    A resolved, au-scale gas disk around the B[e] star HD 50138

    articleHD 50138 is a B[e] star surrounded by a large amount of circumstellar gas and dust. Its spectrum shows characteristics which may indicate either a pre- or a post-main-sequence system. Mapping the kinematics of the gas in the inner few au of the system contributes to a better understanding of its physical nature. We present the first high spatial and spectral resolution interferometric observations of the BrÎł line of HD 50138, obtained with VLTI/AMBER. The line emission originates in a region more compact (up to 3 au) than the continuum-emitting region. Blue- and red-shifted emission originates from the two different hemispheres of an elongated structure perpendicular to the polarization angle. The velocity of the emitting medium decreases radially. An overall offset along the NW direction between the line- and continuum-emitting regions is observed. We compare the data with a geometric model of a thin Keplerian disk and a spherical halo on top of a Gaussian continuum. Most of the data are well reproduced by this model, except for the variability, the global offset and the visibility at the systemic velocity. The evolutionary state of the system is discussed; most diagnostics are ambiguous and may point either to a post-main-sequence or a pre-main-sequence nature.National Science FoundationGeorgia State UniversityW.M.     The role of virulence factors in the outcome of staphylococcal peritonitis in CAPD patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Peritonitis continues to be the most frequent cause of peritoneal dialysis (PD) failure, with an important impact on patient mortality. Gram-positive cocci such as <it>Staphylococcus epidermidis</it>, other coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), and <it>Staphylococcus aureus </it>are the most frequent etiological agents of PD-associated peritonitis worldwide. The objective of the present study was to compare peritonitis caused by <it>S. aureus </it>and CoNS and to evaluate the factors influencing outcome.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Records of 86 new episodes of staphylococcal peritonitis that occurred between 1996 and 2000 in the Dialysis unit of a single university hospital were studied (35 due to <it>S. aureus</it>, 24 to <it>S. epidermidis </it>and 27 to other CoNS). The production of slime, lipase, lecithinase, nuclease (DNAse), thermonuclease (TNAse), α- and ÎČ-hemolysin, enterotoxins (SEA, SEB, SEC, SED) and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) was studied in <it>S. aureus </it>and CoNS. Antimicrobial susceptibility was evaluated based on the minimal inhibitory concentration determined by the E-test. Outcome predictors were evaluated by two logistic regression models.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The oxacillin susceptibility rate was 85.7% for <it>S. aureus</it>, 41.6% for <it>S. epidermidis</it>, and 51.8% for other CoNS (p = 0.001). Production of toxins and enzymes, except for enterotoxin A and α-hemolysin, was associated with <it>S. aureus </it>episodes (p < 0.001), whereas slime production was positive in 23.5% of CoNS and 8.6% of <it>S. aureus </it>strains (p = 0.0047). The first model did not include enzymes and toxins due to their association with <it>S. aureus</it>. The odds of resolution were 9.5 times higher for <it>S. epidermidis </it>than for <it>S. aureus </it>(p = 0.02) episodes, and were similar for <it>S. epidermidis </it>and other CoNS (p = 0.8). The resolution odds were 68 times higher for non-slime producers (p = 0.001) and were not influenced by oxacillin resistance among vancomycin-treated cases (p = 0.89). In the second model, the resolution rate was similar for <it>S. aureus </it>and <it>S. epidermidis </it>(p = 0.70), and slime (p = 0.001) and α-hemolysin (p = 0.04) production were independent predictors of non-resolution.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Bacterial species and virulence factors rather than antibiotic resistance influence the outcome of staphylococcal peritonitis.</p

    A mosca-branca Bemisia tabaci BiĂłtipo B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), Ă© um herbĂ­voro de difĂ­cil controle devido Ă  alta plasticidade genotĂ­pica da espĂ©cie. No tomateiro pode causar danos severos principalmente pela transmissĂŁo de diversas viroses. O manejo do sistema de produção e o consĂłrcio de culturas podem ter um efeito direto nas populaçÔes desse herbĂ­voro, sem que seja necessĂĄria a aplicação de inseticidas. Avaliou-se a influĂȘncia dos sistemas de produção orgĂąnico e convencional e o consĂłrcio tomate-coentro na dinĂąmica populacional da mosca-branca no campo experimental da Embrapa Hortaliças, de maio a setembro/06. O monitoramento dos adultos da mosca-branca e de seus inimigos naturais foi realizado utilizando-se armadilhas adesivas amarelas fixadas nas bordas e no interior das parcelas experimentais e a amostragem de ninfas foi realizada por observação direta das folhas de tomate no campo. Embora as populaçÔes ao redor dos diferentes tratamentos fossem equivalentes, a abundĂąncia de adultos de mosca-branca foi significativamente menor nas parcelas de tomate consorciado com coentro, tanto no sistema convencional como orgĂąnico. Apenas o consĂłrcio tomatecoentro em sistema orgĂąnico apresentou redução significativa na quantidade de ninfas por planta em relação aos demais tratamentos. Os inimigos naturais foram significativamente mais abundantes em sistema orgĂąnico e foi verificada uma correlação negativa da abundĂąncia dos inimigos naturais e a quantidade de ninfas por planta.     Dichrostachys cinerea (L.) Wight et Arn (Mimosaceae) hydro-alcoholic extract action on the contractility of tracheal smooth muscle isolated from guinea-pig

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Dichrostachys cinerea </it>(L.) Wight et Arn. (Mimosaceae) is largely used in ethno-medically across Africa, and mainly employed for the treatment of asthma in Ivory Coast and Gabon. The paper analyses the relaxation induced by the methanolic extract of <it>D. cinerea </it>(Edici) in the guinea-pig trachea preparations (GPTPs). Purpose: This study aimed to bring out the scientific basis to the use of this plant leading to the validation of this phytomedicine.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>The aorta obtained from guinea-pigs was immediately placed in a Mac Ewen solution. Experiments were performed in preparations suspended between two L-shaped stainless steel hooks in a 10 ml organ bath containing Mac Ewen solution. The isometric contractile force of the aorta strips of guinea-pig were recorded by using a strain gauge. The different drugs were directly administered into the organ bath and the magnitude of GPTPs was evaluated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Phytochemical analysis of the methanolic extract of Dichrostachys <it>cinerea </it>(Edici) using chemical methods revealed the presence of flavenoids, tannins, sterols, triterpenes and polyphenols. Pharmacological studies performed in GPTPs show that of <it>Dichrostachys cinerea </it>(0.1 mg/ml - 2 mg/ml) evoked a broncho-constriction in GPTPs. Whereas, at concentration up to 2 mg/ml, Edici induced a significant dose-dependent relaxation in the GPTPs. KCl-, ACh- or histamine-evoked contractions of isolated trachea was significantly inhibited by increasing concentrations of Edici (3.5-10 mg/ml). Edici (10 mg/ml) as well as promethazine (0.25 mg/ml) significantly inhibited contractions induced by increasing concentrations of histamine (1×10<sup>-7</sup>-1×10<sup>-4</sup>mg/ml). In the presence of atropine at a concentration of 10<sup>-6</sup>mg/ml, contractile response curve (CRC) evoked by ACh (1×10<sup>-5</sup>-1×10<sup>-2 </sup>mg/ml) was significantly abolished in concentration-dependent manner. Edici did not significantly reduced ACh evoked contraction (10<sup>-5</sup>-10<sup>-2</sup>mg/ml).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These observations suggest that Edici could act through two mechanisms: firstly by activation of ÎČ-adrenergic or histaminergic receptors; and secondly muscarinic receptors may not be greatly involved, that justifying the use of the extract in traditional Medicine in Africa.</p
