Interview of Frank McKee, M.A. English, M.A. Ed. Admin.

Frank McKee was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1948. His father was a World World II veteran and battery worker, his mother a key-punch operator and homemaker. Growing up in Olney, only fifteen minutes from La Salle’s campus, Frank attended Catholic schools his entire childhood. In 1967 he enrolled at La Salle as an English major but always knew that education was his true passion. Frank lived off campus and worked throughout his undergraduate experience, however, La Salle remained a social hub for him. In 1971, Frank graduated and shortly thereafter was hired to teach at North Catholic High School. Concurrently, Frank began a six-year active duty contract with the Army as a Electronic Warfare Operator Analyst. Working covertly stateside, Frank was able to compartmentalize teaching and spying while also completing two Master’s degrees at Villanova. He received a Master’s in both English and Educational Administration with a Principal’s certification. By age 27, Frank’s contract with the military expired in the same summer that he was hired to be English Department Chair for Lower Moreland County schools. Frank worked in Lower Moreland for thirty-five years under a number of different titles. Frank’s accomplishments include being Principal in both middle and high school, coaching track-and-field and creating an American Studies program for the district. Frank was encourage to return to La Salle by Dr. Francis Ryan as an adjunct professor in 1988 for the night program. Frank stayed, teaching one or two nights a week, for four years until his youngest daughter was born in 1992. He admitted during our interview that he could have provided more support to the students and that disappointment was a factor in his returning a second time. Again, Dr. Ryan reached out to Frank, this time to teach in the American Studies program in 2012. In the same year, Frank retired from Lower Moreland County which allowed him to focus all his energy towards La Salle. On June 1, 2017, when Dr. Ryan vacates the American Studies Department Chair, Frank will be promoted to the same position. The interview focuses mainly on Frank’s career as an educator and his reflections and ambitions towards La Salle University

Revisiting logistical friendliness: perspectives of international freight forwarders

Logistical friendliness (unfriendliness) refers to the ease (difficulty) of arranging international freight operations to/from a particular country. The present paper builds upon previous research by 1) examininglogistical friendliness and unfriendliness as two different constructs (rather than as opposite ends of the same continuum), and 2) linking the delineation of logistically friendly and unfriendly countries with the reasons for friendliness (unfriendliness). The study results could be quite valuable with corporate decisions as to which countries to do business in, as well as with the appropriate organizational strategies for entering the chosen countries

Examining international freight forwarder services: the perspectives of current providers and users

The service quality literature indicates a variety of gaps between expected and perceived quality, and that service quality is a key determinant of customer satisfaction. As such, the present paper examines international freight forwarders (IFFs) and IFF customers with respect to various services which might be provided by IFFs; the paper also reports on user satisfaction with their IFFs. The study results identified several mismatches between what the forwarders are currently providing and what services the users view as important. In addition, the satisfaction ratings suggest that forwarders’ performance has room for improvement

Some propositions regarding rail-truck intermodal: an empirical analysis

Using data compiled from a recent of businesses located in a major metropolitan area, the present paper evaluates a series of propositions concerning rail-truck intermodal. In general, the study results tend to support the various propositions, and key findings suggest that users and nonusers of intermodal transportation have different perceptions about the quality of, and barriers to, intermodal service

A new peat bog testate amoeba transfer function and quantitative palaeohydrological reconstructions from southern Patagonia

Testate amoebae have been extensively used as proxies for environmental change and palaeoclimate reconstructions in European and North American peatlands. The presence of these micro-organisms near the peat surface is generally significantly linked to the local water table depth (WTD) and therefore preservation of the amoeba shells downcore allows for water table reconstructions over millennia. In the last decades, attention for the palaeoecology of the southern Patagonian peat bogs has increased, partly because of the particular climatological setting under the influence of the southern westerlies. These atypical peat bogs are characterised by a wide range of water tables, from wet hollows to hummocks exceeding 100 cm above the water table, and a dominance of Sphagnum magellanicum on low lawns up to the highest hummocks. Here we present the first transfer function for this region that allows for reliable WTD reconstructions, along with 2k-year palaeorecords from local peat bogs.A modern dataset (155 samples) was sampled along transects from five bogs in 2012 and 2013. Measurements of WTD, pH and conductivity were taken for all samples. Transfer function model was based on the 2012 dataset while the 2013 samples served as an independent test set to validate the model. Besides the standard leave-one- out cross-validation we applied leave-one-site-out and leave-one transect-out cross-validation, which are effective means of verifying the degree of clustering in the dataset. To assure the environmental gradient had been evenly sampled we quantified the root-mean-squared error of prediction (RMSEP) individually for segments of this gradient.Ordinations showed a clear hydrological gradient in amoeba assemblages, with the dominant Assulina muscorum at the dry end and Amphitrema wrightianum and Difflugia globulosa at the wet end. Taxa as Nebela certesi and Nebela cockayni, possibly exclusive to the southern hemisphere, were identified and their optima and tolerances were determined. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that WTD was the most important environmental variable, accounting for 18% of the variance in amoeba assemblages. A weighted averaging-partial least squares model showed best performance in cross-validation and using the 2013 data as an independent test set. Any spatial autocorrelation was minimal although the model still appeared less effective in predicting WTD for sites not included in the training set. The segment-wise RMSEP showed that the WTD gradient was generally evenly sampled with RMSEP below 15 cm for most of the gradient, much lower than the standard deviation of the mean of all WTDs (26 cm).Preliminary results from peat cores sampled from the same peat bogs show surprisingly stable water tables over the last 2k years in Andorra bog but more variation in nearby Tierra Australis bog. Peat accumulation rates in Andorra bog are among the highest recorded in temperate bogs with around 4 m of peat accumulated during the last 2000 year

Competitive conditions in the Jamaican banking market 1998–2009

This paper presents an empirical assessment of the degree of competition within the Jamaican banking sector during the period 1998 to 2009. We employ a dynamic version of the Panzar — of banks that constitute over 90% of the banking market. Using the conventional statistical tests, we are unable to reject monopoly/perfect collusion for the merchant banking sector in Jamaica but find competitive conditions in the commercial banking sector. This contrasts with earlier findings using alternative estimators that find monopolistic competition in the market as a whole

Co-receptor and co-stimulation blockade for mixed chimerism and tolerance without myelosuppressive conditioning

BACKGROUND: A major challenge in the application of marrow transplantation as a route to immunological tolerance of a transplanted organ is to achieve hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) engraftment with minimal myelosuppressive treatments. RESULTS: We here describe a combined antibody protocol which can achieve long-term engraftment with clinically relevant doses of MHC-mismatched bone marrow, without the need for myelosuppressive drugs. Although not universally applicable in all strains, we achieved reliable engraftment in permissive strains with a two-stage strategy: involving first, treatment with anti-CD8 and anti-CD4 in advance of transplantation; and second, treatment with antibodies targeting CD4, CD8 and CD40L (CD154) at the time of marrow transplantation. Long-term mixed chimerism through co-receptor and co-stimulation blockade facilitated tolerance to donor-type skin grafts, without any evidence of donor-antigen driven regulatory T cells. CONCLUSION: We conclude that antibodies targeting co-receptor and co-stimulatory molecules synergise to enable mixed hematopoietic chimerism and central tolerance, showing that neither cytoreductive conditioning nor 'megadoses' of donor bone marrow are required for donor HSC to engraft in permissive strains
