Corn productivity can be improved using hybrid varieties. Evaluation of inbreds and hybrids were required to obtain information of general combining ability and specific combining ability. The objective of this research was to find out inbred combining ability and hybrids heterosis from crosses of 10 inbreds (5 inbreds from PT. Agri Makmur Pertiwi and 5 introduced inbreds) based on yield and yield components character. Diallel mating design using method 2 model 1 of Griffing model and the testing were conducted from January to August 2012. The tests using a randomized block design with three replications. PWM-1 (PT. Agri Makmur Pertiwi group) and PWI-5 (introduced group) have GCA better than other inbreds on grain yield, ear length, ear diameter, number of seed rows, shelling percentage and 1,000 seeds weight. Hybrids PWM-5 x PWM-1, PWI-5 x PWM-1 and PWI-5 x PWM-5 have a positive SCA values and also inbred parent have a positive GCA value. Intercrosses of introduced group had the high heterosis for all characters. PWI-4 x PWI-2 had highest SCA and heterobeltiosis for ear diameter and 1,000 seeds weight, and for number of seed rows was PWI-5 x PWI-2

The problem in this research is the low students achievement on social studies IVB grade students of SDN 4 Pekanbaru with average 68,47 and clasical completeness 42,86% within Minimum Criteria Completeness (KKM) stipulated by schools is 75. The study is in the form of classroom action research (PTK) which aims to improve students achievement on social studies IVB SDN 4 Pekanbaru with the application of the approach Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). After applied the approach Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) increased student learning outcomes in UAS I with an average 70.71 with a large increase from basic score 3.27% with classical completeness amounted to 66.67% (not completed) the average UAS II was 81.90 with a large increase from basic score of 19.61% with classical completeness 85.72% (completed). The average percentage of the activity of teachers in the first cycle of the first meeting is 56.25% with sufficient category and then increased by 12.5% in the second meeting be 68.75% with the good category. At the second cycle of the first meeting the average percentage of the activity of teachers increased by 6.25% to 75% with the good category and at the second meeting increased by 12.5% to 87.5% with very good category. Besides the activity of students in the first cycle the first meeting with the average percentage was 56.25% with sufficient category increased by 6.25% in the second meeting to 62.5% with the good category. At the second cycle of the first meeting the average percentage of the activity of students increased by 12.5% to 75% with the good category and at the second meeting increased by 12.5% to 87.5% with very good category. Based on these results it can be concluded that the application of the approach of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) can improve learning outcomes social studies IVB grade students of SDN 4 Pekanbaru

Removal of Copper (II) Ions in Aqueous Solutions by Sorption onto Fly Ash

    Get PDF
The ability of fly ash to adsorp Cu(II) ions from two different coal combustion systems was studied. Optimum removal was found at pH 5, contact time 30 minutes and 60 minutes for Fly Ash 1 and Fly Ash 2, respectively, and dosage 10 g/l. The difference in adsorption capacity between both fly ashes may be due to their carbon fraction and CaO content. The removal of Cu (II) ions was caused by both adsorption and/or precipitation. Precipitation is enhanced by lowering the carbon fraction and increasing the CaO content. The adsorption isotherm showed that the Langmuir model fitted well to the experimental data of both fly ashes. A thermodynamic study was conducted at three different temperatures: 25 °C, 45 °C, and 60 °C. The adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic and were more favorable at higher temperature

Lejeunea gradsteinii is described and illustrated as a new species from Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah. The plant stands out by 1) lobules with flat free margin and 2 teeth, the first tooth consisting of (1)-2 cells, 2) whitish-green plant color, 3) weakly crenulate margins of leaves, underleaves, female bracts and bracteoles, 4) basal cells of leaf lobes forming a weak vitta, 5) well-developed trigones and scarce intermediate thickenings, 6) deeply bifid underleaves (to 2/3) with rounded tips, 7) long male shoots with up to 13 pair of bracts, and 8) longexserted, obovate-clavate perianths with 5 sharp keels ending into short auricles. Lejeunea gradsteinii is most closely related to L. kodamae Ikegami et Inoue and L. bidentula Herzog, all of which have 2-toothed lobules

Protocol conception for safe selection of mechanical ventilation settings for respiratory failure patients

    Get PDF
Background and Objective Mechanical ventilation is the primary form of care provided to respiratory failure patients. Limited guidelines and conflicting results from major clinical trials means selection of mechanical ventilation settings relies heavily on clinician experience and intuition. Determining optimal mechanical ventilation settings is therefore difficult, where non-optimal mechanical ventilation can be deleterious. To overcome these difficulties, this research proposes a model-based method to manage the wide range of possible mechanical ventilation settings, while also considering patient-specific conditions and responses. Methods This study shows the design and development of the “VENT” protocol, which integrates the single compartment linear lung model with clinical recommendations from landmark studies, to aid clinical decision-making in selecting mechanical ventilation settings. Using retrospective breath data from a cohort of 24 patients, 3,566 and 2,447 clinically implemented VC and PC settings were extracted respectively. Using this data, a VENT protocol application case study and clinical comparison is performed, and the prediction accuracy of the VENT protocol is validated against actual measured outcomes of pressure and volume. Results The study shows the VENT protocols’ potential use in narrowing an overwhelming number of possible mechanical ventilation setting combinations by up to 99.9%. The comparison with retrospective clinical data showed that only 33% and 45% of clinician settings were approved by the VENT protocol. The unapproved settings were mainly due to exceeding clinical recommended settings. When utilising the single compartment model in the VENT protocol for forecasting peak pressures and tidal volumes, median [IQR] prediction error values of 0.75 [0.31 – 1.83] cmH2O and 0.55 [0.19 – 1.20] mL/kg were obtained. Conclusions Comparing the proposed protocol with retrospective clinically implemented settings shows the protocol can prevent harmful mechanical ventilation setting combinations for which clinicians would be otherwise unaware. The VENT protocol warrants a more detailed clinical study to validate its potential usefulness in a clinical setting
