The case for metadata harvesting
Metadata harvesting is an increasingly popular model of interaction between the mutually autonomous parties of medium, medium-large federations of digital library services. With a harvesting protocol, in particular, resource descriptions locally available at each party can be served to remote applications for the implementation of federated services, such as resource discovery. This article offers a systematic explanation of the success of the model and its standard implementations in the context of current initiatives for national and international federations
The Effect of an Online Journal Club on Fieldwork Educatorsâ Perspectives on Student Professionalism
This study examined the effect of an online journal club on fieldwork educatorsâ perspectives on student professionalism. Fieldwork educators participated in a five-week journal club on the topic of professionalism. Thirty-nine fieldwork educators completed the experience, which entailed a pre-posttest survey, reading one article, and participating in a weekly, asynchronous discussion. Ratings of confidence in supervising students who exhibit unprofessional behaviors increased at a statistically significant level from pretest to posttest. Qualitative themes are presented for pre-posttest questions, in addition to the weekly discussion responses. An online journal club for fieldwork educators increased self-ratings of confidence in supervising students who exhibit unprofessional behaviors, cultivated discussion on how to best convey their expectations of professionalism to their students, and facilitated enrichment of their concept of professionalism within the field of occupational therapy

A "Crise" do Café e a Ideologia Desenvolvimentista no Espirito Santo
Nutritional narratives: cultural and communications perspectives on plant-based diets
This paper responds to a range of popular materials circulating in the public sphere asserting a plant-based (PB) diet is of benefit to humans and a protection against many chronic diseases. Although directed at a lay audience, books such as The China Study (Campbell & Campbell) are based upon extensive academic research, and highlight multiple health, environmental and social advantages of PB diets over traditional western diets. Arguments advocating PB nutrition, however, generally struggle to achieve traction in the public sphere. Narratives around PB food choices, and difficulties in shifting mainstream eating patterns, reflect the cultural symbolism attached to food, and the significance of food as an economic commodity. Moreover, the âexpertâ status of the medical establishment privileges medical interventions over preventative PB approaches. This paper applies Cultural Studies and Health Communications perspectives to investigate bottlenecks preventing the adoption of a PD diet by a wider cross-section of the population

Sustaining online communities in the charitable health sector: how to keep a good thing going
What happens when an online community part-funded by a competitive grant process in partnership with a relevant charitable organisation reaches its use-by date? What reasons might an organisation have for continuing (or not) to support the community and its future development? How is âownershipâ transferred from the research institution to the not-forprofit organisation, along with any possible risks? These are all good questions: not least because it seems that most communities in this position are not âadoptedâ by their not-forprofit sponsors, but languish on the sidelines waiting for a benefactor to pick up the potential costs and risks. This paper explores the Australian experience of forming online communities to support notfor- profit organisationsâ user populations, and then finding the sponsoring organisation hesitating to adopt the project after the research has successfully demonstrated need and demand. It identifies drivers and inhibitors affecting the decision to support, neglect or abandon online communities
TESTING FOR MULTIPLE UPPER OUTLIERS IN DISTRIBUTION SAMPLES: A STUDY OF FOREIGN EXCHANGE DATA
In this study, the existences of k-upper outliers are investigated in distribution samples of gamma, Normal and exponential by carrying out a simulation of ten thousand at different values of n using algorithm introduced by Tietjen-Moore, test statistics, and critical values were equally estimated from the algorithm. A Normal Q-Q plot was made which aims at distinguishing a data set that follows a normal distribution and one that deviates from normality. The algorithm was applied to Nigeria-US dollars foreign exchange rate, both on raw and logarithmic transformed data. The simulation study reveals the existence of upper outliers more in Gamma and exponential samples than the Normal sample. Empirical analysis shows that there are upper outliers in the raw data set but no upper outliers are found in the transformed data. The result in this paper would help the researcher in business and economics to take time to explore data before use and properly transform accordingly to avoid error in estimation
KEEPING UP WITH GLOBAL TRENDS: ASSESSING PRIVATE TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS' TRAINING AND RETRAINING PROCESSES IN NIGERIA
This study examines the lifelong learning processes of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. One of the most
unique attributes of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is the ability to simplify
processes and aid efficiency. Institutions are not run the way they used to some decades back. This is
attributed to the evolution of ICT. Since new technologies evolve at astonishing speed, it should be
expected that tertiary institutions should not only learn of them, but also adopt them in their
administrative processes. This brings to the fore the role of staff members in ensuring the success of
this process. This study, therefore, examines the processes adopted by selected tertiary institutions to
train and retrain their staff to be able to keep up with ICT trends using multinomial logistic model
approach
