Community adult education for a social vaccine in pandemic and post pandemic times

This article argues for a 'social vaccine' in pandemic times that underpins the fourbasic requirements for global health and equity to flourish by providing a life withsecurity, opportunities that are fair, a planet that is habitable and supportsbiodiversity and governance to ensure resources are fairly distributed (Baum andFriel, 2020). By a ‘social vaccine’ I do not mean a biological vaccine that isproduced in laboratories and injected in arms to produce immunity to the COVID19virus. A ‘social vaccine’ is an antidote to counteract the consequences and long-termeffects of epidemic upheaval, designed from below in participatory and dialogicalrelationships with those worst affected by its consequences. This article argues thatcommunity adult education, which has incessantly prioritised employability skillstraining, should play a pivotal role in providing a ‘social vaccine’ in pandemic andpost-pandemic times. The significance of community adult education is that it seeksto build the curriculum from the inequalities and injustices that people experience intheir everyday lives by providing opportunities for individual and collective change

Transition of an Effective E-Learning Platform Application of Quality Program Elements into New Environment

This paper describes the strategies and considerations necessary in the transition of a highly effective e-learning teacher certification program for elementary preparation into secondary mathematics and science teacher preparation. The paper will review the effective elements of an existing program in elementary teacher preparation and an effort to make the transition to a secondary program, at a different university, in mathematics and science teacher preparation

Stormwater in Silver Bow and Blacktail Creeks: Implications for the Microbial Community

    Get PDF
Silver Bow and Blacktail Creeks are the headwaters of the Clark Fork River and are impacted by historic mining activities in the area. Although metal concentrations of runoff into the creeks are monitored and reported in previous studies, the composition and diversity of microbial communities are unknown. We seek to identify the microbial communities present and investigate changes in community structure due to stormwater impact, thereby determining and monitoring the overall environmental health of the system. We sampled five sites in Silver Bow and Blacktail Creeks in Butte, MT for chemical and biological analyses during high stormwater flow events. Water samples were collected for analysis of major anions and cations, metal concentrations, dissolved inorganic and organic carbon and carbon isotopes and hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in water. In situ measurements of pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen were taken at the time of sampling. Redox sensitive species - total dissolved sulfide, dissolved silica and ferrous iron - were measured using wet chemical tests and field spectrophotometry. Concurrent biological samples were collected for microbial identification and diversity (DNA), activity (protein), quantity (cell counts) and culturing. Overall microbial results are in progress, but water chemistry data provide clues about microbial habitats available in the creeks. Results upstream in Butte will be compared to downstream areas such as Durant Canyon and the Warm Springs Settling Ponds. The relationship between water chemistry, microbes, and overall ecosystem health can be characterized by deciphering how water chemistry affects microbial activity and vice versa

The human myometrium differentially expresses mTOR signalling components before and during pregnancy: Evidence for regulation by progesterone

Emerging studies implicate the signalling of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in a number of reproductive functions. To this date, there are no data regarding the expression of mTOR signalling components in the human myometrium during pregnancy. We hypothesized that mTOR-related genes might be differentially expressed in term or preterm labour as well as in labour or non-labour myometria during pregnancy. Using quantitative RT-PCR we demonstrate for first time that there is a significant downregulation of mTOR, DEPTOR, and Raptor in preterm labouring myometria when compared to non-pregnant tissues taken from the same area (lower segment). We used an immortalized myometrial cell line (ULTR) as an in vitro model to dissect further mTOR signalling. In ULTR cells DEPTOR and Rictor had a cytoplasmic distribution, whereas mTOR and Raptor were detected in the cytoplasm and the nucleus, indicative of mTORC1 shuttling. Treatment with inflammatory cytokines caused only minor changes in gene expression of these components, whereas progesterone caused significant down-regulation. We performed a non-biased gene expression analysis of ULTR cells using Nimblegen human gene expression microarray (n = 3), and selected genes were validated by quantitative RT-PCR in progesterone treated myometrial cells. Progesterone significantly down-regulated key components of the mTOR pathway. We conclude that the human myometrium differentially expresses mTOR signalling components and they can be regulated by progesterone. A model of emulation funds

© 2014 AFAANZ. Emulation funds are a potentially cost-effective way for multimanager funds to improve their investment performance by delaying and netting trade signals from underlying managers. We develop a model to represent the expected sources of differential performance in an emulation fund relative to its underlying multimanager portfolio. The model formalises the expected interaction between potential savings and opportunity costs and allows us to observe complexities in the emulation process that are hidden without a benchmark. Finally, the functional representation of the model allows sensitivity analysis of the emulation fund to key parameters and enables us to determine theoretically optimal lag periods

Peace in The Middle of The Storm

The march towards biblical Revelation and restoration began at Calvary and continues today. A comforter and Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE) are given to sustain believers in these times. As educators and more so as followers of Jesus the Christ, there are certain truths we hold. Among them is that we are just passing through this life. In our traversing of this life, we accept the command to spread the good news, utilize our gifts, and do all unto the glory of God. So as educators, the main question throughout the COVID pandemic, with political and social unrest in the world, the murder of George Floyd and others at the hands of the police is “Is God still on campus and where is He in all this?” He is likely where He always is; “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (New International Version Bible, 2011, Isaiah 41:10)
