    Physicochemical and microbiological meat quality, growth performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot-finished cull Santa Inês ewes and Moxotó goats

    This study aimed at assessing the physicochemical and microbiological quality of feedlot-finished, culled Santa Inês ewes and Moxotó goats, and compares the intake, weight gain and carcass characteristics. Three Santa Inês ewes and Moxotó goats with similar ages were confined in double and/or individual pens and then euthanized after 40 days of confinement. The average intake, daily weight gain, hot carcass yield, cold carcass yield, weight loss by cooling and rib eye area (94.45%, 0.220 kg/day, 41.37%, 40.14%, 2.99%, 16.1 cm², respectively) of the Santa Inês ewes were higher than that of the Moxotó goats (84.01%; 0.06 kg/day; 41.55%; 39.81%; 4.12%; and 11.35 cm², respectively). The chevon (goat meat) showed higher protein levels (23.09 g/100 g), lower lipid levels (1.43 g/100 g) and higher red-color intensity (11.62), although it had lower tenderness (8.98 kgf shear strength). The superiority of the culled ewes was assessed relative to that of the culled goats, and the results showed that the Santa Inês sheep has better performance than the Moxotó goats. However, mutton and chevon derived from the culled animals are promising alternatives for small farmers because culled meats add value to the standard meat obtained from these animals, broaden sales alternatives and increase profitability.Key words: Performance parameters, physicochemical parameters, microbiological parameters, cull animals

    Quantification of respiratory parameters in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy

    Dysfunction affecting cardiac or pulmonary systems has been postulated as a major factor in sudden death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Whilst the majority of studies of cardiorespiratory function have focused on changes during seizures, here we investigate whether epilepsy influences basal respiratory parameters in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) during the interictal period. Spirometry was performed in 10 females and 10 males. Measurements of Vital Capacity (VC), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (FEV1) and ratios of FEV1 to FVC (FEV1/FVC) were obtained, and these values were analyzed as percentages of predicted values. None of the patients had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and no significant alterations in respiratory function tests were found among these patients. No association between seizure frequency, antiepileptic drugs and SUDEP could be found in this study. Although the study did not identify any specific respiratory abnormality in TLE patients during the interictal period, re-evaluation of clinical data on pulmonary disorders in people with epilepsy should be better investigated

    Presubiculum stimulation in vivo evokes distinct oscillations in superficial and deep entorhinal cortex layers in chronic epileptic rats

    The characteristic cell loss in layer III of the medial entorhinal area (MEA-III) in human mesial temporal lobe epilepsy is reproduced in the rat kainate model of the disease. To understand how this cell loss affects the functional properties of the MEA, we investigated whether projections from the presubiculum (prS), providing a main input to the MEA-III, are altered in this epileptic rat model. Injections of an anterograde tracer in the prS revealed bilateral projection fibers mainly to the MEA-III in both control and chronic epileptic rats. We further examined the prS-MEA circuitry using a 16-channel electrode probe covering the MEA in anesthetized control and chronic epileptic rats. With a second 16-channel probe, we recorded signals in the hippocampus. Current source density analysis indicated that, after prS double-pulse stimulation, afterdischarges in the form of oscillations (20-45 Hz) occurred that were confined to the superficial layers of the MEA in all epileptic rats displaying MEA-III neuronal loss. Slower oscillations (theta range) were occasionally observed in the deep MEA layers and the dentate gyrus. This kind of oscillation was never observed in control rats. We conclude that dynamical changes occur in an extensive network within the temporal lobe in epileptic rats, manifested as different kinds of oscillations, the characteristics of which depend on local properties of particular subareas. These findings emphasize the significance of the entorhinal cortex in temporal lobe epilepsy and suggest that the superficial cell layers could play an important role in distributing oscillatory activity.status: publishe

    The Role of Sarcopenic Obesity in Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease: A Synthesis of the Evidence on Pathophysiological Aspects and Clinical Implications

