    Creep and fluidity of a real granular packing near jamming

    We study the internal dynamical processes taking place in a granular packing below yield stress. At all packing fractions and down to vanishingly low applied shear, a logarithmic creep is evidenced. The experiments are analyzed under the scope of a visco-elastic model introducing an internal "fluidity" variable. For all experiments, the creep dynamics can be rescaled onto a unique curve which displays jamming at the random-close-packing limit. At each packing fraction, a stress value is evidenced, corresponding to the onset of internal granular reorganisation leading to a slowing down the creep dynamics before the final yield

    Spatial repartition of local plastic processes in different creep regimes in a granular material

    Granular packings under constant shear stress display below the Coulomb limit, a logarithmic creep dynamics. However the addition of small stress modulations induces a linear creep regime characterized by an effective viscous response. Using Diffusing Wave Spectroscopy, we investigate the relation between creep and local plastic events spatial distribution ("hot-spots") contributing to the plastic yield. The study is done in the two regimes, i.e. with and without mechanical activation. The hot-spot dynamics is related to the material effective fluidity. We show that far from the threshold, a local visco-elastic rheology coupled to an ageing of the fluidity parameter, is able to render the essential spatio-temporal features of the observed creep dynamics

    Mechanical fluctuations suppress the threshold of soft-glassy solids : the secular drift scenario

    We propose a dynamical mechanism leading to the fluidization of soft-glassy amorphous mate-rial driven below the yield-stress by external mechanical fluctuations. The model is based on the combination of memory effect and non-linearity, leading to an accumulation of tiny effects over a long-term. We test this scenario on a granular packing driven mechanically below the Coulomb threshold. We bring evidences for an effective viscous response directly related to small stress modulations in agreement with the theoretical prediction of a generic secular drift

    Au début des années 1960, le gouvernement français décide de l’aménagement touristique de l’ensemble du littoral méditerranéen du golfe du Lion, polarisé sur quelques grandes stations créées ex-nihilo. L’entreprise est confiée à une mission interministérielle, la « Mission Racine » du nom de son président. Cette étude se concentre sur les premières années où les maires des communes concernées qui avaient été souvent les acteurs du développement d’un tourisme populaire balnéaire sur leurs côtes, risquaient de devenir simples spectateurs d’un gigantesque dispositif national. Pourtant, malgré leur faible pouvoir et bien que de gauche, ils adhérèrent tous, plus ou moins facilement, au projet initié par le pouvoir gaulliste, l’influençant parfois sur le terrain et profitant surtout des moyens importants dont disposait la Mission pour améliorer les infrastructures de leur bourg.In the early 1960s, the French government decided to develop tourism along the whole Mediterranean coast of the Gulf of Lion, concentrating their efforts on a few large seaside resorts that were built ex-nihilo. The project was handed over by the government to a cross-department unit called “Mission Racine” after the name of its president. This study focuses on the early years of the project, when local mayors who had often been actively involved in the development of mass seaside tourism on their coasts were about to become mere spectators of a gigantic national programme. Despite their weak power and left-wing political leanings, they all supported more or less enthusiastically the project initiated by de Gaulle’s government, sometimes influencing it on the ground. They also took advantage of the considerable resources deployed by Mission Racine to improve their villages’ infrastructures

    Intruder mobility in a vibrated granular packing

    We study experimentally the dynamics of a dense intruder sinking under gravity inside a vibrated 2D granular packing. The surrounding flow patterns are characterized and the falling trajectories are interpreted in terms of an effectivive friction coefficient related to the intruder mean descent velocity (flow rules). At higher confining pressures i.e. close to jamming, a transition to intermittent dynamics is evidenced and displays anomalous "on-off" blockade statistics. A systematic analysis of the flow rules, obtained for different intruder sizes, either in the flowing regime or averaged over the flowing and blockade regimes, strongly suggest the existence of non-local properties for the vibrated packing rheology.

