Comparaison des pratiques bouchÚres et culinaires de différents groupes sibériens vivant de la renniculture
International audienceIn this paper, we present butchering and culinary practices of several different Siberian reindeer herding groups. The comparisons among these groups reveal similarities as well as few differences in the treatment of reindeer carcasses, the only subject presented in this study. The reference frame of cutmarks presented relative of Binford's one (1981) reveals the morphological variability of some cutmarks type, underlining the need for a survey of butchery patterns in other ethnic groups. Comparison with Paleolithic archaeological faunal assemblages show some dissimilarities that we try to explain.Les pratiques bouchÚres et culinaires de différents groupes sibériens vivant de la renniculture sont présentées. Les comparaisons réalisées mettent en évidence des similitudes mais également quelques différences dans la maniÚre de traiter les carcasses de rennes qui sont notre seul sujet d'étude. Binford (1981) révÚle la variabilité morphologique de certains types de traces, soulignant la nécessité de multiplier ce type d'approche. Point Source Extraction with MOPEX
MOPEX (MOsaicking and Point source EXtraction) is a package developed at the
Spitzer Science Center for astronomical image processing. We report on the
point source extraction capabilities of MOPEX. Point source extraction is
implemented as a two step process: point source detection and profile fitting.
Non-linear matched filtering of input images can be performed optionally to
increase the signal-to-noise ratio and improve detection of faint point
sources. Point Response Function (PRF) fitting of point sources produces the
final point source list which includes the fluxes and improved positions of the
point sources, along with other parameters characterizing the fit. Passive and
active deblending allows for successful fitting of confused point sources.
Aperture photometry can also be computed for every extracted point source for
an unlimited number of aperture sizes. PRF is estimated directly from the input
images. Implementation of efficient methods of background and noise estimation,
and modified Simplex algorithm contribute to the computational efficiency of
MOPEX. The package is implemented as a loosely connected set of perl scripts,
where each script runs a number of modules written in C/C++. Input parameter
setting is done through namelists, ASCII configuration files. We present
applications of point source extraction to the mosaic images taken at 24 and 70
micron with the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) as part of the Spitzer
extragalactic First Look Survey and to a Digital Sky Survey image. Completeness
and reliability of point source extraction is computed using simulated data.Comment: 20 pages, 13 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in PAS

The Concentration-Response Relation Between PM and Daily Deaths.
Particulate air pollution at commonly occurring concentrations is associated with daily deaths. Recent attention has focused on the shape of the concentration-response curve, particularly at low doses. Several recent articles have reported that particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter m PM) was associated with daily deaths with no evidence of a threshold. These reports have used smoothing or spline methods in individual cities and pooled the results across multiple cities to obtain estimates that are more robust. To date, fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter m; PM), a component of PM, has not been examined in this regard. We examined this association in a hierarchical model in six U.S. cities. In the first stage, we fit log-linear models including smooth functions of PM in each city, controlling for season, weather, and day of the week. These smooth functions allowed for nonlinearities in the city-specific associations. We combined the estimated curves across cities using a hierarchical model that allows for heterogeneity. We found an essentially linear relationship down to 2 g/m. The same approach was applied to examine the concentration response to traffic particles, controlling for particles from other sources. Once again, the association showed no sign of a threshold. The magnitude of the association suggests that controlling fine particle pollution would result in thousands of fewer early deaths per year
Uveitis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis: A cohort study
OBJECTIVE: Assess the incidence of intraocular inflammation (uveitis) and ocular complications in children with various types of JIA in a single cohort of patients.
PATIENTS: Included are 172 children (35 boys and 137 girls) diagnosed with JIA. All underwent thorough initial ophthalmologic examination and were followed for a minimum of 3 years.
RESULTS: Of 172 children with JIA, 152 (88.4%) presented with arthritis. Uveitis was detected in 14 of the152 children (9.2%) during the first ophthalmic examination. In 17 additional patients of this group (11.2%), uveitis developed during the follow up period of up to 15 years. Twenty children out of the total of 172 (11.6%) presented initially with uveitis. In children developing uveitis before or along with arthritic manifestations, the ocular disease was chronic with a high rate of secondary complications (band keratopathy, glaucoma, posterior synechiae and cataract). In all affected eyes the initial ocular inflammation was typically confined to the anterior segment. On longer follow up however, most children developed binocular disease and posterior segment involvement. Dense cataract and amblyopia were the major cause of severe visual disabilities.
