Purpose - This study examined the effect of Ownership Structure (Management Shareholding and Ownership Concentration) on the loan quality (LDR) of banks in Nigeria for a period of 10 years (2008-2017). The study utilized data extracted from the annual reports of the fourteen (14) studied banks.Method - Robustness tests were carried out to determine: the existence or otherwise of multi-collinearity, fitness of the model and appropriate regression analysis for the study. Descriptive statistics, correlation and Fixed Effect GLS regression were used to describe and analyze the data.Result - The study found that, ownership structure (ownership concentration and management shareholding) has significant negative effect on loan quality of banks in Nigeria.Implication - The implications of this research is that increased ownership concentration as well as management shareholding can strengthen banks’ loan quality owing to reduced proportion of depositors funds used to finance loan. This could spur confidence in the bank by the general public with regards to the safety of their deposits.Originality - This study is different from other studies that concentrated on the use of ownership structure in relations to various financial performance measurements such as ROA, ROE, NPM among other. In this study, effort was made to consider the financial health of banks owing to the nature of their business (loan)

Personal Names in the Families of Russian Germans: Challenges of Self-Identification of the Ethnic Group

    Get PDF
The research deals with the topical issue of changing the ‘ethnolinguistic and cultural area’, a shift in the system of ethnolinguistic and cultural orientations and values of the people. The problem is discussed from the perspective of anthroponymic material in the families of ethnic Germans born in Russia, whose ancestors settled on Russian lands since the reign of Catherine II. The primary purpose of the study is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of some (often controversial) aspects of (self)identification of the linguistic personality of Russian Germans from the perspective of the corpus of personal names. Using the methods of functional historical analysis, continuous sampling, interview, systemisation, and interpretation, the authors of this study, based on the analysis of a relatively large corpus of collected personal names, as well as based on answers of 200 respondents, who are descendants of Russian Germans, attempted to determine which names are chosen for children and what language Russian Germans speak today. The problem is considered from a synergistic perspective: sociolinguistics, linguoculturology and ethnolinguistics, as well as anthroponymics. The authors conclude that the choice of names in the families of Russian Germans of German/non-German origin depends on several factors— traditions of the family; place of residence; the level of education; profession/specialisation. In the anthroponymicon of Russian Germans, under the influence of personal names of the surrounding ethnic groups, socio-cultural and historical changes result in internal changes in language units

[Purpose] It is impossible to imagine the life of a modern person without space technologies. International crews of astronauts have been working in orbit as part of the International Space Station for the past fifteen years. The purpose of the study is to assess the problems of legal regulation of activities related to the use of space communications. [Methodology] According to the specifics of the subject and the purpose of the research, we applied dialectical, historical, comparative and system-structural methods. [Findings] The international legal instruments of general statutory load on outer space subjects and specialised regulation with a focus on individual aspects of the safety of space activities were studied. To clarify the scope of relevant objects of outer space, the causes of emerging dangers as a result of space activities were identified. The development of a set of regulations for the commercial use of space communications was demonstrated. [Practical Implications] The practical significance of the study is determined by the fact that the safety of space activities in recent years has become one of the most serious problems of space activities.[Purpose] It is impossible to imagine the life of a modern person without space technologies. Kinetics Of Vapor-Liquid Phase Separation Under Gravity

We study the kinetics of vapor-liquid phase separation of a hydrodynamics preserving three-dimensional one component Lennard Jones system in the presence of external gravitational field using extensive molecular dynamic simulation. A bicontinuous domain structure is formed when the homogeneous system near the critical density is quenched inside the coexistence region. In the absence of gravity, the domain morphology is statistically self-similar and the length scale grows linearly with time. However, the presence of gravity destroys the isotropy of the system and affects the scaling laws. We observe an accelerated domain growth in the direction of the field at late time which resembles sedimentation process. Consequently, a new length scale emerges which strongly depends on the field strength. Similar behavior is observed in the direction perpendicular to the applied field, with a different growth rate. Finally, the validity of Porod's law and Superuniversality in such anisotropic systems is verified in terms of two-point equal time order parameter correlation function and static structure factor

The role of rapid diagnostic point of care IgG/IgM antibody tests in the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection

Background: Current testing of symptomatic patients for SARS-CoV-2 involves the use of nucleic acid amplification tests, also known as genetic, RNA or PCR to detect viral RNA. The initial use of point-of-care (POC) antibody tests, also known as serological tests in the management of SARS-CoV-2 infection was limited. In this review, we determine the significance of POC antibody serological tests and explore their possible role in the diagnosis and management of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus. Methods: A literature search was conducted in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Embase, and supplemented by searching the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) websites. We identified 7 articles published in the last 6 months pertaining to the keywords. The sensitivity and specificity of the IgG/IgM antibody tests obtained from these studies were compared and used to determine the clinical importance of the rapid diagnostic antibody test in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Results: Through the literature review, it was found that POC diagnostic antibody tests can be used as an adjuvant with the nucleic acid amplification tests in determining both active and post-exposure antibodies. These rapid antibody IgG/IgM tests had high sensitivity, the ability of a test to correctly identify those with the disease, and high specificity, the ability of the test to correctly identify those without the disease. Conclusion: Emerging studies indicate the importance of POC antibody serological testing as an important diagnostic tool in the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Considering the limitations of the molecular methods of testing, POC antibody tests can help reduce dependency on the molecular assays of testing when used in conjunction with them

Integration of herbaceous legume Aeschynomene histrixinto the farmers’ cropping system is one viable option that can improve the nutrition of maize (Zea mays), increase soil physical, chemical and biological properties which can result in sustainable Striga control and crop productivity. This study was conducted to determine the effects of A. histrix fallow and N fertilizer application on Strigainfestation, growth and yield of maize. The study involved the factorial combination of fallow type: natural fallow (NF) and A. histrix fallow (AF), and inorganic N fertilizer application: 0, 30, 60 and 90 kg N ha-1 arranged in a split plot in a randomised complete block design and replicated three times. Results show that cropping/maize after A. histrix fallow significantly (P < 0.05) delayed Strigaemergence, reduced its virulence on the host crop, increased maize plant height, and grain yield compared to natural fallow. Application of 90 kg N ha-1 delayed days to Striga shoot emergence, reduced Striga damage on host crop, and increased plant height of maize. Heavier and higher grain yield of maize were significantly associated with of 60 kg N ha-1. Integrating A. histrix fallow rotations with application of 60 kg N ha-1 can provide sustainable Strigacontrol, and A. histrix in combination with 90 kg N ha-1 modest yield of maize. This study has shown that farmers in the southern Guinea savanna location of Nigeria can effectively control Striga and obtain better maize yield by integrating A. histrix fallow with the application of N fertilizer. Keywords:  Striga, Aeschynomene histrix, fallow rotation, nitrogen, maiz
