    Disc Clearing of Young Stellar Objects: Evidence for Fast Inside-out Dispersal

    The time-scale over which and the modality by which young stellar objects (YSOs) disperse their circumstellar discs dramatically influences the eventual formation and evolution of planetary systems. By means of extensive radiative transfer (RT) modelling, we have developed a new set of diagnostic diagrams in the infrared colour-colour plane (K-[24] vs. K-[8]), to aid with the classification of the evolutionary stage of YSOs from photometric observations. Our diagrams allow the differentiation of sources with unevolved (primordial) discs from those evolving according to different clearing scenarios (e.g. homologous depletion vs. inside-out dispersal), as well as from sources that have already lost their disc. Classification of over 1500 sources in 15 nearby star-forming regions reveals that approximately 39 % of the sources lie in the primordial disc region, whereas between 31 % and 32 % disperse from the inside-out and up to 22 % of the sources have already lost their disc. Less than 2 % of the objects in our sample lie in the homogeneous draining regime. Time-scales for the transition phase are estimated to be typically a few 10^5 years independent of stellar mass. Therefore, regardless of spectral type, we conclude that currently available infrared photometric surveys point to fast (of order 10 % of the global disc lifetime) inside-out clearing as the preferred mode of disc dispersal.Comment: 31 pages, 21 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Lateral cephalometric analysis of asymptomatic volunteers and symptomatic patients with and without bilateral temporomandibular joint disk displacement

    Few studies of dentofacial and orthodontic structural relationships relative to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction have been reported. We undertook this investigation to determine any correlation of orthodontic and dentofacial characteristics with TMJ bilateral disc displacement. The population of patients was selected from a TMJ clinic where a control group of asymptomatic volunteers had been previously established and standardized. Differences in skeletal structural features were determined among three study groups: (1) asymptomatic volunteers with no TMJ disk displacement, (2) symptomatic patients with no TMJ disc displacement, and (3) symptomatic patients with bilateral TMJ disk displacement. Thirty-two asymptomatic volunteers without disk displacement (25 female, 7 male) were compared with the same number each of symptomatic patients without TMJ disk displacement and symptomatic patients with bilateral TMJ disk displacement. All subjects had undergone a standardized clinical examination, bilateral TMJ magnetic resonance imaging, and lateral cephalometric radiographic analysis. The groups were matched according to sex, TMJ status, age, and Angle classification of malocclusion. Seventeen lateral cephalometric radiographic cranial base, maxillomandibular, and vertical dimension variables were evaluated and compared among the study groups. The mean angle of SNB, or the intersection of the sella-nasion plane and the nasion–point B line (indicating mandibular retrognathism relative to cranial base), of the symptomatic patients-with-displacement group was significantly smaller than that in the asymptomatic volunteers and symptomatic patients without bilateral disk displacement (p \u3c 0.05). Female subjects showed smaller linear measurements of mandibular length, lower facial height, and total anterior facial height than male subjects in all three groups (p \u3c 0.05). The mean angle of ANB, or the intersection of the nasion–point A and nasion–point B planes (indicating retrognathism of mandible relative to maxilla), was significantly greater in female than in male subjects, in all groups (p \u3c 0.05). Symptomatic patients with bilateral disk displacement had a retropositioned mandible, indicated by a smaller mean SNB angle compared with that in asymptomatic volunteers and symptomatic patients with no disk displacement on either side. Lateral cephalometric radiographic assessment may improve predictability of TMJ disk displacement in orthodontic patients but is not diagnostic; nor does the assessment explain any cause-and-effect relationship. Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2011 RAS.We present synthetic observations of star-forming interstellar medium structures obtained by hydrodynamic calculations of a turbulent box under the influence of an ionizing radiation field. The morphological appearance of the pillar-like structures in optical emission lines is found to be very similar to observations of nearby star-forming regions. We calculate line profiles as a function of position along the pillars for collisionally excited [O III] λ5007, [N II] λ6584 and [S II] λ6717, which show typical full width at half-maximum of 2–4 km s−1. Spatially resolved emission-line diagnostic diagrams are also presented which show values in general agreement with observations of similar regions. The diagrams, however, also highlight significant spatial variations in the line ratios, including values that would be classically interpreted as shocked regions based on 1D photoionization calculations. These values tend to be instead the result of lines of sight intersecting which intersect for large portions of their lengths the ionized-toneutral transition regions in the gas. We caution therefore against a straightforward application of classical diagnostic diagrams and 1D photoionization calculations to spatially resolved observations of complex 3D star-forming regions.Peer reviewe

Whereas the neutral systems remain planar in this size range, a 2D-3D transition occurs at Ag5+ for the cationic system and at Ag42+ for the dicationic system. Neutral silver clusters can bind with nitrogen 3 or with the pi system of the base. However, positively charged clusters interact with nitrogen 7 and the neighboring carbonyl group. Thus, the cationic silver-DNA clusters present experimentally may preferentially interact at these sites. © 2017 Author(s)

    Accessing High Momentum States In Lattice QCD

    Two measures are defined to evaluate the coupling strength of smeared interpolating operators to hadronic states at a variety of momenta. Of particular interest is the extent to which strong overlap can be obtained with individual high-momentum states. This is vital to exploring hadronic structure at high momentum transfers on the lattice and addressing interesting phenomena observed experimentally. We consider a novel idea of altering the shape of the smeared operator to match the Lorentz contraction of the probability distribution of the high-momentum state, and show a reduction in the relative error of the two-point function by employing this technique. Our most important finding is that the overlap of the states becomes very sharp in the smearing parameters at high momenta and fine tuning is required to ensure strong overlap with these states.Comment: 10 page

    X-ray scattering from surfaces: discrete and continuous components of roughness

    Incoherent surface scattering yields a statistical description of the surface, due to the ensemble averaging over many independently sampled volumes. Depending on the state of the surface and direction of the scattering vector relative to the surface normal, the height distribution is discrete, continuous, or a combination of the two. We present a treatment for the influence of multimodal surface height distributions on Crystal Truncation Rod scattering. The effects of a multimodal height distribution are especially evident during in situ monitoring of layer-by-layer thin-film growth via Pulsed Laser Deposition. We model the total height distribution as a convolution of discrete and continuous components, resulting in a broadly applicable parameterization of surface roughness which can be applied to other scattering probes, such as electrons and neutrons. Convolution of such distributions could potentially be applied to interface or chemical scattering. Here we find that this analysis describes accurately our experimental studies of SrTiO3 annealing and homoepitaxial growth.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
