The combined viscous semi-classical limit for a quantum hydrodynamic system with barrier potential

    Get PDF
We investigate the viscous model of quantum hydrodynamics, which describes the charge transport in a certain semiconductor. Quantum mechanical effects lead to third order derivatives, turning the stationary system into an elliptic system of mixed order in the sense of Douglis-Nirenberg. In the case most relevant to applications, the semiconductor device features a piecewise constant barrier potential. In the case of thermodynamicequilibrium, we obtain asymptotic expansions of interfacial layers of the particle density in neighbourhoods of the jump points of this barrier potential, and we present rigorous proofs of uniform estimates of the remainder terms in these asymptotic expansions

Adolescents\u27 and young adults\u27 concepts of developmental change

(DIPF/Orig.)Developmental and pedagogical research give little answer to questions about the adolescents\u27 and young adults\u27 understanding of development. Knowledge about the conceptualization in this domain is relevant, because \u27change\u27 constitutes a point of issue in the thinking and experience of adolescents. Further on the individual\u27s logic of change is an important component within the regulation of action. The methods and data reported come from three studies which analyze the individual perspectives about developmental dimensions and compare change related positions and preferences between groups. The results reveal both, similarities and differences between developmental theories and the adolescents\u27 concepts of change. The different ways of reasoning about development indicate themes which are significant for better understanding the individuals\u27 logics about developmental change. (DIPF/Orig.

The Peoria Recommendations: Suggestions on Promotion, Tenure and Evaluation for Forensics Professionals

The AFA Policy Debate Caucus gathered in 1993 at the Quail Roost Conference to create draft guidelines that would help forensic educators obtain tenure. While the original committee consisted primarily of debate educators, the goal was to create a document that could be supported by many forensic organizations. Clearly, the Quail Roost committee was correct in calling for a document that served all of these different constituencies. However, Quail Roost (as I‘ll further refer to the document in this article) was written from a policy debate paradigm. Quail Roost was updated in 2009 by a committee chaired by Robin Rowland from the University of Kansas and R. Jarrod Atchinson of Trinity University (Rowland, et al, 2010), and has been approved by the American Forensic Association. While many forensic educators have borrowed from Quail Roost in the preparation of promotion and tenure documents, this document reconsiders Quail Roost and the Status of Standards for Tenure and Promotion of Debate to account for directors who are part of individual events only or are part of comprehensive programs

This document, therefore, seeks to strike a balance between prescriptive and descriptive. While departments and institutions vary as far as standards of evaluation, tenure, and promotion are concerned, this document seeks to advance the work of former and current forensic educators such as Ann Burnett, MaryAnn Danielson, Tom Workman, David Williams and Joe Gantt to raise the kinds of questions that directors (and assistant directors) should ask of themselves and their programs, and to suggest questions that should be asked of forensics professionals 2 when it comes to their evaluation. In that light, these recommendations serve both to further the professionalism of the activity as well as to align forensics with the growing movement toward assessment (Bartanen Rigorous Program Assessment, Kerber and Cronn-Mills)

This paper seeks to both provide structure and formalization to the process of assessment, as well as to answer the question, Is it possible to run a \u27successful\u27 program that’s not based in competitive success? These recommendations serve both as a companion document and as an expansion of the recommendations previously made with regard to promotion and tenure (Dreher, 2010). The Peoria Recommendations dealt with questions to be asked of all forensic educators, documentation of teaching, research, and service, and questions to be asked by internal and external reviewers, and are summarized in appendix 1. This paper will provide further detail about the kinds of questions forensics professionals should use to evaluate their own performance, as well as to provide further guidance for internal and external reviewers. The role that forensics team members play in evaluation will also be discussed. The remainder of this pa-per will consider each of the five purposes (hereafter identified as standards) in light of appropriate literature from the forensics community, higher education assessment, and leadership

Stepwise management of COPD: what is next after bronchodilation?

