces in static,
non-cohesive, granular materials, obtaining two primary results. (i) The
applied stress as a function of overall strain shows a power law dependence
with a nontrivial exponent, which moreover varies with system geometry. (ii)
Probability distributions for forces on individual grains appear Gaussian at
all stages of compression, showing no evidence of exponential tails. With
regard to both results, we identify correlations responsible for deviations
