    Midwater fish data report for warm-core Gulf Stream rings cruises 1981-1982

    This data report is for midwater fishes collected during the multidisciplinary Warm-Core Rings Program in 1981 and 1982. Stations were made in and near three warm-core rings on five cruises within a period of 14 months. On Atlantis II cruise 110 (September-October 1981) six stations were made in and around ring 81-D (age two months). Stations were made in the vicinity of ring 82-B on three cruises in 1982--twelve stations during Oceanus 118 (April) when the ring was two months old, 15 stations during Oceanus 121 (June) at age four months, and 19 stations during Oceanus 125 (August) at age 5.5 months. Finally, twelve stations were made in and near meander/ring 82-H (age 0) during Knorr 98 in September/October 1982 (Tables 1-10). The collections were made with a new midwater trawl - the MOCNESS-20 (MOC-20) (Wiebe et al., 1985), a scaled-up version of the MOCNESS-1 (an apparatus for collecting zooplankton; Wiebe et al., 1976) and successor to the MOCNESS-10 (like the MOC-20, a midwater trawl). (The number forming the distinctive part of the name of these nets is equal to the area of the projected mouth in square meters when the apparatus is in a common fishing attitude.) The MOC-20 consists of a set of 3-mm mesh rectangular nets that can be opened and closed by command from the surface via a signal-conducting towing warp. Apparatus attached to the net frame measures and transmits depth, temperature, conductivity, flow, and net-frame angle to the towing ship's laboratory. Flow (net speed), vertical velocity, and net-frame angle allow computation of the water volume filtered . On the WCR cruises a set of five or six nets was used. One net (not used for quantitative analyses) was fished down to 1000 m, then closed and a second net opened. The second and successive nets were closed and opened sequentially at intervals as the apparatus was brought back to the surface. A surface-to-surface cycle with the gear is referred to as a station, the contents of a single net as a collection. In addition to be1ng described by latitude and longitude, stat1ons are located in the same radial coordinate system used to composite the warm-core rings physical data, that is, by distance and bearing from the moving ring center.Funding was provided by the National Scten.ce Foundation under Grant Numbers OCE 80-17270 and OCE 86-20402

    Numbers of calling whales in the North Pacific

    Since November 1995, the U. S. Navy's Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS) and other hydrophone arrays were used to regularly sample the occurance of whale sounds in the four regions bordering the continental margins across the North Pacific. The numbers of whales heard calling varied with the season and location for each species, Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculas), fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus), and humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). For blue whales, calling during the fall season averaged 5 whales per event, winter averaged 1.5 whales per event, spring averaged 1 whale, and summer averaged 1.5 whales. For fin whales the number of whales heard ("F" calls from individuals) during winter averaged 3 whales per event, spring and fall calling averaged 1.5 whales, and summer averaged 1 whale. The "J" calling events, regardless of season, were judged to be from at least 6 fin whales. Humpback singing typically was from 3 whales.     Complete Resolution of a Large Bicuspid Aortic Valve Thrombus with Anticoagulation in Primary Antiphospholipid Syndrome

    Native aortic valve thrombosis in primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APLS) is a rare entity. We describe a 38-year-old man who presented with neurological symptoms and a cardiac murmur. Transthoracic echocardiography detected a large bicuspid aortic valve thrombus. Laboratory evaluation showed the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies. Anticoagulation was started, and serial echocardiographic studies showed complete resolution of the aortic valve vegetation after 4 months. The patient improved clinically and had no residual symptoms. This report and review of the literature suggests that vegetations in APLS can be treated successfully with conservative treatment, regardless of their size

    Mild guanidinoacetate increase under partial guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency strongly affects brain cell development.

