    Effects of copper fungicide spraying on volatile thiols of the varietal aroma of Sauvignon blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines

    In a three-year experiment, the effect of pre-veraison copper sprayings of vines on must composition and some volatile thiols contributing to the varietal aroma of Sauvignon blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines was studied in comparison with folpet sprayings in the Bordeaux winegrowing region. The readivity of copper residues with thiols, mainly during the alcoholic fermentation, had a dramatic effect on the concentration of 4-mercapto-4-methylpentan-2-one and 3-mercaptohexanol in wines. However, copper sprayings, preferentially on the foliage, did not significantly increase copper residues in must; thiol concentrations in wines were very close to those found in wines obtained from vines sprayed with folpet. Therefore, this mode of spraying can be used to avoid the effects of copper treatment at veraison on the volatile thiols of the wines varietal aroma.

    L'extraction sélective des thiols volatils présents dans un vin a l'état de traces, associée à l'analyse par couplage chromatographie en phase gazeuse (CPG)-détecteur à photométrie de flamme (DPF) et CPG-spectrométrie de masse (SM) de l'extrait obtenu, a permis d'identifier un nouveau constituant de l'arome des vins de Sauvignon, l'acétate de 3-mercaptohexanol, jusqu'ici seulement caractérise dans le fruit de la passion. Le seuil de perception dans l'eau et en solution modèle de ce composé fortement odorant évoquant le buis avec des nuances plus fruitées de pamplemousse et de fruit de la passion est de l'ordre de quelques ng/1. L'acétate de 3-mercaptohexanol pourrait contribuer significativement à l'arôme variétal des vins de Sauvignon.Identification of 3-mercaptohexyl acetate in Sauvignon wine, a powerful aromatic compound exhibiting box-tree odorSelective extraction of volatile mercaptans present in wines at trace levels, combined with capillary gas chromatographic (GC) analysis using flame photometric detector (FPD) revealed the presence of a previously unreported compound in Sauvignon wine. 3-mercaptohexylacetate was identified by comparison of chromatographic and mass spectrum data with those of the reference compound. This mercapto ester, recently found in passion-fruit, exhibits aroma reminiscent of box tree with grapefruit and passion fruit notes. Its perception threshold in water and model solution is around 2-4 ng/l. 3-mercaptohexylacetate may contribute to the typical varietal aroma of Sauvignon wines

    Efficacy of bifenthrin-impregnated bednets against Anopheles funestus and pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae in North Cameroon

    BACKGROUND: Recent field studies indicated that insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs) maintain their efficacy despite a high frequency of the knock-down resistance (kdr) gene in Anopheles gambiae populations. It was essential to evaluate ITNs efficacy in areas with metabolic-based resistance. METHODS: Bifenthrin was used in this experiment because it is considered a promising candidate for bednets impregnation. Nets were treated at 50 mg/m(2), a dose that has high insecticidal activity on kdr mosquitoes and at 5 mg/m(2), a dose that kills 95% of susceptible mosquitoes under laboratory conditions with 3 minutes exposure. Bednets were holed to mimic physical damage. The trial was conducted in three experimental huts from Pitoa, North-Cameroon where Anopheles gambiae displays metabolic resistance and cohabits with An. funestus. RESULTS: Bifenthrin at 50 mg/m(2 )significantly reduced anophelines' entry rate (>80%). This was not observed at 5 mg/m(2). Both treatments increased exophily in An. gambiae, and to a lesser extent in An. funestus. With bifenthrin at high dosage, over 60% reduction in blood feeding and 75–90% mortality rates were observed in both vectors. Despite presence of holes, only a single An. gambiae and two An. funestus females were collected inside the treated net, and all were found dead. The same trends were observed with low dosage bifenthrin though in most cases, no significant difference was found with the untreated control net. CONCLUSION: Bifenthrin-impregnated bednets at 50 mg/m(2 )were efficient in the reduction of human-vector contact in Pitoa.     Efficacy of mosquito nets treated with insecticide mixtures or mosaics against insecticide resistant Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Côte d'Ivoire

