Second fundamental form of the Prym map in the ramified case
In this paper we study the second fundamental form of the Prym map  in the ramified case .
We give an expression of it in terms of the second fundamental form of the
Torelli map of the covering curves. We use this expression to give an upper
bound for the dimension of a germ of a totally geodesic submanifold, and hence
of a Shimura subvariety of , contained in the

New Massive Gravity Domain Walls
The properties of the asymptotic  space-times representing flat domain
walls (DW's) solutions of the New Massive 3D Gravity with scalar matter are
studied. Our analysis is based on  order BPS-like equations involving
an appropriate superpotential. The Brown-York boundary stress-tensor is used
for the calculation of DW's tensions as well as of the 's central
charges. The holographic renormalization group flows and the phase transitions
in specific deformed  dual to 3D massive gravity model with quadratic

Impact of metabolic comorbidity on the association between body mass index and heatlh-related quality of life: a Scotland-wide cross-sectional study of 5,608 participants
<p/>Background: The prevalence of obesity is rising in Scotland and globally. Overall, obesity is associated with increased morbidity, mortality and reduced health-related quality of life. Studies suggest that "healthy obesity" (obesity without metabolic comorbidity) may not be associated with morbidity or mortality. Its impact on health-related quality of life is unknown.
<p/>Methods: We extracted data from the Scottish Health Survey on self-reported health-related quality of life, body mass index (BMI), demographic information and comorbidity. SF-12 responses were converted into an overall health utility score. Linear regression analyses were used to explore the association between BMI and health utility, stratified by the presence or absence of metabolic comorbidity (diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia or cardiovascular disease), and adjusted for potential confounders (age, sex and deprivation quintile).
<p/>Results: Of the 5,608 individuals, 3,744 (66.8%) were either overweight or obese and 921 (16.4%) had metabolic comorbidity. There was an inverted U-shaped relationship whereby health utility was highest among overweight individuals and fell with increasing BMI. There was a significant interaction with metabolic comorbidity (p = 0.007). Individuals with metabolic comorbidty had lower utility scores and a steeper decline in utility with increasing BMI (morbidly obese, adjusted coefficient: -0.064, 95% CI -0.115, -0.012, p = 0.015 for metabolic comorbidity versus -0.042, 95% CI -0.067, -0.018, p = 0.001 for no metabolic comorbidity).
<p/>Conclusions: The adverse impact of obesity on health-related quality of life is greater among individuals with metabolic comorbidity. However, increased BMI is associated with reduced health-related quality of life even in the absence of metabolic comorbidity, casting doubt on the notion of "healthy obesity"
Topologically protected quantum bits from Josephson junction arrays
All physical implementations of quantum bits (qubits), carrying the
information and computation in a putative quantum computer, have to meet the
conflicting requirements of environmental decoupling while remaining
manipulable through designed external signals. Proposals based on quantum
optics naturally emphasize the aspect of optimal isolation, while those
following the solid state route exploit the variability and scalability of
modern nanoscale fabrication techniques. Recently, various designs using
superconducting structures have been successfully tested for quantum coherent
operation, however, the ultimate goal of reaching coherent evolution over
thousands of elementary operations remains a formidable task. Protecting qubits
from decoherence by exploiting topological stability, a qualitatively new
proposal due to Kitaev, holds the promise for long decoherence times, but its
practical physical implementation has remained unclear so far. Here, we show
how strongly correlated systems developing an isolated two-fold degenerate
quantum dimer liquid groundstate can be used in the construction of
topologically stable qubits and discuss their implementation using Josephson

Gauge Fluxes in F-theory and Type IIB Orientifolds
We provide a detailed correspondence between G_4 gauge fluxes in F-theory
compactifications with SU(n) and SU(n)x(1) gauge symmetry and their Type IIB
orientifold limit. Based on the resolution of the relevant F-theory Tate models
we classify the factorisable G_4-fluxes and match them with the set of
universal D5-tadpole free U(1)-fluxes in Type IIB. Where available, the global
version of the universal spectral cover flux corresponds to Type IIB gauge flux
associated with a massive diagonal U(1). In U(1)-restricted Tate models extra
massless abelian fluxes exist which are associated with specific linear
combinations of Type IIB fluxes. Key to a quantitative match between F-theory
and Type IIB is a proper treatment of the conifold singularity encountered in
the Sen limit of generic F-theory models. We also shed further light on the

Random walk with barriers: Diffusion restricted by permeable membranes
Restrictions to molecular motion by barriers (membranes) are ubiquitous in
biological tissues, porous media and composite materials. A major challenge is
to characterize the microstructure of a material or an organism
nondestructively using a bulk transport measurement. Here we demonstrate how
the long-range structural correlations introduced by permeable membranes give
rise to distinct features of transport. We consider Brownian motion restricted
by randomly placed and oriented permeable membranes and focus on the
disorder-averaged diffusion propagator using a scattering approach. The
renormalization group solution reveals a scaling behavior of the diffusion
coefficient for large times, with a characteristically slow inverse square root
time dependence. The predicted time dependence of the diffusion coefficient
agrees well with Monte Carlo simulations in two dimensions. Our results can be
used to identify permeable membranes as restrictions to transport in disordered
materials and in biological tissues, and to quantify their permeability and