CONCLUSION: Pauciarticular JIA is associated with intraocular inflammation (uveitis) early during the arthritic disease course. The ocular disease course is unpredictable. Therefore education of parents regarding its signs and symptoms is of utmost importance. To preserve functional vision, secondary ocular complications and amblyopia should be avoided
How are you doing? : emotions and personality in Facebook
User generated content on social media sites is a rich source of information about latent variables of their users. Proper mining of this content provides a shortcut to emotion and personality detection of users without filling out questionnaires. This in turn increases the application potential of personalized services that rely on the knowledge of such latent variables. In this paper we contribute to this emerging domain by studying the relation between emotions expressed in approximately 1 million Facebook (FB) status updates and the users' age, gender and personality. Additionally, we investigate the relations between emotion expression and the time when the status updates were posted. In particular, we find that female users are more emotional in their status posts than male users. In addition, we find a relation between age and sharing of emotions. Older FB users share their feelings more often than young users. In terms of seasons, people post about emotions less frequently in summer. On the other hand, December is a time when people are more likely to share their positive feelings with their friends. We also examine the relation between users' personality and their posts. We find that users who have an open personality express their emotions more frequently, while neurotic users are more reserved to share their feelings
Organizational ingenuity and the paradox of embedded agency: The case of the embryonic Ontario solar energy industry
We examine organizational ingenuity within the paradox of embedded agency where organizational stakeholders are constrained in their behaviors by institutions, yet also influence and change these institutions. In this study organizational ingenuity represents the agency component and institutional constraints the embedded component. We build theory about ingenuity from a four-year case study of the embryonic Ontario solar industry. There were two major institutional constraints, limited grid access and political uncertainty. These led to four ingenuity strategies that emerged at different times and levels of analysis that challenged, complied with, or escaped the constraints. We combine these findings to develop a process model of the emergence of ingenuity in this embryonic industry. Lastly, we find that extending legitimacy to an ingenuity strategy is necessary for its success
Brexit Report - Impact on Business Models of Scottish Companies
The Brexit Business Model Report is a preliminary assessment of research, interviews and survey results regarding the impact of Brexit on the business models of Scottish companies as they prepare for post-Brexit scenarios. The survey was used to compile data to support research questions gathered during the research and interview process for this graduate class project. Questions were designed to assess how Brexit is impacting the ability of Scottish companies in the areas of business model, contingency planning, supply chain, staffing, innovation, global reach, risk assessment, and opportunities. The questions reflected areas of the business model that may have present and future implications. The answers help measure the Brexit impact on Scottish firmsâ business models and the potential for international growth.
The upper management of Scottish companies from the âInsider Top 500â list, âFactSet list, and various trade organizations were selected to receive the survey. The focus of this study was on the potential impact of Brexit on Scottish companiesâ business models. The survey findings show the importance of understanding the elements of a business model in the Brexit context (see Additional File, Executive Summary below for Business Model Brexit Implications on Scottish Companies based on Key Findings table)

Chronic Exposure to Fine Particles and Mortality: An Extended Follow-up of the Harvard Six Cities Study from 1974 to 2009
Background: Epidemiologic studies have reported associations between fine particles (aerodynamic diameter †2.5 ”m; PM:2.5) and mortality. However, concerns have been raised regarding the sensitivity of the results to model specifications, lower exposures, and averaging time. Objective: We addressed these issues using 11 additional years of follow-up of the Harvard Six Cities study, incorporating recent lower exposures. Methods: We replicated the previously applied Cox regression, and examined different time lags, the shape of the concentrationâresponse relationship using penalized splines, and changes in the slope of the relation over time. We then conducted Poisson survival analysis with time-varying effects for smoking, sex, and education. Results: Since 2001, average PM:2.5 levels, for all six cities, were < 18 ”g/m3. Each increase in PM2.5 (10 ”g/m3) was associated with an adjusted increased risk of all-cause mortality (PM2.5 average on previous year) of 14% [95% confidence interval (CI): 7, 22], and with 26% (95% CI: 14, 40) and 37% (95% CI: 7, 75) increases in cardiovascular and lung-cancer mortality (PM2.5 average of three previous years), respectively. The concentrationâresponse relationship was linear down to PM2.5 concentrations of 8 ”g/m3. Mortality rate ratios for PM2.5 fluctuated over time, but without clear trends despite a substantial drop in the sulfate fraction. Poisson models produced similar results. Conclusions: These results suggest that further public policy efforts that reduce fine particulate matter air pollution are likely to have continuing public health benefits
