Photometric observations of Southern Abell Cluster Redshifts Survey Clusters: Structure of galaxies in the inner region of clusters of galaxies

We analyze photometric properties of 1384 cluster galaxies as a function of the normalized distance to cluster center. These galaxies were selected in the central region (r/r200≤r/r_{200} \leq 0.8) of 14 southern Abell clusters chosen from the Southern Abell Cluster Redshifts Survey (SARS). For 507 of these galaxies we also obtained their luminosity profiles. We have studied the morphology-clustercentric distance relation on the basis of the shape parameter nn of the S\'ersic's law. We also have analyzed the presence of a possible segregation in magnitude for both, the galaxy total luminosity and that of their components (i.e. the bulge and the disk). Results show a marginal (2σ2\sigma level) decrease of the total luminosity as a function of normalized radius. However, when bulges are analyzed separately, a significant luminosity segregation is found (3σ3\sigma and 2σ2\sigma for galaxies in projection and member galaxies respectively). The fraction of bulges brighter than MB≤−22M_B \leq -22 is three times larger in the core of clusters than in the outer region. Our analysis of the disk component suggests that disks are, on average, less luminous in the cluster core than at r/r200∼0.8r/r_{200} \sim 0.8. In addition, we found that the magnitude-size relation as a function of r/r200r/r_{200} indicates (at 2σ2\sigma level) that disks are smaller and centrally brighter in the core of clusters. However, the Kormendy relation (the bulge magnitude-size relation) appears to be independent of environment.Comment: To appear in the A

Light and Laser Scanning Microscopy analysis of hydroxyapatite used in periodontal osseous defects in man: evidence of a different resorption pattern in bone and soft tissues

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a highly biocompatible material that recently has been shown to undergo biodegradation. The mechanisms of this phenomenon are unclear, and humoral and cellular events have been thought to be implicated. In the present study HA particles were put into infraosseous defects on teeth that were to be extracted for prosthetic reasons and then retrieved after a 1 year period. The specimens were processed with the cutting grinding system. Results show a very sharp difference of the biodegradation processes, related to the tissues that surround the HA particles. HA in tight contact with mineralized bone showed no evidence of degradation or resorption, while on the contrary, in the areas where bone loose connective tissue was present, it was possible to observe HA crystals detached and scattered in cells cytoplasm or extracellular fluids. This dissolution and resorption phenomenon were observed also by Laser Scanning Microscope (LSM) in fluorescent mode. These differences in degrees of degradation between bone and loose connective tissue could be due to the small amount of interstitial fluid present in mineralized bone and the greater flow of fluid through connective tissue.L’hydroxyapatite (HA) est un matériel hautement biocompatible qui s’est révélé récemment capable de subir une biodégradation.

The merging/AGN connection II. Ionization of the circumnuclear regions

We report the first results of a study of a sample of 20 galaxy mergers/interacting systems, using the VIMOS and PMAS integral field spectrographs. For each object, we extracted the integrated spectrum of the central regions and analyzed the ionization state using classical diagnostic diagrams (Veilleux & Osterbrock 1987). There is evidence of AGN ionization in 4 of the objects, i.e. 20% of the sample, a considerably higher fraction than found in previous studies ~4%Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publishing in A&A Letter

Electrochemical Reduction and Oxidation of Ruddlesden–Popper-Type La2_{2}NiO3_{3}F2_{2} within Fluoride-Ion Batteries

Within this article, it is shown that an electrochemical defluorination and additional fluorination of Ruddlesden–Popper-type La2_2NiO3_3F2_2 is possible within all-solid-state fluoride-ion batteries. Structural changes within the reduced and oxidized phases have been examined by X-ray diffraction studies at different states of charging and discharging. The synthesis of the oxidized phase La2_2NiO3_3F2+x_{2+x} proved to be successful by structural analysis using both X-ray powder diffraction and automated electron diffraction tomography techniques. The structural reversibility on re-fluorinating and re-defluorinating is also demonstrated. Moreover, the influence of different sequences of consecutive reduction and oxidation steps on the formed phases has been investigated. The observed structural changes have been compared to changes in phases obtained via other topochemical modification approaches such as hydride-based reduction and oxidative fluorination using F2_2 gas, highlighting the potential of such electrochemical reactions as alternative synthesis routes. Furthermore, the electrochemical routes represent safe and controllable synthesis approaches for novel phases, which cannot be synthesized via other topochemical methods. Additionally, side reactions, occurring alongside the desired electrochemical reactions, have been addressed and the cycling performance has been studied

approach to a water safety plan for recreational waters disinfection of a drainage pumping station as an unconventional point source of fecal contamination

Abstract In the context of the management of bathing water quality, the intermittent contamination of rainwater drainage pumps (unconventional point sources) could be controlled by peracetic acid disinfection. Thus, a field experimental study was carried out to set up a water safety plan, determining the monitoring parameters and the critical limit for corrective actions. With a 0.5 mg/l dosage, the average logarithmic microbial reduction was 0.50 ± 0.48 for Escherichia coli (EC) and 0.43 ± 0.54 for intestinal enterococci. Among the chemical and physical parameters that could be monitored in real time, the oxidation–reduction potential was the only one able to predict the microbial concentration discharged from a drainage pump and the logarithmic abatement of EC. Considering the possible impact of this source on bathing waters in terms of additional risk of gastrointestinal infections, the critical limit for continuous monitoring was established using a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) model

Convection in colloidal suspensions with particle-concentration-dependent viscosity

The onset of thermal convection in a horizontal layer of a colloidal suspension is investigated in terms of a continuum model for binary-fluid mixtures where the viscosity depends on the local concentration of colloidal particles. With an increasing difference between the viscosity at the warmer and the colder boundary the threshold of convection is reduced in the range of positive values of the separation ratio psi with the onset of stationary convection as well as in the range of negative values of psi with an oscillatory Hopf bifurcation. Additionally the convection rolls are shifted downwards with respect to the center of the horizontal layer for stationary convection (psi>0) and upwards for the Hopf bifurcation (psi<0).Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to European Physical Journal
