    Recommendations for Administrators’ Involvement in School-Based Health Promotion: A Scoping Review

    School administrator involvement is recognized as a key factor in the extent to which school health promotion programs and initiatives are successfully implemented. The aims of this scoping review are to: (a) Identify existing documents that contain recommendations regarding the involvement of school administrators in school-based health promotion; (b) distill and summarize the recommendations; (c) examine differences in the recommendations by targeted professional level, professional group, health promotion content focus, and by whether the recommendations are evidence-based or opinion-based; and (d) evaluate the research informing the recommendations. We drew upon the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines to conduct the review. Our team conducted a comprehensive literature search with no date or geographic restrictions from January 2018 through April 2018 using four electronic databases: Academic Search Complete, Google Scholar, Physical Education Index, and PubMed. Eligibility criteria included any online documents, in English, that contained recommendations targeting school administrators’ (e.g., principals, assistant principals, superintendents) involvement (e.g., support, endorsement, advocacy) in school health programming (e.g., physical activity, nutrition, wellness). The search yielded a total of 1225 records, which we screened by title, then by abstract, and finally by full text, resulting in 61 records that met inclusion criteria. Data (e.g., recommendations, targeted contexts, targeted administrators) from these records were extracted for a content analysis. Included records contained 80 distinct recommendations, which we summarized into three themes (Collaboration, Advocacy, and Support) using a content analysis. Separate content analyses revealed no qualitative differences in the recommendations by professional level, professional group, or content focus, or by whether the recommendations were evidence-based or opinion-based. Twenty-one of the included records were peer-reviewed research articles. Using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), we appraised qualitative research articles the highest and mixed methods research articles the lowest. This review provides a basis for future research and professional practice aiming to increase school administrators’ involvement in school-based health promotion

    Implementation Evaluation of a Professional Development Program for Comprehensive School Physical Activity Leaders

    The purpose of this study was to conduct an implementation monitoring evaluation of a yearlong comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP) professional development program across eight multi-state physical education (PE) teacher cohorts. Mixed-method data were collected during a three-year implementation period via workshop attendance sheets and evaluations, post-workshop implementation plans and artifacts, and follow-up phone interviews to enumerate and evaluate the program’s process of recruitment, reach, dose delivered, dose received, fidelity, and context. Recruitment strategies reached a total of 234 PE teacher attendees across eight workshops, with 77 PE teachers (primarily female, elementary, public school teachers) completing all program requirements. Facilitators among full program completers were participation incentives and network opportunities, while common inhibitors were difficulty with online technology and perceptions of added workload. Completers submitted implementation plans with at least three action steps, ranging from 4 to 7 months to accomplish, that predominately commenced with securing administration approval as the first step (81%), focused on implementing student physical activity initiatives beyond PE (76%), and evidenced with mostly picture artifacts (78%). Implementation was facilitated by the presence of multilevel support at school and an elevated image of PE and PE teachers at school, and was inhibited by scheduling constraints, unrealistic planning, and conflicting perceptions of physical activity and PE. Overall, this evaluation reveals unique perspectives of PE teachers regarding schoolwide PA promotion and informs future efforts to target and effectively support CSPAP leaders

    Can Modus Vivendi Save Liberalism from Moralism? A Critical Assessment of John Gray’s Political Realism

    This chapter assesses John Gray’s modus vivendi-based justification for liberalism. I argue that his approach is preferable to the more orthodox deontological or teleological justificatory strategies, at least because of the way it can deal with the problem of diversity. But then I show how that is not good news for liberalism, for grounding liberal political authority in a modus vivendi undermines liberalism’s aspiration to occupy a privileged normative position vis-à-vis other kinds of regimes. So modus vivendi can save liberalism from moralism, but at cost many liberals will not be prepared to pay

    General practitioner advice on physical activity: Analyses in a cohort of older primary health care patients (getABI)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although the benefits of physical activity for health and functioning are recognized to extend throughout life, the physical activity level of most older people is insufficient with respect to current guidelines. The primary health care setting may offer an opportunity to influence and to support older people to become physically active on a regular basis. Currently, there is a lack of data concerning general practitioner (GP) advice on physical activity in Germany. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the rate and characteristics of older patients receiving advice on physical activity from their GP.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a cross-sectional study using data collected at 7 years of follow-up of a prospective cohort study (German epidemiological trial on ankle brachial index, getABI). 6,880 unselected patients aged 65 years and above in the primary health care setting in Germany were followed up since October 2001. During the 7-year follow-up telephone interview, 1,937 patients were asked whether their GP had advised them to get regular physical activity within the preceding 12 months. The interview also included questions on socio-demographic and lifestyle variables, medical conditions, and physical activity. Logistic regression analysis (unadjusted and adjusted for all covariables) was used to examine factors associated with receiving advice. Analyses comprised only complete cases with regard to the analysed variables. Results are expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 1,627 analysed patients (median age 77; range 72-93 years; 52.5% women), 534 (32.8%) stated that they had been advised to get regular physical activity. In the adjusted model, those more likely to receive GP advice on physical activity were men (OR [95% CI] 1.34 [1.06-1.70]), patients suffering from pain (1.43 [1.13-1.81]), coronary heart disease and/or myocardial infarction (1.56 [1.21-2.01]), diabetes mellitus (1.79 [1.39-2.30]) or arthritis (1.37 [1.08-1.73]), and patients taking a high (> 5) number of medications (1.41 [1.11-1.80]).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The study revealed a relatively low rate of older primary health care patients receiving GP advice on physical activity. GPs appeared to focus their advice on patients with chronic medical conditions. However, there are likely to be many more patients who would benefit from advice.</p