    Prevalence and Significance of Non-conventional Antiphospholipid Antibodies in Patients With Clinical APS Criteria

    Background: The biological diagnostics of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) takes into account the persistent positivity for anticardiolipin and/or anti-β2GP1 antibodies and/or presence of lupus anticoagulant (LA). However, some non-conventional antiphospholipid antibodies have emerged that could help in the diagnosis of APS.Objectives: To study the potential usefulness of non-conventional antiphospholipid antibodies in clinical practice.Methods: Eighty-seven patients, aged from 15 to 92 years were included and classified in following groups: 41 patients positive for the conventional antibodies with clinical criterion of APS (31 with primary APS and 10 secondary), 17 seronegative APS (SNAPS) patients (i.e., persistent negativity for the conventional antibodies with a strong clinical suspicion of APS), 11 asymptomatic antiphospholipid antibodies carriers (i.e., persistent positivity for the conventional antibodies without clinical evidence of APS), and 18 patients presenting with a first thrombotic or obstetrical event. IgG and IgM were detected to the following antigens: phosphatidylserine/prothrombin (PS/PT) by ELISA, and phosphatidic acid, phosphatidyl-ethanolamine, phosphatidyl-glycerol, phosphatidyl-inositol, phosphatidylserine, annexin V, prothrombin by immunodot. Anti-β2GP1 IgA, and anti-β2GP1 domain 1 IgG were detected by chemiluminescence.Results: Positivity for the non-conventional antibodies was correlated with APS severity; patients with catastrophic APS (CAPS) being positive for 10.7 (Median, Range: 5–14) non-conventional antibodies. 9/17 seronegative patients were positive for at least one of non-conventional antibodies. A study of non-supervised hierarchical clustering of all markers revealed that anti-PS/PT antibodies showed high correlation with the presence of LA. All patients with APS triple positivity (highest risk profile) exhibited also persistent positivity for anti-PS/PT antibodies.Conclusions: Our data obtained from a prospective cohort constituted mainly by patients with primary APS, suggest that non-conventional APS antibodies may be useful for patients classified as SNAPS. They demonstrate the potential value of aPS/PT antibodies as a strong marker of APS. We propose that anti-PS/PT antibodies could be a surrogate APS biological marker of LA to classify in high-risk profile patients treated by direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), in whom LA detection cannot be achieved

    Enhanced diffusion due to active swimmers at a solid surface

    We consider two systems of active swimmers moving close to a solid surface, one being a living population of wild-type \textit{E. coli} and the other being an assembly of self-propelled Au-Pt rods. In both situations, we have identified two different types of motion at the surface and evaluated the fraction of the population that displayed ballistic trajectories (active swimmers) with respect to those showing random-like behavior. We studied the effect of this complex swimming activity on the diffusivity of passive tracers also present at the surface. We found that the tracer diffusivity is enhanced with respect to standard Brownian motion and increases linearly with the activity of the fluid, defined as the product of the fraction of active swimmers and their mean velocity.     Unraveling bacterial strategies for spatial exploration is crucial for understanding the complexity in the organization of life. Bacterial motility determines the spatio-temporal structure of microbial communities, controls infection spreading and the microbiota organization in guts or in soils. Most theoretical approaches for modeling bacterial transport rely on their run-and-tumble motion. For Escherichia coli, the run time distribution was reported to follow a Poisson process with a single characteristic time related to the rotational switching of the flagellar motors. However, direct measurements on flagellar motors show heavy-tailed distributions of rotation times stemming from the intrinsic noise in the chemotactic mechanism. Currently, there is no direct experimental evidence that the stochasticity in the chemotactic machinery affect the macroscopic motility of bacteria. In stark contrast with the accepted vision of run-and-tumble, here we report a large behavioral variability of wild-type \emph{E. coli}, revealed in their three-dimensional trajectories. At short observation times, a large distribution of run times is measured on a population and attributed to the slow fluctuations of a signaling protein triggering the flagellar motor reversal. Over long times, individual bacteria undergo significant changes in motility. We demonstrate that such a large distribution of run times introduces measurement biases in most practical situations. Our results reconcile the notorious conundrum between run time observations and motor switching statistics. We finally propose that statistical modeling of transport properties currently undertaken in the emerging framework of active matter studies, should be reconsidered under the scope of this large variability of motility features.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, Supplementary information include