    Among cerebral creatine deficiency syndromes, guanidinoacetate methyltransferase (GAMT) deficiency can present the most severe symptoms, and is characterized by neurocognitive dysfunction due to creatine deficiency and accumulation of guanidinoacetate in the brain. So far, every patient was found with negligible GAMT activity. However, GAMT deficiency is thought under-diagnosed, in particular due to unforeseen mutations allowing sufficient residual activity avoiding creatine deficiency, but enough guanidinoacetate accumulation to be toxic. With poorly known GAA-specific neuropathological mechanisms, we developed an RNAi-induced partial GAMT deficiency in organotypic rat brain cell cultures. As expected, the 85% decrease of GAMT protein was insufficient to cause creatine deficiency, but generated guanidinoacetate accumulation causing axonal hypersprouting and decrease in natural apoptosis, followed by induction of non-apoptotic cell death. Specific guanidinoacetate-induced effects were completely prevented by creatine co-treatment. We show that guanidinoacetate accumulation without creatine deficiency is sufficient to affect CNS development, and suggest that additional partial GAMT deficiencies, which may not show the classical brain creatine deficiency, may be discovered through guanidinoacetate measurement

    Distribution of calling blue, fin, and humpback whales in the North Pacific

    May also be cited as: WHOI-00-12The seasonal distribution of calling ble whales (Balaenoptera musculus), fin whales (B. physalus), and singing humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) has been analyzed from acoustic data recorded by the U.S. Navy Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS) and other hydrophone arrays in the North Pacific. The data from ten arrays were selected as representative of four Regions along the continental margins, labeled Northwest (NW), NorthCentral (NC), Northeast (NE), and Southeast (SE). The call data indicate that there is a substantial population of blue whales scattered over the North Pacific and concentrated during the Fall season in the NW and NC Regions. Blue whale calls are recorded in all seasons, particularly in these NW and NC Regions. Fin whales are found in groups but also in relatively large numbers in all Regions, with most calling in the Winter season and in the NC Region, while calling is absent in most Regions during Summer. Fin whale calling includes "F" calls from individuals heard in all seasons and "J" calls from too many whales to separate, particularly prominent in the winter reproductive season. As vias de comunicação fisiológica entre a polpa e o periodonto são representadas pelos túbulos dentinários, canais laterais/acessórios e forame apical. A reciprocidade de bactérias e seus subprodutos entre esses tecidos é conhecida e difundida, principalmente quando o tecido pulpar se encontra necrosado. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre a etiologia, classificação, diagnóstico e tratamento das lesões endoperio, bem como relatar casos clínicos da literatura em que a conduta do profissional é específica, frente ao diagnóstico de polpa necrosada em lesões combinadas. Alguns casos clínicos foram selecionados, através da plataforma científica Pubmed, Google Acadêmico e Scielo nas línguas inglês e português, para avaliação do tratamento realizado e prognóstico alcançado nos pacientes que se enquadravam no tema da pesquisa, com lesões combinadas. O teste de sensibilidade pulpar e a avaliação periodontal são de fundamental importância para o delineamento e implementação de um correto plano de tratamento. Na lesão Endoperio, nos casos em que há necrose do tecido pulpar, o tratamento endodôntico e o uso de uma medicação intracanal são importantes para auxiliar na inserção periodontal.Endoperio lesions are still much discussed in the literature. The physiological communication pathways between the pulp and the periodontium are represented by the dentinal tubules, lateral/accessory canals and the apical foramen. The reciprocity of bacteria and their by-products between these tissues is known and widespread, especially when the pulp tissue is necrotic. The present work aimed to carry out a literature review on the etiology, classification, diagnosis and treatment of endoperium lesions, as well as to report clinical cases in the literature in which the professional's conduct is specific, regarding the diagnosis of necrotic pulp in combined lesions. Some clinical cases were selected, through the scientific platforms Pubmed, Academic Google and Scielo, in languages English and Portuguese, to evaluate the treatment performed and prognosis achieved in patients who fit the research theme, with combined injuries. The pulp sensitivity test and periodontal evaluation are of fundamental importance for the design and implementation of a correct treatment plan. In the Endoperio lesion, in cases where there is necrosis of the pulp tissue, endodontic treatment and the use of an intracanal medication are important to aid in periodontal insertion

    Blended learning in undergraduate dental education: a global pilot study.

