Evolutionary Approaches to Optimization Problems in Chimera Topologies
Chimera graphs define the topology of one of the first commercially available
quantum computers. A variety of optimization problems have been mapped to this
topology to evaluate the behavior of quantum enhanced optimization heuristics
in relation to other optimizers, being able to efficiently solve problems
classically to use them as benchmarks for quantum machines. In this paper we
investigate for the first time the use of Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) on
Ising spin glass instances defined on the Chimera topology. Three genetic
algorithms (GAs) and three estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs) are
evaluated over hard instances of the Ising spin glass constructed from
Sidon sets. We focus on determining whether the information about the topology
of the graph can be used to improve the results of EAs and on identifying the
characteristics of the Ising instances that influence the success rate of GAs

Exactly solvable charged dilaton gravity theories in two dimensions
We find exactly solvable dilaton gravity theories containing a U(1) gauge
field in two dimensional space-time. The classical general solutions for the
gravity sector (the metric plus the dilaton field) of the theories coupled to a
massless complex scalar field are obtained in terms of the stress-energy tensor
and the U(1) current of the scalar field. We discuss issues that arise when we

Choice of steel material for bridge bearings to avoid brittle fracture
Bridge bearings need verification against brittle failure at low temperatures. The design of bearings according to EN 1337 may lead to structural components with thicknesses no longer covered in the relevant technical construction regulations. Due to its specific geometry, the loading and stressing and the fabrication process the prerequisites for using the rules in EN 1993 1 10 lead to conservative restrictions or uneconomical choice of steel material. For an economical bearing design further modifications of the existing rules are necessary. This report adapts the fracture mechanical approach used in EN 1993 1 10 and gives information for a “safe-sided” choice of steel material for bearings. The main modifications refer to the hypothetical design crack scenario and the definition of the “nominal design stress” at the geometric “hot-spot”. Suspension platform interferometer for the AEI 10\,m prototype: concept, design and optical layout
At present a 10\,m prototype interferometer facility is being set up at the
AEI Hannover. One unique feature of the prototype will be the suspension
platform interferometer (SPI). The purpose of the SPI is to monitor and
stabilise the relative motion between three seismically isolated optical
tables. The in-vacuum tables are suspended in an L-shaped configuration with an
arm length of 11.65\,m. The design goal of the SPI is to stabilise longitudinal
differential displacements to a level of 100\,pm/ between
10\,mHz and 100\,Hz and relative angular noise of 10\,nrad/
in the same frequency band. This paper covers the design aspects of the SPI,
e.g. cross-coupling between the different degrees of freedom and fibre pointing
noise are investigated. A simulation is presented which shows that with the
chosen optical design of the SPI all degrees of table motion can be sensed in a
fully decoupled way. Furthermore, a proof of principle test of the SPI sensing

Cluster Analysis of Thermal Icequakes Using the Seismometer to Investigate Ice and Ocean Structure (SIIOS): Implications for Ocean World Seismology
Ocean Worlds are of high interest to the planetary community due to the potential habitability of their subsurface oceans. Over the next few decades several missions will be sent to ocean worlds including the Europa Clipper, Dragonfly, and possibly a Europa lander. The Dragonfly and Europa lander missions will carry seismic payloads tasked with detecting and locating seismic sources. The Seismometer to Investigate Ice and Ocean Structure (SIIOS) is a NASA PSTAR funded project that investigates ocean world seismology using terrestrial analogs. The goals of the SIIOS experiment include quantitatively comparing flight-candidate seismometers to traditional instruments, comparing single-station approaches to a small-aperture array, and characterizing the local seismic environment of our field sites. Here we present an analysis of detected local events at our field sites at Gulkana Glacier in Alaska and in Northwest Greenland approximately 80 km North of Qaanaaq, Greenland. Both field sites passively recorded data for about two weeks. We deployed our experiment on Gulkana Glacier in September 2017 and in Greenland in June 2018. At Gulkana there was a nearby USGS weather station which recorded wind data. Temperature data was collected using the MERRA satellite. In Greenland we deployed our own weather station to collect temperature and wind data. Gulkana represents a noisier and more active environment. Temperatures fluctuated around 0C, allowing for surface runoff to occur during the day. The glacier had several moulins, and during deployment we heard several rockfalls from nearby mountains. In addition to the local environment, Gulkana is located close to an active plate boundary (relative to Greenland). This meant that there were more regional events recorded over two weeks, than in Greenland. Greenlands local environment was also quieter, and less active. Temperatures remained below freezing. The Greenland ice was much thicker than Gulkana (~850 m versus ~100 m) and our stations were above a subglacial lake. Both conditions can reduce event detections from basal motion. Lastly, we encased our Greenland array in an aluminum vault and buried it beneath the surface unlike our array in Gulkana where the instruments were at the surface and covered with plastic bins. The vault further insulated the array from thermal and atmospheric events
Life-long course and molecular characterization of the original Dutch family with epidermolysis bullosa simplex with muscular dystrophy due to a homozygous novel plectin point mutation
Plectin is one of the largest and most versatile cytolinker proteins known. Cloned and sequenced in 1991, it was later shown to have nonsense mutations in recessive epidermolysis bullosa with muscular dystrophy. A dominant mutation in the gene was found to cause epidermolysis bullosa simplex Ogna without muscular dystrophy. Here we report the DNA sequencing of the plectin gene (PLEC1) in a Dutch family originally described in 1972 as having epidermolysis bullosa with muscular dystrophy. The results revealed homozygosity for a new plectin nonsense mutation at position 13187 and its specific 8q24 marker haplotype profile. Western blotting of cultured fibroblasts and immunofluorescence microscopy of skin biopsy confirm that the plectin protein expression is grossly reduced or absent. A summary of the life-long clinical course of the two affected brothers homozygous for the new E1914X mutation is given

HITRAP: A facility at GSI for highly charged ions
An overview and status report of the new trapping facility for highly charged
ions at the Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung is presented. The
construction of this facility started in 2005 and is expected to be completed
in 2008. Once operational, highly charged ions will be loaded from the
experimental storage ring ESR into the HITRAP facility, where they are
decelerated and cooled. The kinetic energy of the initially fast ions is
reduced by more than fourteen orders of magnitude and their thermal energy is
cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The cold ions are then delivered to a broad

Magnetically charged solutions via an analog of the electric-magnetic duality in (2+1)-dimensional gravity theories
We find an analog of the electric-magnetic duality, which is a
transformation between magnetic and electric sectors of the static and
rotationally symmetric solutions in a class of (2+1)-dimensional
Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity theories. The theories in our consideration
include, in particular, one parameter class of theories continuously connecting
the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) gravity and the low energy string
effective theory. When there is no charge, we have or
symmetry, depending on a parameter that specifies each theory. Via the
transformation, we obtain exact magnetically charged solutions from the known
electrically charged solutions. We explain the relationship between the
transformation and symmetry, and comment on the -duality of the
