The Pest Status of Yellowjackets in Ohio (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)
Since 1975 in Ohio, there has been an escalation in the number of complaints and inquiries regarding yellowjackets (Vespula and Dolichovespula spp.) to the Ohio pest control operators, the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service (OCES) County Agents and the OCES Entomologists at the Ohio State University. A survey was distributed in May 1985 to both groups in order to determine the pest status of yellowjackets in Ohio. The results of this survey strongly suggest that yelIowjackets in Ohio are largely an economic pest , with most economic disturbances associated with homeowners, outdoor businesses, and outdoor recreational facilities
Racial, Ethnic, and Socioeconomic Disparities in Exposure to Fast Food in Hillsborough County, Florida
Recent studies have linked the alarming obesity epidemic in the U.S. to the growth of the fast-food restaurant industry, which offers convenient service alongside inexpensive and high-calorie food. As the number of fast-food outlets increases, research demonstrates that their geographic location plays a significant role in creating obesogenic environments, potentially exposing socially disadvantaged groups to unhealthy nutrition choices provided by these outlets. Whereas previous studies have examined the distribution of positive health amenities such as supermarkets and health-food stores, there is a growing need to evaluate the socio-demographic characteristics of neighborhoods that contain negative health entities such as fast-food outlets. Accordingly, this study sought to determine whether access to fast-food restaurants varied by neighborhood racial/ethnic composition and socioeconomic status in Hillsborough County, Florida—an area that is relatively understudied in terms of its food environment and related health implications. Bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses indicated that race and ethnicity play a pervasive role in explaining the prevalence of fast-food outlets in the county. The results reveal a significantly higher density of fast-food outlets near neighborhoods characterized by a larger proportion of racial/ethnic minorities, even after controlling for the effects of socioeconomic factors and locational characteristics. The study underscores the need to consider both the healthy and unhealthy aspects of the food environment in formulating policy solutions for addressing the obesity epidemic
The pragmatic function of child directed utterances in the athome environment: the impact of maternal education.
Research focused on the pragmatic function of child-directed speech (CDS) has shown differences between socioeconomic groups (Hart y Risley 1995; Mastin et al. 2016). Since these studies were carried out in populations that differ socially, culturally and linguistically from the Argentinean population, the description of linguistic environment of different socioeconomic groups of Argentina may contribute to account for the variability in children's early linguistic experiences. This work intends to study the relationship between the socioeconomic status and the pragmatic function of the CDS considering children’s age and maternal education by analyzing 40 hours of audio recording in the homes of 20 children (8-20 months of age). Results showed that higher maternal education increases comments and reports probability and decreases directives probability. Results also showed that questions’ probability decreased with children’s age.Fil: Ramirez, MarÃa Laura. Universidad de Buenos Aires; ArgentinaFil: Ibañez, MarÃa Ileana. Mortality among World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers, 2002-2011
BACKGROUND:
Rescue and recovery workers responding to the 2001 collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) sustained exposures to toxic chemicals and have elevated rates of multiple morbidities.
METHODS:
Using data from the World Trade Center Health Program and the National Death Index for 2002-2011, we examined standardized mortality ratios (SMR) and proportional cancer mortality ratios (PCMR) with indirect standardization for age, sex, race, and calendar year to the U.S. general population, as well as associations between WTC-related environmental exposures and all-cause mortality.
RESULTS:
We identified 330 deaths among 28,918 responders (SMR 0.43, 95%CI 0.39-0.48). No cause-specific SMRs were meaningfully elevated. PCMRs were elevated for neoplasms of lymphatic and hematopoietic tissue (PCMR 1.76, 95%CI 1.06-2.75). Mortality hazard ratios showed no linear trend with exposure.
CONCLUSIONS:
Consistent with a healthy worker effect, all-cause mortality among responders was not elevated. There was no clear association between intensity and duration of exposure and mortality. Surveillance is needed to monitor the proportionally higher cancer mortality attributed to lymphatic/hematopoietic neoplasms
Quantum localization and cantori in chaotic billiards
We study the quantum behaviour of the stadium billiard. We discuss how the
interplay between quantum localization and the rich structure of the classical
phase space influences the quantum dynamics. The analysis of this model leads
to new insight in the understanding of quantum properties of classically
chaotic systems.Comment: 4 pages in RevTex with 4 eps figures include