    AIMS: To explore the global trends in blended learning in undergraduate dental education during the COVID pandemic and during the recovery phase by engaging with the students and faculty and evaluate the implications for dental education in the post-COVID era. METHODS: It was a pilot cross-sectional study which employed a convenience sampling technique to recruit representatives of dental faculty and undergraduate students in 80 dental institutions globally. A previously validated questionnaire consisting of a combination of closed and open-ended items was used for data collection. Responses to these online questionnaires were processed and analysed using the R statistical computing environment. RESULTS: A total of 320 dental students and 169 faculty members from 47 different dental institutions participated in the study. Video and Live Online Tutorials were considered to be the most effective method of online learning followed by online question banks by both groups. Significant differences were noted between faculty and students regarding time spent and effectiveness of online teaching and learning, respectively, both before and after the start of COVID. The results highlight the faculty need to engage more closely with the students to address their learning needs. Finally, the participants provided several recommendations regarding the future development of teaching and learning strategies as well as assessments in the post-pandemic era. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study which explores blended learning in dental education with participants from multiple institutions in different regions of the globe. Compared to the faculty, students considered online learning to be less interactive and preferred learning activities and all assessments to be delivered face-to-face. The results underscore the need to adapt teaching practices to suit the learning needs of the students

    Biplot analysis of strawberry genotypes recommended for the State of Espírito Santo.

    Most strawberry genotypes grown commercially in Brazil originate from breeding programs in the United States, and are therefore not adapted to the various soil and climatic conditions found in Brazil. Thus, quantifying the magnitude of genotype x environment (GE) interactions serves as a primary means for increasing average Brazilian strawberry yields, and helps provide specific recommendations for farmers on which genotypes meet high yield and phenotypic stability thresholds. The aim of this study was to use AMMI (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) and GGE biplot (genotype main effects + genotype x environment interaction) analyses to identify high-yield, stable strawberry genotypes grown at three locations in Espírito Santo for two agricultural years. We evaluated seven strawberry genotypes (Dover, Camino Real, Ventana, Camarosa, Seascape, Diamante, and Aromas) at three locations (Domingos Martins, Iúna, and Muniz Freire) in agricultural years 2006 and 2007, totaling six study environments. Joint analysis of variance was calculated using yield data (t/ha), and AMMI and GGE biplot analysis was conducted following the detection of a significant genotypes x agricultural years x locations (G x A x L) interaction. During the two agricultural years, evaluated locations were allocated to different regions on biplot graphics using both methods, indicating distinctions among them. Based on the results obtained from the two methods used in this study to investigate the G x A x L interaction, we recommend growing the Camarosa genotype for production at the three locations assessed due to the high frequency of favorable alleles, which were expressed in all localities evaluated regardless of the agricultural year

    Ttc7a regulates hematopoietic stem cell functions while controlling the stress-induced response

    The molecular machinery that regulates the balance between self-renewal and differentiation properties of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) has yet to be characterized in detail. Here we found that the tetratricopeptide repeat domain 7 A (Ttc7a) protein, a putative scaffold protein expressed by HSC, acts as an intrinsic regulator of the proliferative response and the self-renewal potential of murine HSC in vivo. Loss of Ttc7a consistently enhanced the competitive repopulating ability of HSC and their intrinsic capacity to replenish the hematopoietic system after serial cell transplantations, relative to wildtype cells. Ttc7a-deficient HSC exhibit a different transcriptomic profile for a set of genes controlling the cellular response to stress, which was associated with increased proliferation in response to chemically induced stress in vitro and myeloablative stress in vivo. Our results therefore revealed a previously unrecognized role of Ttc7a as a critical regulator of HSC stemness. This role is related, at least in part, to regulation of the endoplasmic reticulum stress response.</p