Tate Form and Weak Coupling Limits in F-theory
We consider the weak coupling limit of F-theory in the presence of
non-Abelian gauge groups implemented using the traditional ansatz coming from
  Tate's algorithm. We classify the types of singularities that could appear in
the weak coupling limit and explain their resolution. In particular, the weak
coupling limit of SU(n) gauge groups leads to an orientifold theory which
suffers from conifold singulaties that do not admit a crepant resolution
compatible with the orientifold involution. We present a simple resolution to
this problem by introducing a new weak coupling regime that admits
singularities compatible with both a crepant resolution and an orientifold
symmetry. We also comment on possible applications of the new limit to model
building. We finally discuss other unexpected phenomena as for example the
existence of several non-equivalent directions to flow from strong to weak
coupling leading to different gauge groups.Comment: 34 page
Accessibility-based reranking in multimedia search engines
Traditional multimedia search engines retrieve results based mostly on the query submitted by the user, or using a log of previous searches to provide personalized results, while not considering the accessibility of the results for users with vision or other types of impairments. In this paper, a novel approach is presented which incorporates the accessibility of images for users with various vision impairments, such as color blindness, cataract and glaucoma, in order to rerank the results of an image search engine. The accessibility of individual images is measured through the use of vision simulation filters. Multi-objective optimization techniques utilizing the image accessibility scores are used to handle users with multiple vision impairments, while the impairment profile of a specific user is used to select one from the Pareto-optimal solutions. The proposed approach has been tested with two image datasets, using both simulated and real impaired users, and the results verify its applicability. Although the proposed method has been used for vision accessibility-based reranking, it can also be extended for other types of personalization context
MFGE8 does not influence chorio-retinal homeostasis or choroidal neovascularization in vivo
Purpose: Milk fat globule-epidermal growth factor-factor VIII (MFGE8) is necessary for diurnal outer segment phagocytosis and promotes VEGF-dependent neovascularization. The prevalence of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in MFGE8 was studied in two exsudative or “wet” Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) groups and two corresponding control groups. We studied the effect of MFGE8 deficiency on retinal homeostasis with age and on choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in mice.
Methods: The distribution of the SNP (rs4945 and rs1878326) of MFGE8 was analyzed in two groups of patients with “wet” AMD and their age-matched controls from Germany and France. MFGE8-expressing cells were identified in Mfge8+/− mice expressing ß-galactosidase. Aged Mfge8+/− and Mfge8−/− mice were studied by funduscopy, histology, electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts of the choroid, and after laser-induced CNV.
Results: rs1878326 was associated with AMD in the French and German group. The Mfge8 promoter is highly active in photoreceptors but not in retinal pigment epithelium cells. Mfge8−/− mice did not differ from controls in terms of fundus appearance, photoreceptor cell layers, choroidal architecture or laser-induced CNV. In contrast, the Bruch's membrane (BM) was slightly but significantly thicker in Mfge8−/− mice as compared to controls.
Conclusions: Despite a reproducible minor increase of rs1878326 in AMD patients and a very modest increase in BM in Mfge8−/− mice, our data suggests that MFGE8 dysfunction does not play a critical role in the pathogenesis of AMD
Circulating markers of arterial thrombosis and late-stage age-related macular degeneration: a case-control study.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the relation of late-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with markers of systemic atherothrombosis. METHODS: A hospital-based case-control study of AMD was undertaken in London, UK. Cases of AMD (n=81) and controls (n=77) were group matched for age and sex. Standard protocols were used for colour fundus photography and to classify AMD; physical examination included height, weight, history of or treatment for vascular-related diseases and smoking status. Blood samples were taken for measurement of fibrinogen, factor VIIc (FVIIc), factor VIIIc, prothrombin fragment F1.2 (F1.2), tissue plasminogen activator, and von Willebrand factor. Odds ratios from logistic regression analyses of each atherothrombotic marker with AMD were adjusted for age, sex, and established cardiovascular disease risk factors, including smoking, blood pressure, body mass index, and total cholesterol. RESULTS: After adjustment FVIIc and possibly F1.2 were inversely associated with the risk of AMD; per 1 standard deviation increase in these markers the odds ratio were, respectively, 0.62 (95% confidence interval 0.40, 0.95) and 0.71 (0.46, 1.09). None of the other atherothrombotic risk factors appeared to be related to AMD status. There was weak evidence that aspirin is associated with a lower risk of AMD. CONCLUSIONS: This study does not provide strong evidence of associations between AMD and systematic markers of arterial thrombosis, but the potential effects of FVIIc, and F1.2 are worthy of further investigation
