    Effectiveness of an educational intervention on the attitudes toward sport psychology of athletic training students

    Although previous research of athletes\u27 attitudes toward sport psychology consulting (Anderson et al. 2004, Martin, 2005) has proven its usefulness, the literature seems to be lacking any similar assessment of athletic training students\u27 attitudes toward sport psychology. Neither has the effectiveness of an educational intervention been assessed with regard to athletic training students\u27 attitudes toward sport psychology. This is surprising given the important role that sport psychology plays in injury rehabilitation. As a result, the primary aim of the current study was to assess the attitudes of athletic training students toward sport psychology and, subsequently, determine the effectiveness of an education intervention on their attitudes toward sport psychology. A secondary aim was to determine the effectiveness of the educational intervention on athletic training students\u27 sport psychology behaviors. Athletic training students (N = 160) were assessed using a modified version of the Sport Psychology Attitudes-Revised Form (Martin et al. 2002). Athletic training students\u27 attitudes toward sport psychology were also evaluated with respect to their gender and experience with sport psychology. Results revealed that female athletic training students scored significantly lower on the cultural preference scale (M = 3.57, SD = 1.11) than their male counterparts (M = 3.91, SD = 0.90), t (157.9) = 2.14, p \u3c 0.05, ES = 0.14. Furthermore, females also scored significantly lower on the personal openness scale (M = 4.47, SD = 0.91) when compared to males (M = 4.96, SD = 0.95), t (158) = 3.6, p \u3c 0.05, d = 0.3. Additionally, athletic training students who had experience with sport psychology scored significantly higher on confidence in sport psychology consulting (M = 4.67, SD = 0.74) than those who had no previous experience (M = 4.38, SD = 0.90), t (158) = 2.26, p \u3c 0.05, d = 0.2). When a series of 2 X 3 repeated measures ANOVAs were computed to determine the differential effect of the educational intervention on athletic training students\u27 attitudes, scores on the confidence in sport psychology consulting scale significantly increased for the members of the experimental group from pre-test to post-test. F (1.17, 316) = 6.86, p \u3c .01, ES = .04. Additionally, a 2 X 2 repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the educational intervention on sport psychology behaviors revealed that members of the experimental group reported a significant increase in their reported use of sport psychology behaviors when compared to those in the control group F (1, 158) = 496, p \u3c .01, ES = .75.     Psychological readiness: Is this assessment valuable to athletic trainers in understanding athletes\u27 adherence and compliance

    Despite the many documented psychological reactions athletes experiences as a result of athletic injuries, very little, if any psychological assessment is being done to evaluate their readiness to embark on their rehabilitation. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to determine if psychological readiness influences athletes\u27 adherence and compliance to their rehabilitation programs. A secondary purpose was to determine the impact psychological readiness had on perceived versus actual completion rates of rehabilitation programs. Injured college student athletes\u27 (N=70) psychological readiness were assessed (using the transtheoretical model of behavior change 10) to determine its effect on compliance, adherence rates and perceived versus actual completion rates of rehabilitation programs. Results revealed that participants who were advanced in their stages of change generally reported an increase in self efficacy, utilization of pros as opposed to cons and use of behavioral when compared to experiential processes of change. No significant relationships were found between psychological readiness and athletes\u27 adherence, compliance and their perceived versus actual completion rates of rehabilitation programs

    Low-Abundance Resistant Mutations in HIV-1 Subtype C Antiretroviral Therapy-Naïve Individuals as Revealed by Pyrosequencing

    Given the recent scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in sub-Saharan Africa, we sought to determine how often and at what levels do drug-resistant mutant variants exist in ART-naïve HIV subtype C infected individuals. Samples from 10 ART-naïve Zambian individuals were subjected to ultra-deep pyrosequencing (UDPS) to characterize the frequency of low-abundance drug resistance mutations in the pol gene. Low-abundance clinically relevant variants were detected for nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) and protease inhibitors (PIs) in eight of the ten subjects. Intermediate to high-level resistance was predicted for the majority of NRTIs. Mutations conferring resistance to most firstline and some second-line therapy drugs were also observed. UDPS detected a number of additional major resistant mutations suggesting that these individuals may have an increased risk of virological failure after initiating ART. Moreover, the effectiveness of first-line and even some second-line ART may be compromised in this setting