Dyspnoea; Eosinophils; Inhaled corticosteroidsDisnea; Eosinófilos; Corticosteroides inhaladosDispnea; Eosinòfils; Corticoides inhalatsInhaled bronchodilator therapy with long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) and long-acting β2-agonists (LABAs) in combination is currently the mainstay of treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Treatment guidelines recommend the addition of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) to LABA/LAMA only in patients with a history of frequent/severe exacerbations and high blood eosinophil counts, or in those with concomitant asthma. Despite this, real-world data suggest that clinicians are not adhering to this guidance and that ICS are frequently overused. This is possibly due to the incorrect assumption that when LABA/LAMA therapy is not sufficient, adding an ICS to the treatment regimen is the logical next step. In this narrative review, we describe global and country-specific guideline recommendations from Germany, Spain, and Japan and compare these with real-world data on LABA/LAMA and ICS use in clinical practice. We also provide a clinical guide to the use of add-on therapies with LABA/LAMA for different patient phenotypes, including (1) patients still symptomatic (but not exacerbating) despite LABA/LAMA treatment; (2) patients still exacerbating despite LABA/LAMA treatment who have high blood eosinophil counts; and (3) patients still exacerbating despite LABA/LAMA treatment who do not have high blood eosinophils or concomitant asthma

LABA/LAMA as First-Line Therapy for COPD: A Summary of the Evidence and Guideline Recommendations

COPD; Bronchodilator; Inhaled corticosteroidEPOC; Broncodilatador; Corticosteroides inhaladosMPOC; Broncodilatador; Corticosteroides inhalatsInhaled bronchodilators (alone or in combination) are the cornerstone of treatment for symptomatic patients with COPD, either as initial/first-line treatment or for second-line/treatment escalation in patients who experience persistent symptoms or exacerbations on monotherapy. The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease 2022 report recommends initial pharmacological treatment with a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) or a long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) as monotherapy for most patients, or dual bronchodilator therapy (LABA/LAMA) in patients with more severe symptoms, regardless of exacerbation history. The recommendations for LABA/LAMA are broader in the American Thoracic Society treatment guidelines, which strongly recommend LABA/LAMA combination therapy over LAMA or LABA monotherapy in patients with COPD and dyspnea or exercise intolerance. However, despite consistent guideline recommendations, real-world prescribing data indicate that LAMA and/or LABA without an inhaled corticosteroid are not the most widely prescribed therapies in COPD. This article reviews global and regional/national guideline recommendations for the use of LABA/LAMA in COPD, examines the evidence for the effectiveness and safety of LABA/LAMA versus other therapies and offers a practical guide for clinicians to help ensure appropriate use of LABA/LAMA therapy. This research and the APC were funded by Boehringer Ingelheim

Counting on You: The Rhetoric of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards .

This study sought to initiate the process of identifying the rhetoric of mathematics as a distinct field of research, while acknowledging its basis in the rhetoric of science and other literatures. Accordingly, the study started by examining the external basis of the rhetoric of mathematics; in other words, how discourse affects the way in which the culture views mathematics. The primary text for this study was the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics\u27 three-volume Standards for School Mathematics. This document, designed to reform mathematics education from kindergarten through twelfth grade, was shown not to be completely successful in its goal of encouraging teachers to adopt its viewpoint. A synthesis of narrative theory and movement theory was used in this analysis. Marie Maclean\u27s and Susan Lanser\u27s conceptions of narrative were used to ground the theoretical framework, with Didier Coste\u27s work used to bridge the gap between literary conceptions of narrative and communication theory. The study also examined the Standards as a movement, using Ralph Smith and Russell Windes\u27 approach to the study of innovational movements. The NCTM had aspects of a transformational movement as well as an innovational movement, but did not completely belong to either type of movement. This study also examined the NCTM as an expert rhetor, using Thomas Lessl\u27s conception of scientific rhetors who move into the public sphere. The study examined how expert rhetors must ultimately exhort fellow members of an elite subgroup, while at the same time, encouraging new members to join
