Response Of Hybridized (mixed Valence) Systems To External Probes

    Get PDF
The problem of the response of a hybridized system to an external probe is discussed from a completely quantum-mechanical point of view. An exactly soluble model, which describes qualitatively the mixed-valence states of rare-earth compound solids, is presented. We show that it is possible to obtain regimes of "single response"-e.g., isomer shifts-as well as regimes of "two responses"-e.g., photoelectron emission spectra. The calculation does not involve real time fluctuations. We point out that it would be worthwhile to investigate experimentally intermediate regimes where the characteristic energy of the probe is comparable to the energy separation of the hybridized states. © The American Physical Society.1393948395

Magnetic And Magnetocaloric Properties On The U1-y Ry Ga2 (r=er And Dy) Compound

The magnetic, calorimetric, and magnetocaloric properties of the pseudobinary U1-y Ry Ga2 (R=Er and Dy) series were studied to determine its potential as a candidate for use in cryogenic magnetic refrigeration. The partial substitution of Dy and Er for U provides a wide range of the ordering temperature and increases the saturation magnetic moment. The results for U1-y Dyy Ga2 with 0.6<y<0.9 show evidences of a spin-glass-like (SG) behavior, possibly as a consequence of competing anisotropy and exchange interactions within a frustrated hexagonal spin lattice. The isothermal magnetic entropy change (Δ Smag) observed for U Ga2 shows a well defined peak centered on TC, which is gradually broadened and shifted to lower temperatures as the Er and Dy content increases. For low concentrations (0.2≤y≤0.4) a tablelike profile is observed in the Δ Smag curve. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.1037Gschneidner Jr., K.A., Pecharsky, V.K., Tsokol, A.O., (2005) Radiat. The northern region of Piauí state is an important center of irrigated organic fruit farming, wherein sandy soils with low organic matter content are predominant, besides climate with high temperatures, long periods of water deficit and constant wind. Given this situation, it becomes necessary to investigate alternative management options able to meet the challenges of agricultural productivity. In this context, green manuring becomes an important practice, mainly when using fast-growing species and with great potential for biomass production. Thus, a study was carried out at Embrapa Meio-Norte to measure Crotalaria juncea biomass yield after thinning and at various sowing densities. The evaluated parameters were plant height, stem diameter, number of branches per plant, fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots. The results showed that sowing density had no influence on plant height; however, unthinned plants reached greater heights, which might have been due to reduced competition for light. Thinning had no effect on diameters of plant stem base; on the other hand, lower planting densities promoted larger diameters also due to less competition. Likewise, the number of branches per plant was not affected by thinning, being greater at lower planting densities on account of less competition. Thinned plants achieved higher averages of fresh shoot weight. Nevertheless, shoot dry biomass was greater at higher planting densities. Furthermore, both fresh and dry weight of roots were not influenced by any of the adopted treatments. © 2016, Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Arid. All rights reserved.29487888

Body Education And School Hygiene In Rio De Janeiro Press (1930 - 1939)

In the 1930s in Rio de Janeiro, there was an effective presence of intellectuals in government positions, which could ensure the implementation of a number of strategies aimed at the construction of a wider reform of a society guided by modernity, which lay in the reform of habits, such as hygiene and body education. Rio de Janeiro was the administrative center of the republic, so there was a need for coordinating government policy on education and health, especially in that city. This study has aimed to evaluate the influence and impact of hygienist strategies on the daily life of schools. Its sources were mainly O Paiz and Jornal do Brazil newspapers in the 1930s. The document corpus consisted of 37 newspaper articles, of which 21 were analyzed in this research, because they involved the following specific categories: school medicine, school hygiene and health education. The hypothesis pointed to the limited influence of intellectuals, with a gap between what was thought and what was executed. However, findings allow us to consider approaching the educational discourses and practices influenced by the actual participation of intellectuals such as Fernando de Azevedo and Anísio Teixeira in the organization of education in Rio de Janeiro, particularly in the early 1930s.42241142

Spin Waves In Dilute Ferromagnets: Cluster-bethe-lattice Approach

    Get PDF
A calculation of the local density of spin-wave states in a dilute ferromagnet is presented. It is based on a Green's-function formulation solved within the cluster-Bethe-lattice approximation. The method is compared with an exact solution for the one-dimensional dilute ferromagnet. We also study clusters of nine atoms in the bcc structure, and clusters of 7, 19, and 27 atoms in the simple-cubic structure. Our study shows: (i) a stability condition for ferromagnetism in agreement with percolation theory; (ii) a local structure dependence of the spin-wave structure; (iii) the existence of localized spin-wave states due to both isolated magnetic clusters and nonpropagating magnon modes. © 1976 The American Physical Society.1431314132

Magnetocaloric Effect And Evidence Of Superparamagnetism In Gda L2 Nanocrystallites: A Magnetic-structural Correlation

    Get PDF
The correlation between structural and magnetic properties of GdAl2, focusing on the role played by the disorder in magnetic ordering and how it influences the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) are discussed. Micrometric-sized particles, consisting of nanocrystallites embedded in an amorphous matrix, were prepared by a mechanical milling technique and characterized by means of x-ray diffraction, scanning and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy as well as magnetic measurements as a function of an applied external magnetic field and temperature. The results show that the average particle size is just slightly diminished (≈7%) with the milling time (between 3 and 13 h), whereas the average crystallite size undergoes an expressive reduction (≈43%). For long milling times, structural disorders mostly associated with crystallite size singularly affect the magnetic properties, leading to a large tablelike MCE in the temperature range between 30 and 165 K. Below 30 K, nanocrystallites with dimensions below a given critical size cause an enhancement in the magnetic entropy change related to superparamagnetic behavior. In contrast, for low milling times, relative cooling power values are improved. These striking features along with the small magnetic hysteresis observed make the milled GdAl2 a promising material for application in the magnetic refrigeration technology. Finally, a discussion in an attempt to elucidate the origin of the spin-glass states previously reported in the literature for mechanically milled GdAl2 samples for very long times (400 and 1000 h) is presented. © 2016 American Physical Society.93

Abscesso tuberculoso cerebral em paciente com AIDS: relato de caso e revisão da literatura

    Get PDF
Tuberculous brain abscesses in AIDS patients are considered rare with only eight cases reported in the literature. We describe the case of a 34-year-old woman with AIDS and previous toxoplasmic encephalitis who was admitted due to headache and seizures. A brain computed tomography scan disclosed a frontal hypodense lesion with a contrast ring enhancement. Brain abscess was suspected and she underwent a lesion puncture through a trepanation. The material extracted was purulent and the acid-fast smear was markedly positive. Timely medical and surgical approaches allowed a good outcome. Tuberculous abscesses should be considered in the differential diagnosis of focal brain lesions in AIDS patients. Surgical excision or stereotactic aspiration, and antituberculous treatment are the mainstay in the management of these uncommon lesions.