    Pan-Tropical Analysis of Climate Effects on Seasonal Tree Growth

    Climate models predict a range of changes in tropical forest regions, including increased average temperatures, decreased total precipitation, reduced soil moisture and alterations in seasonal climate variations. These changes are directly related to the increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations, primarily CO2. Assessing seasonal forest growth responses to climate is of utmost importance because woody tissues, produced by photosynthesis from atmospheric CO2, water and light, constitute the main component of carbon sequestration in the forest ecosystem. In this paper, we combine intra-annual tree growth measurements from published tree growth data and the corresponding monthly climate data for 25 pan-tropical forest sites. This meta-analysis is designed to find the shared climate drivers of tree growth and their relative importance across pan-tropical forests in order to improve carbon uptake models in a global change context. Tree growth reveals significant intra-annual seasonality at seasonally dry sites or in wet tropical forests. Of the overall variation in tree growth, 28.7% was explained by the site effect, i.e. the tree growth average per site. The best predictive model included four climate variables: precipitation, solar radiation (estimated with extrasolar radiation reaching the atmosphere), temperature amplitude and relative soil water content. This model explained more than 50% of the tree growth variations across tropical forests. Precipitation and solar radiation are the main seasonal drivers of tree growth, causing 19.8% and 16.3% of the tree growth variations. Both have a significant positive association with tree growth. These findings suggest that forest productivity due to tropical tree growth will be reduced in the future if climate extremes, such as droughts, become more frequent

    The Role of Needle-Based Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy in the Evaluation of Pancreatic Cystic Lesions: A Systematic Review

    The prevalence of pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) has increased recently due to the increased use of cross-sectional abdominal imaging and the ageing global population. Current diagnostic techniques are inadequate to distinguish between PCLs that require surgery, close surveillance, or expectant management. This has resulted in increased morbidity from both inappropriately aggressive and conservative management strategies. Needle-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (nCLE) has allowed microscopic examination and visual delineation of the surface epithelium of PCLs. Landmark studies in this decade have correlated nCLE and histological findings and identified characteristics differentiating various types of PCLs. Subsequent studies have confirmed the high diagnostic yield of nCLE and its diagnostic utility in PCLs with an equivocal diagnosis. Moreover, nCLE has been shown to improve the diagnostic yield of PCLs. This will help avoid unnecessary pancreatic surgery, which carries significant morbidity and mortality risks. The early detection of high-grade dysplasia in PCLs will provide early surgical treatment and improve outcomes for pancreatic cancer. Despite the high upfront cost of nCLE, the improved diagnostic accuracy and resultant appropriate management have resulted in improved cost effectiveness. Refining the procedure technique and limiting the procedure length have significantly improved the safety of nCLE. A structured training program and device improvements to allow more complete mapping of the pancreatic cyst epithelium will be crucial for the widespread adoption of this promising technology

    Athletes’ Expectations About Sport-Injury Rehabilitation: A Cross-Cultural Study

    Context: Athletes enter injury rehabilitation with certain expectations about the recovery process, outcomes, and the professional providing treatment. Their expectations influence the effectiveness of the assistance received and affect the overall rehabilitation process. Expectations may vary depending on numerous factors such as sport experience, gender, sport-type and cultural background. Unfortunately, limited information is available on athletes’ expectations about sport injury rehabilitation. Objective: To examine possible differences in athletes’ expectations about sport injury rehabilitation based on their country of residence and type of sport (physical contact versus non-physical contact). Design: A cross-sectional design. Setting: Recreational, collegiate, and professional athletes from the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK) and Finland were surveyed. Participants: Of the 1209 athletes ranging from 12 to 80 years of age (Mage = 23.46 ± 7.91), of which 529 US [80%], 253 UK [86%], and 199 Finnish [82%] provided details of their geographical location, were included in the final analyses. Main Outcome Measures: The Expectations about Athletic Training (EAAT) questionnaire was used to determine athletes’ expectations about personal commitment, facilitative conditions, and the expertise of the sports medicine professional (Clement et al., 2012). Results: 3x2 MANCOVA revealed significant main effects for country (p = .0001, ηp2 = .055) and sport type (p = .0001, ηp2 = .023). Specifically, US athletes were found to have higher expectations of personal commitment and facilitative conditions than their UK and Finnish counterparts. Athletes participating in physical contact sports had higher expectations of facilitative conditions and the expertise of the sports medicine professional (SMP) as compared to athletes participating in non-physical contact sports.     Myocardial deformation in malignant mitral valve prolapse: A shifting paradigm to dynamic mitral valve–ventricular interactions

