    Stationary state volume fluctuations in a granular medium

    A statistical description of static granular material requires ergodic sampling of the phase space spanned by the different configurations of the particles. We periodically fluidize a column of glass beads and find that the sequence of volume fractions phi of post-fluidized states is history independent and Gaussian distributed about a stationary state. The standard deviation of phi exhibits, as a function of phi, a minimum corresponding to a maximum in the number of statistically independent regions. Measurements of the fluctuations enable us to determine the compactivity X, a temperature-like state variable introduced in the statistical theory of Edwards and Oakeshott [Physica A {\bf 157}, 1080 (1989)].Comment: published with minor change

    Use of a New Portable Instrumented Impactor on the NASA Composite Crew Module Damage Tolerance Program

    Damage tolerance performance is critical to composite structures because surface impacts at relatively low energies may result in a significant strength loss. For certification, damage tolerance criteria require aerospace vehicles to meet design loads while containing damage at critical locations. Data from standard small coupon testing are difficult to apply to larger more complex structures. Due to the complexity of predicting both the impact damage and the residual properties, damage tolerance is demonstrated primarily by testing. A portable, spring-propelled, impact device was developed which allows the impact damage response to be investigated on large specimens, full-scale components, or entire vehicles. During impact, both the force history and projectile velocity are captured. The device was successfully used to demonstrate the damage tolerance performance of the NASA Composite Crew Module. The impactor was used to impact 18 different design features at impact energies up to 35 J. Detailed examples of these results are presented, showing impact force histories, damage inspection results, and response to loading

    Energy level decay processes in Ho3+-doped tellurite glass relevant to the 3-”m transition

    The primary excited state decay processes relating to the 5I6 --> 5I7 at 2.9 um laser transition in singly Ho3+-doped tellurite (TZBG) glass have been investigated in detail using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Selective laser excitation of the 5I6 energy level at 1151 nm and 5I7 energy level at 1958 nm has established that the rate of energy transfer up-conversion between holmium ions excited to the 5I7 level is negligible for Ho3+ concentrations up to 4 mol. %. Excited state absorption was not observed from either the 5I7 or 5I6 levels and the luminescence from the 5I7 and 5I6 energy levels was measured to peak at 2050 nm and 2930 nm, respectively. The 5I6 level has a low luminescence efficiency of 8.9% due to strong nonradiative multiphonon relaxation. In contrast, decay from the 5I7 level is essentially fully radiative. A linear decrease in the decay time of the 5I6 level with Ho3+ concentration augmentation results from energy transfer to OH ions in the glass (with NOH=8.2x10^17 ions cm^-3) and reduces the luminescence efficiency of the 5I6 level to 8% for [Ho3+]=4 mol. %. Numerical simulation of a fiber laser incorporating 4 mol. % Ho3ĂŸ showed that a population inversion of 7.8% is reached for square pulses of 100 us duration and a repetition frequency of 20 Hz at a moderate pump intensity of 418 kW cm^-2 if energy transfer to OH- radicals is neglected

    The benefits of portfolio diversification is a central tenet implicit to modern financial theory and practice. Linked to diversification is the notion of breadth. Breadth is correctly thought of as the number of in- dependent bets available to an investor. Conventionally applications us- ing breadth frequently assume only the number of separate bets. There may be a large discrepancy between these two interpretations. We uti- lize a simple singular-value decomposition (SVD) and the Keiser-Gutman stopping criterion to select the integer-valued effective dimensionality of the correlation matrix of returns. In an emerging market such as South African we document an estimated breadth that is considerably lower than anticipated. This lack of diversification may be because of market concentration, exposure to the global commodity cycle and local currency volatility. We discuss some practical extensions to a more statistically correct interpretation of market breadth, and its theoretical implications for both global and domestic investors.Comment: Less technical rewrite. 12 Pages, 6 Figures (.eps

    From everyday conversation to political action: Talking austerity in online ‘third spaces’

    Taking forward a new agenda for online political deliberation – the study of everyday political talk in non-political, online ‘third spaces’ – this article examines the dynamics of political talk across three general interest UK-based online forums. The quantitative analysis found that discussions about austerity were just as likely to emerge from non-political discussions as they were ones that began as ‘political’, demonstrating the links people made between everyday experiences and public policy. Our qualitative analysis represents the first real attempt to analyse political actions within third spaces, with some striking outcomes. Over half of all political discussions led to at least one political action (with significant variation between forums). The findings demonstrate that while such third spaces remain concerned with the preoccupations of everyday life, they can and do perform a role of mobilizing agent towards political participation

    A conserved set of maternal genes? Insights from a molluscan transcriptome

    The early animal embryo is entirely reliant on maternal gene products for a ‘jump-start’ that transforms a transcriptionally inactive embryo into a fully functioning zygote. Despite extensive work on model species, it has not been possible to perform a comprehensive comparison of maternally-provisioned transcripts across the Bilateria because of the absence of a suitable dataset from the Lophotrochozoa. As part of an ongoing effort to identify the maternal gene that determines left-right asymmetry in snails, we have generated transcriptome data from 1 to 2-cell and ~32-cell pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) embryos. Here, we compare these data to maternal transcript datasets from other bilaterian metazoan groups, including representatives of the Ecydysozoa and Deuterostomia. We found that between 5 and 10% of all L. stagnalis maternal transcripts (~300-400 genes) are also present in the equivalent arthropod (Drosophila melanogaster), nematode (Caenorhabditis elegans), urochordate (Ciona intestinalis) and chordate (Homo sapiens, Mus musculus, Danio rerio) datasets. While the majority of these conserved maternal transcripts (“COMATs”) have housekeeping gene functions, they are a non-random subset of all housekeeping genes, with an overrepresentation of functions associated with nucleotide binding, protein degradation and activities associated with the cell cycle. We conclude that a conserved set of maternal transcripts and their associated functions may be a necessary starting point of early development in the Bilateria.
