    Cosmological Einstein-Yang-Mills equations

    Get PDF
We use a systematic construction method for invariant connections on homogeneous spaces to find the Einstein-SU(n)-Yang-Mills equations for Friedmann-Robertson-Walker and locally rotationally symmetric homogeneous cosmologies. These connections depend on the choice of a homomorphism from the isotropy group into the gauge group. We consider here the cases of the gauge group SU(n) and SO(n) where these homomorphisms correspond to unitary or orthogonal representations of the isotropy group. For some of the simpler cases the full system of the evolution equations are derived, for others we only determine the number of dynamical variables that remain after some mild fixing of the gauge.Comment: 28 pages, uses amsmath, amsthm, amssymb, epsfig, verbatim, minor correction

What goes without saying: Husserl's concept of style

    Get PDF
The idea of "style" emerges at several important points throughout Husserl's oeuvre: in the second part of the Crisis of the European Sciences, the lectures on intersubjectivity published in Husserliana XV, and in the analyses of transcendental character and intersubjectivity in the second book of the Ideas. This paper argues that the idea of style, often overlooked, is in fact central to understanding Husserl's conception of the person and intersubjective relations, its role in the latter captured in his odd turn of phrase, "intuitive flair." Moreover, by showing the interdependence between the ideas of style and institution (Stiftung), I argue that institution also has a central role in Husserl's account of constitution and personhood. The relevance of the relation between institution and style goes beyond Husserlian phenomenology. In his late writings, Merleau-Ponty makes this relation the centerpiece of his attempts at an "indirect-ontology." Thus the investigation of Husserl's concept of style that I carry out here becomes an important propaedeutic for the study of style that Merleau-Ponty calls for in his later work. In brief, the concept of style has an important role to play in any phenomenological account of personhood and intersubjective relations. © 2013 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden

    From Anonymous to Known

I found myself associating some studio projects with their designers: their personalities and their passion for certain things are involved and apparent in their work. However, many other works stay anonymous to the viewer and possibly even the owner. How do you make your project known to you

Was Jesus Christ Born a Jew or Not? Luther and Protestant Anti-Judaism in Nazi Germany

    Get PDF
Martin Luther’s role as the founder of German Protestantism placed him in a position where he was the hero for two opposing factions that formed within the German Evangelical Church in the wake of the Nazi party’s rise to power in 1933. The two factions were the pro-Nazi German Christians and the anti-Nazi Confessing Church. The two sides appealed to different aspects of Luther’s theology to defend their beliefs. Martin Luther’s theology, particularly his anti-Judaic beliefs was a crucial issue for the divided Protestant Church. Luther’s writings are crucial for determining how influential he was for both groups

Truth lies in the future. Frank Gehry believes that the future of the context lies in the architecture that is yet to be created. As students, we need to trust the value of our project lies in the time that is yet to come. Education lies in trust. “It embraces the future…by supporting the growth of something that cannot be seen yet, an emergent sensibility that cannot be judged by contemporary standards.” (Columbia University GSAPP Dean’s Statement: The Future of the Architect

Benefits to signal timing optimization and ITS to corridor operations

    Get PDF
Traffic signals are one of the primary constraints on corridor capacity in the highway/arterial network. The amount traffic is impeded is heavily dependent on the quality of the signal timings.;The purpose of this research was to conduct a case study of a congested corridor to demonstrate the benefits of traffic signal retiming/optimization on corridor operations. Tactically, this research involved development and application of a methodology to develop and assess signal timing plan alternatives. The research demonstrated the benefits in terms of delay, travel time, emissions, and fuel consumption. Strategically, this project can be used to provide a concrete example of the benefits of traffic signal timing improvement.;Four alternatives were developed. The fourth, a phasing change with coordination garnered the best results. The phasing change alone was found to be beneficial; however, implementing coordination in the corridor in conjunction with the phasing change yielded even greater benefits

Business Education Innovation: How Common Exams Can Improve University Teaching

Although there is significant research on improving college-level teaching practices, most literature in the field assumes an incentive for improvement.  The research presented in this paper addresses the issue of poor incentives for improving university-level teaching.  Specifically, it proposes instructor-designed common examinations as an incentive for teaching improvement and uses empirical data from business school student tests to illustrate the utility of such assessments.  Results were drawn from almost 250 college students who had different professors for the same course.  Comparing the data from a common assessment revealed important differences about what students learn and created opportunities and incentives to improve teaching practices in a way few other methods can
