The Mediating Role Of EMS Teamwork As It Pertains To HR Factors And Perceived Environmental Performance

Little management theory or empirical results exist to guide managers in maximizing employee efforts to successfully implement Environmental Management Systems (EMS). In response, this study examines the relationship among Human Resource (HR) factors and employee perceptions of environmental performance. Four hundred thirty-seven (437) employees were surveyed in an organization with a well-developed EMS program and ISO 14001 certification. Results suggest that management support for EMS, EMS training, employee empowerment, and EMS rewards are related to perceived environmental performance. Furthermore, EMS teamwork plays a mediating role between some of independent variables and perceived environmental performance. Finally, implications for managers are discussed

Open Vesicocalicostomy for the Management of Transplant Ureteral Stricture

A 59-year-old male developed a proximal stricture of his transplant ureter ten years after a living donor renal transplant. Endoscopic management was unsuccessful, and the patient was temporized with percutaneous nephrostomy tubes for months. Eventually, it became clear he would require surgical revision. Intraoperatively, complete fibrosis of the renal hilum, and intrarenal location of the pelvis precluded the planned pyelovesicostomy. A successful open vesicocalicostomy was performed, anastomosing a bladder flap to a lower pole calix. The patient remains recurrence free after 6 months of follow-up

Stabilization of premixed combustors

In order to attain a sufficiently good insight into the fluid mechanical processes taking place in combustors operating on premixed, prevaporized, and preheated gases, an experimental facility was developed where the flow field is tractable both experimentally and analytically. The configuration adopted for the initial stage of the study is based on the use of a step to stabilized the combustion zone. The primary purpose of the experimental apparatus is to provide a facility for studying the effects of the elementary fluid mechanical processes on the stability of a model combustion system in order to further the understanding of the intrinsic mechanism of nonsteady phenomena, rather than to provide criteria for unstable operation of combustors, as expressed by overall performance parameters, such as the blowout and flashback limits

In vivo transcriptional profiling of Plasmodium falciparum

BACKGROUND: Both host and pathogen factors contribute to disease outcome in Plasmodium falciparum infection. The feasibility of studying the P. falciparum in vivo transcriptome to understand parasite transcriptional response while it resides in the human host is presented. METHODS: A custom made oligonucleotide array with probes based on the P. falciparum 3D7 laboratory strain chromosome 2 sequence was used to detect in vivo P. falciparum transcripts. This study analyzed transcripts from total RNA derived from small blood samples of P. falciparum infected patients and compared the in vivo expression profile to the in vitro cultivated 3D7 strain transcriptome. RESULTS: The data demonstrated that in vivo transcription can be studied from a small blood sample, despite the abundance of human RNA. The in vivo transcriptome is similar to the 3D7 ring stage transcriptome, but there are significant differences in genes encoding a sexual stage antigen and surface proteins. CONCLUSIONS: Whole genome transcription analysis of P. falciparum can be carried out successfully and further studies in selected patient cohorts may provide insight into parasite in vivo biology and defense against host immunity

Multiple Organ Transplantation after Suicide by Acetaminophen and Gunshot Wound

Emergency physicians (EP) and medical toxicologists are integral in identifying and treating patients with overdoses. Transplant centers are expanding acceptance criteria to consider those with poison-related deaths. We present a case of a simultaneous gunshot wound to the head and an acetaminophen overdose. This case highlights the importance of EPs and medical toxicologists in recognizing the medical complexity of suicides, optimizing treatment, and timing of organ procurement. Early antidote administration and aggressive supportive care allowed the patient to be evaluated as a potential donor. EPs and medical toxicologists have integral roles in overdose patients as organ donors

Entry in the ADHD drugs market: Welfare impact of generics and me-toos

Recent decades have seen a growth in treatments for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) including many branded and generic drugs. In the early 2000's, new drug entry dramatically altered market shares. We estimate a demand system for ADHD drugs and assess the welfare impact of new drugs. We find that entry induced large welfare gains by reducing prices of substitute drugs, and by providing alternative delivery mechanisms for existing molecules. Our results suggest that the success of follow-on patented drugs may come from unanticipated innovations like delivery mechanisms, a factor ignored by proposals to retard new follow-on drug approvals

Citizens and Condemnation: Strategic Uses of International Human Rights Pressure in Authoritarian States

Governments with strict control over the information that their citizens hear from foreign sources are regular targets of human rights pressure, but we know little about how this information matters in the domestic realm. I argue that authoritarian regimes strategically pass on certain types of external pressure to their public to “internationalize” human rights violations, making citizens view human rights in terms of defending their nation internationally rather than in terms of individual violations, and making them more likely to be satisfied with their government’s behavior. I find strong support for this model through statistical analysis of Chinese state media reports of external human rights pressure and a survey experiment on Chinese citizens’ responses to pressure on women’s rights. This analysis demonstrates that authoritarian regimes may be able to manipulate international human rights diplomacy to help them retain the support of their population while suppressing their human rights
