I Need Help! The Journey of a Novice Interpreter with Their Mentor and Coach

My coach always made sure that center of our sessions was to achieve long-term excellent performance. I would present a problem area in my work that I wanted to improve, and my coach would focus our meetings on how we can better this problem, but also ensure that this issue would longer linger in my work. That approach was successful, as that problem area was improved, and it no longer remains in my work. Therefore, one of the end products from my coaching was long-term excellent performance

Cosmological black holes and the direction of time

Macroscopic irreversible processes emerge from fundamental physical laws of reversible character. The source of the local irreversibility seems to be not in the laws themselves but in the initial and boundary conditions of the equations that represent the laws. In this work we propose that the screening of currents by black hole event horizons determines, locally, a preferred direction for the flux of electromagnetic energy. We study the growth of black hole event horizons due to the cosmological expansion and accretion of cosmic microwave background radiation, for different cosmological models. We propose generalized McVittie co-moving metrics and integrate the rate of accretion of cosmic microwave background radiation onto a supermassive black hole over cosmic time. We find that for flat, open, and closed Friedmann cosmological models, the ratio of the total area of the black hole event horizons with respect to the area of a radial co-moving space-like hypersurface always increases. Since accretion of cosmic radiation sets an absolute lower limit to the total matter accreted by black holes, this implies that the causal past and future are not mirror symmetric for any spacetime event. The asymmetry causes a net Poynting flux in the global future direction; the latter is in turn related to the ever increasing thermodynamic entropy. Thus, we expose a connection between four different "time arrows": cosmological, electromagnetic, gravitational, and thermodynamic.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures in Foundations of Science (2017

The effect of density on growth, sex ratio, survival, and biochemical composition of the red cherry shrimp, Neocaridina davidi Bouvier, 1904, was studied to determine optimum rearing conditions in this ornamental species. It was tested whether gender segregation affected growth and survival of the species. To test the effect of density (Experiment 1), hatched juvenile shrimp were kept at three different densities: 2.5, 5, and 10 individuals l-1 (D2.5, D5 and D10, respectively). To test the effect of gender segregation (Experiment 2), 30-day juveniles were reared in three conditions: culture with only females, culture with only males, and mixed culture (females: males 1:1) at 5 individuals l-1 density. Experiments lasted 90 days, and shrimp were weighted either every 30 days (Experiment 1) or 15 days (Experiment 2). At day 90, females kept at D2.5 weighted 45% more than females stocked at D10 (P 0.05). Males at D2.5 weighted 29% more than D5 and D10 (P < 0.05). Survival was high and unaffected by treatment. Sexual differentiation did not differ among treatments. Females from D2.5 had the lowest lipid and protein content, which would occur if they had a higher spawning. Males from D2.5 had higher content of proteins, probably due to their larger size. Gender segregation had no effect over growth and survival; females grew up to a larger size than males both in monosex and mixed culture. It was shown that given to their non-aggressive behavior, N. davidi is tolerant to a highdensity condition, which makes it feasible as an ornamental species. In the last decades, the service sector has not only increased their presence in the global economic scenario, but it also has suffered deep qualitative transformations, including the emergence and the rapid growth of a number of activities that are characterized by high innovative standards and their contribution to a considerable growth in productivity. We refer to the so called “knowledge intensive services”, which include activities as diverse as accounting and legal services, architecture, audiovisuals, engineering, software, advertising, research and development (R&D), health and education. All these activities share two main features: a) they require an intensive use of high skilled human resources; b) they use and produce information and knowledge to deliver services to their customers. Global value chains have been created in recent years around these activities, which are highly tradable, something that has led to an intense competition between firms and countries to participate and upgrade within those chains. This paper gathers evidence regarding the growing relevance of these services in the global economy. It also analyzes the determinants of competitiveness in those industries, discusses the role and perspectives of Latin America and finally suggests some policy lessons for our region.Fil: Lopez, Andres Flavio. Fil: Lopez, Andres Flavio. Deterioration of willow seeds during storage

    Get PDF
Willow (Salix spp.) seeds are able to tolerate desiccation, but differ from typical orthodox seeds in that they lose viability in a few days at room temperature, and in that the chloroplasts in embryo tissues do not dedifferentiate during maturation drying, thus retaining chlorophyll and maintaining intact their thylakoid membranes. In the present study, we investigated the damage generated in willow seeds during storage under appropriate conditions to exclude the eventual generation of reactive oxygen species by photooxidation. To this end, we measured different indicators of molecular damage, such as changes in the fatty acid profile, protein degradation, nuclease activities, and DNA damage, and evaluated normal germination and total germination in seeds stored for one, ten and sixteen years. We found: (i) a decrease in the fraction of unsaturated fatty acids; (ii) changes in the protein profile due to a decrease in protein solubility; (iii) activation of nucleases; and (iv) DNA fragmentation. Taken together, our findings identified programmed cell death as a key mechanism in seed deterioration during storage. We also found that, although the seeds maintained high percentages of total germination, the death program had already started in the seeds stored for ten years and was more advanced in those stored for sixteen years.Fil: Lopez Fernandez, Maria Paula.