    Enhanced Olefin Production from Renewable Aliphatic Feedstocks and Co-Fed Lignin Derivatives Using Experimental Surrogates by Millisecond Catalytic Partial Oxidation

    To investigate the effect of co-fed lignin derivatives on olefin production in the catalytic partial oxidation of aliphatic feedstocks, benzene was selected as a lignin surrogate and n-hexane was selected as a renewable oil surrogate. Aromatic benzene and aliphatic n-hexane, along with the corresponding 80:20 and 50:50 molar n-hexane/benzene mixtures, were partially oxidized in millisecond contact time reactors, varying the fuel to oxygen ratio (0.8 < C/O < 2.0), the catalyst (5 wt % Pt or Rh), the support (45 or 80 pores per linear inch α-Al2O3) while maintaining constant space time (GHSV=105 h−1). The experiments indicate that the addition of benzene likely results in competitive catalytic adsorption which reduces the catalytic oxidation of n-hexane and increases production of olefins by homogeneous cracking. Under optimal conditions, selectivity to ethylene and propylene from n-hexane was increased from 35% using pure n-hexane to 65% when using a 50:50 molar mixture of benzene and n-hexane. Results indicate that the addition of lignin-derived aromatic species should increase production of olefins from catalytically reformed renewable oils

    Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation of Gas-Solid Flow during Steam Reforming of Glycerol in a Fluidized Bed Reactor

    A computational fluid dynamics simulation of gas-solid flow in a fluidized bed reactor was performed to investigate the steam reforming of glycerol using a three-step reaction scheme, motivated by the worldwide increase of crude glycerol produced by the transesterification of vegetable oil into biodiesel. The Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid approach was adopted to simulate hydrodynamics of fluidization, and chemical reactions were modeled by the laminar finite-rate model. The gas-solid system exhibited a more heterogeneous structure. Clusters were observed to fall and stack together along the wall, and the process of wall slug formation was very evident. This suggests the bed should be agitated to maintain satisfactory fluidizing conditions. The results showed that the glycerol conversion increased with increasing reaction time, and most of the gas products-H2, CO2, CH4, and CO-were formed during the initial 2 s. The prediction of the gas-solid phase flows and mixing, glycerol conversion, and products distribution will provide helpful data to design and operate a bench-scale catalytic fluidized bed reactor

    Effect of Temperature and Transport on the Yield and Composition of Pyrolysis-Derived Bio-Oil from Glucose

    The fast pyrolysis of biomass forms bio-oil, char, and light noncondensable gases. Bio-oil is the desired product in context of converting biomass to biofuel. The effect of temperature on bio-oil yield and composition is anticipated to be different under reaction-limited and transport-limited operating conditions. Attaining fundamental understanding of the effect of temperature and transport on bio-oil yield and composition is challenging, because of limited knowledge of pyrolysis chemistry and the inter-relationship between chemistry and transport. In this work, we performed thin-film and powder pyrolysis experiments to investigate the thermal decomposition of glucose (biomass model compound) under both reaction-controlled and transport-limited operating conditions. In thin-film (size ≤10 μm) experiments, the effect of temperature on pyrolysis product distribution, especially on bio-oil yield and composition, was studied. In addition, using the thin-film data, mechanistic insights into glucose decomposition were provided and a map of reaction pathways was proposed. Decomposition of glucose in the reaction-controlled regime is initiated by dehydration reactions. With increase in temperature, anhydrosugars (viz, levoglucosan and levoglucosenone) apparently converted to furans (hydroxymethylfurfural) and light oxygenates (formic acid/methyl glyoxal), respectively, as ring opening and fragmentation reactions became more facile. Pyrans remained relatively stable. The effect of transport was investigated by performing pyrolysis experiments with different particle sizes. The variation in the yield and composition of bio-oil, with respect to temperature and particle size, was also analyzed. In the case of glucose powder, levoglucosan yield increased significantly with particle size but decreased marginally with temperature, while hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, formic acid, and methyl glyoxal yields monotonically increased as the temperature and particle size each increased. A thin film of glucose gave a lower yield of bio-oil and a higher yield of char than that of glucose powder