    Only pyrethroid insecticides have so far been recommended for the treatment of mosquito nets for malaria control. Increasing resistance of malaria vectors to pyrethroids threatens to reduce the potency of this important method of vector control. Among the strategies proposed for resistance management is to use a pyrethroid and a non-pyrethroid insecticide in combination on the same mosquito net, either separately or as a mixture. Mixtures are particularly promising if there is potentiation between the two insecticides as this would make it possible to lower the dosage of each, as has been demonstrated under laboratory conditions for a mixture of bifenthrin (pyrethroid) and carbosulfan (carbamate). The effect of these types of treatment were compared in experimental huts on wild populations of Anopheles gambiae Giles and the nuisance mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Say, both of which are multi-resistant. Four treatments were evaluated in experimental huts over six months: the recommended dosage of 50 mg m−2 bifenthrin, 300 mg m−2 carbosulfan, a mosaic of 300 mg m−2 carbosulfan on the ceiling and 50 mg m−2 bifenthrin on the sides, and a mixture of 6.25 mg m−2 carbosulfan and 25 mg m−2 bifenthrin. The mixture and mosaic treatments did not differ significantly in effectiveness from carbosulfan and bifenthrin alone against anophelines in terms of deterrency, induced exophily, blood feeding inhibition and overall mortality, but were more effective than in earlier tests with deltamethrin. These results are considered encouraging, as the combination of different classes of insecticides might be a potential tool for resistance management.     We report the results of ac and dc magnetization (M) and heat-capacity (C) measurements on the solid solution, Sr3_3Cu1−x_{1-x}Znx_xIrO6_6. While the Zn end member is known to form in a rhombohedral pseudo one-dimensional K4_4CdCl6_6 structure with an antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of (TN_N =) 19 K, the Cu end member has been reported to form in a monoclinically distorted form with a Curie temperature of (TC_C =) 19 K. The magnetism of the Zn compound is found to be robust to synthetic conditions and is broadly consistent with the behavior known in the literature. However, we find a lower magnetic ordering temperature (To_o) for our Cu compound (~ 13 K), thereby suggesting that To_o is sensitive to synthetic conditions. The Cu sample appears to be in a spin-glass-like state at low temperatures, judged by a frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibility and a broadening of the C anomaly at the onset of magnetic ordering, in sharp contrast to earlier proposals. Small applications of magnetic field, however, drive this system to ferromagnetism as inferred from the M data. Small substitutions for Cu/Zn (x = 0.75 or 0.25) significantly depress magnetic ordering; in other words, To_o varies non-monotonically with x (To_o ~ 6, 3 and 4 K for x = 0.25, 0.5, and 0.67 respectively). The plot of inverse susceptibility versus temperature is non-linear in the paramagnetic state as if correlations within (or among) the magnetic chains continuously vary with temperature.     The spin dynamics of the S=1 Ni-chains in mixed-spin antiferromagnets Pr_2 Ba Ni O_5 and Nd_x Y_2-x Ba Ni O_5 is described in terms of a simple Ginzburg-Landau Lagrangian coupled to the sublattice of rare-earth ions. Within this framework we obtain a theoretical explanation for the experimentally observed coexistence of Haldane gap excitations and long-range magnetic order, as well as for the increase of the Haldane gap energy below the Neel point. We also predict that the degeneracy of the Haldane triplet is lifted in the magnetically ordered phase.     Long-range magnetic ordering in R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R=magnetic rare earth) quasi-1-dimensional mixed-spin antiferromagnets is described by a simple mean-field model that is based on the intrinsic staggered magnetization function of isolated Haldane spin chains for the Ni-subsystem, and single-ion magnetization functions for the rare earth ions. The model is applied to new experimental results obtained in powder diffraction experiments on Nd_2 Ba Ni O_5 and Nd Y Ba Ni O_5, and to previously published diffraction data for Er_2 Ba Ni O_5.     Anomalous spectral weight in photoemission spectra of the hole doped Haldane chain Y2-xSrxBaNiO5

    In this paper, we present photoemission experiments on the hole doped Haldane chain compound Y2−xSrxBaNiO5Y_{2-x}Sr_xBaNiO_5. By using the photon energy dependence of the photoemission cross section, we identified the symmetry of the first ionisation states (d type). Hole doping in this system leads to a significant increase in the spectral weight at the top of the valence band without any change in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. This behavior, not observed in other charge transfer oxides at low doping level, could result from the inhomogeneous character of the doped system and from a Ni 3d-O 2p hybridization enhancement due to the shortening of the relevant Ni-O distance in the localized hole-doped regions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