    Obesity is globally a serious public health concern and is associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and various types of cancers. It is important to evaluate various types of obesity, such as visceral and sarcopenic obesity. The evidence on the associated risk of CVD, cancer and sarcopenic obesity, including pathophysiological aspects, occurrence, clinical implications and survival, needs further investigation. Sarcopenic obesity is a relatively new term. It is a clinical condition that primarily affects older adults. There are several endocrine-hormonal, metabolic and lifestyle aspects involved in the occurrence of sarcopenic obesity that affect pathophysiological aspects that, in turn, contribute to CVD and neoplasms. However, there is no available evidence on the role of sarcopenic obesity in the occurrence of CVD and cancer and its pathophysiological interplay. Therefore, this review aims to describe the pathophysiological aspects and the clinical and epidemiological evidence on the role of sarcopenic obesity related to the occurrence and mortality risk of various types of cancer and cardiovascular disease. This literature review highlights the need for further research on sarcopenic obesity to demonstrate the interrelation of these various associations

    In this work we analyze the relation between the interface microroughness and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra for a GaAs/Ga0.7Al0.3As multiple quantum well (QW) system. We show that, in spite of the complex correlation between the microscopic interface-defects parameters and the QW optical properties, the Singh and Bajaj model [Appl. Phys.     The Analyticity of a Generalized Ruelle's Operator

    In this work we propose a generalization of the concept of Ruelle operator for one dimensional lattices used in thermodynamic formalism and ergodic optimization, which we call generalized Ruelle operator, that generalizes both the Ruelle operator proposed in [BCLMS] and the Perron Frobenius operator defined in [Bowen]. We suppose the alphabet is given by a compact metric space, and consider a general a-priori measure to define the operator. We also consider the case where the set of symbols that can follow a given symbol of the alphabet depends on such symbol, which is an extension of the original concept of transition matrices from the theory of subshifts of finite type. We prove the analyticity of the Ruelle operator and present some examples

    Energetics of the N-O bonds in 2-hydroxyphenazine-di-N-oxide

    The standard enthalpy of formation and the enthalpy of sublimation of crystalline 2-hydroxyphenazine-diN-oxide, at T = 298.15 K, were determined from isoperibol static bomb combustion calorimetry and from Knudsen effusion experiments, as -76.7 +/- 4.2 kJ center dot mol(-1) and 197 5 kJ center dot mol(-1), respectively. The sum of these two quantities gives the standard enthalpy of formation in the gas-phase for this compound, Delta(f)H(m)degrees(g) = 120 6 KJ center dot mol(-1). This value was combined with the gas-phase standard enthalpy of formation for 2-hydroxyphenazine retrieved from a group estimative method yielding the mean (N-O) bond dissociation enthalpy, in the gas-phase, for 2-hydroxyphenazine-di-N-oxide. The result obtained with this strategy is = 263 +/- 4 KJ center dot mol(-1), which is in excellent agreement with the B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,2p)// B3LYP/6-31G(d) computed value, 265 KJ center dot mol(-1)

    Influence of the temperature on the carrier capture into self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots

    Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and atomic-force microscopy (AFM) were used to investigate the size evolution of InAs quantum dots on GaAs(001) as a function of the amount of InAs material. Different families of islands were observed in the AFM images and unambiguously identified in the PL spectra, together with the signal of the wetting layer. PL measurements carried out at low and intermediate temperatures showed a thermal carrier redistribution among dots belonging to different families. The physical origin of this behavior is explained in terms of the different temperature dependence of the carrier-capture rate into the quantum dots. At high temperatures, an enhancement of the total PL-integrated intensity of the largest-sized quantum dots was attributed to the increase of diffusivity of the photogenerated carriers inside the wetting layer.     Modelling of the pH effect on the biosorption of heavy metals by marine algae Sargassum filipendula. In this paper the biosorption of metal ions Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and Zn(2+) in single-component system by Sargassum filipendula pre-treated with 0.5 M CaCl(2) was studied. The experiments were carried out in a batch reactor at different fixed pH (3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0) and 30 degrees C. All the equilibrium data obtained were described using two pH-dependent isotherm models, based on the Langmuir isotherm. Artificial neural networks was also used to represent the pH effect on the biosorption equilibrium. The input of the networks were the equilibrium concentration of the metal in the fluid phase and the pH. As output the concentration of the metallic specie in the biosorbent was used. The results showed that the modeling using artificial neural networks technique represented the equilibrium data much better than the conventional modeling by the pH-dependent isotherm models.33443944