    ObjectivesThis study sought to assess the value of myocardial deformation using strain echocardiography in patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and severe ventricular arrhythmia and to evaluate its impact on rhythmic risk stratification.BackgroundMVP is a common valvular affection with an overly benign course. Unpredictably, selected patients will present severe ventricular arrhythmia.MethodsPatients with MVP as the only cause of aborted SCD (MVP-aSCD: ventricular fibrillation and monomorphic and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia) with no other obvious reversible cause were identified. Nonconsecutive patients referred for the echocardiographic evaluation of MVP were enrolled as a control cohort and dichotomized according to the presence or absence of premature ventricular contractions (MVP-PVC or MVP-No PVC, respectively). All patients had a comprehensive strain assessment of mechanical dispersion (MD), postsystolic shortening, and postsystolic index (PSI).ResultsA total of 260 patients were enrolled (20 MVP-aSCD, 54 MVP-PVC, and 186 MVP-No PVC). Deformation pattern discrepancies were observed with a higher PSI value in MVP-aSCD than that in MVP-PVC (4.6 ± 2.0 vs. 2.9 ± 3.7, p = 0.014) and a higher MD value than that in MVP-No PVC (46.0 ± 13.0 vs. 36.4 ± 10.8, p = 0.002). In addition, PSI and MD increased the prediction of severe ventricular arrhythmia on top of classical risk factors in MVP. Net reclassification improvement was 61% (p = 0.008) for PSI and 71% (p = 0.001) for MD.ConclusionsIn MVP, myocardial deformation analysis with strain echocardiography identified specific contraction patterns with postsystolic shortening leading to increased values of PSI and MD, translating the importance of mitral valve–myocardial interactions in the arrhythmogenesis of severe ventricular arrhythmia. Strain echocardiography may provide important implications for rhythmic risk stratification in MVP

    Introduction Sickle cell disease is an inherited genetic disorder characterized by the presence of abnormal hemoglobin, leading to the deformation of red blood cells and serious complications. It is a major public health problem in many countries of inter-tropical Africa. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, over a million people (2%) are affected by this hemoglobinopathy. Purpose This study aimed to scientifically validate the anti-sickle cell activity of aqueous extracts of S. occindentalis seeds and to identify the chemical constituents responsible for this activity. Methods In this study, we used S. occidentalis seeds harvested at Ilebo in Central Kasai Province, while the blood samples used were taken from sickle-cell patients. The phytochemical composition was determined according to the standard method described previously by Iteku et al. and Nkasa et al. The Emmel test was carried out according to the standard protocol described previously by Bongo et al. Results The results obtained in this study showed that the seeds of this plant are rich in secondary metabolites such as total polyphenols (flavonoids, anthocyanins, leuco-athocyanins, tannins, and saponins), di-terpenes, alkaloids, and bound quinones. However, these seeds do not contain triterpenoids and steroids. Total seed extracts from this plant showed significant anti-sickle cell activity.     Circadian rhythms have significant effects on leaf-to-canopy scale gas exchange under field conditions

    Background Molecular clocks drive oscillations in leaf photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and other cell and leaf-level processes over ~24 h under controlled laboratory conditions. The influence of such circadian regulation over whole-canopy fluxes remains uncertain; diurnal CO2 and H2O vapor flux dynamics in the field are currently interpreted as resulting almost exclusively from direct physiological responses to variations in light, temperature and other environmental factors. We tested whether circadian regulation would affect plant and canopy gas exchange at the Montpellier European Ecotron. Canopy and leaf-level fluxes were constantly monitored under field-like environmental conditions, and under constant environmental conditions (no variation in temperature, radiation, or other environmental cues). Results We show direct experimental evidence at canopy scales of the circadian regulation of daytime gas exchange: 20–79 % of the daily variation range in CO2 and H2O fluxes occurred under circadian entrainment in canopies of an annual herb (bean) and of a perennial shrub (cotton). We also observed that considering circadian regulation improved performance by 8–17 % in commonly used stomatal conductance models. Conclusions Our results show that circadian controls affect diurnal CO2 and H2O flux patterns in entire canopies in field-like conditions, and its consideration significantly improves model performance. Circadian controls act as a ‘memory’ of the past conditions experienced by the plant, which synchronizes metabolism across entire plant canopies
