    Lovelock-Lifshitz Black Holes

    In this paper, we investigate the existence of Lifshitz solutions in Lovelock gravity, both in vacuum and in the presence of a massive vector field. We show that the Lovelock terms can support the Lifshitz solution provided the constants of the theory are suitably chosen. We obtain an exact black hole solution with Lifshitz asymptotics of any scaling parameter zz in both Gauss-Bonnet and in pure 3rd order Lovelock gravity. If matter is added in the form of a massive vector field, we also show that Lifshitz solutions in Lovelock gravity exist; these can be regarded as corrections to Einstein gravity coupled to this form of matter. For this form of matter we numerically obtain a broad range of charged black hole solutions with Lifshitz asymptotics, for either sign of the cosmological constant. We find that these asymptotic Lifshitz solutions are more sensitive to corrections induced by Lovelock gravity than are their asymptotic AdS counterparts. We also consider the thermodynamics of the black hole solutions and show that the temperature of large black holes with curved horizons is proportional to r0zr_0^z where zz is the critical exponent; this relationship holds for black branes of any size. As is the case for asymptotic AdS black holes, we find that an extreme black hole exists only for the case of horizons with negative curvature. We also find that these Lovelock-Lifshitz black holes have no unstable phase, in contrast to the Lovelock-AdS case.     An HMM-Based Framework for Supporting Accurate Classification of Music Datasets

    open3In this paper, we use Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coecients (MFCC) to build statistical models of classical music composers directly from the music datasets. Several musical pieces are divided by instruments (String, Piano, Chorus, Orchestra), and, for each instrument, statistical models of the composers are computed.We selected 19 dierent composers spanning four centuries by using a total number of 400 musical pieces. Each musical piece is classied as belonging to a composer if the corresponding HMM gives the highest likelihood for that piece. We show that the so-developed models can be used to obtain useful information on the correlation between the composers. Moreover, by using the maximum likelihood approach, we also classied the instrumentation used by the same composer. Besides as an analysis tool, the described approach has been used as a classier. This overall originates an HMM-based framework for supporting accurate classication of music datasets. On a dataset of String Quartet movements, we obtained an average composer classication accuracy of more than 96%. As regards instrumentation classication, we obtained an average classication of slightly less than 100% for Piano, Orchestra and String Quartet.     Electrically tunable organic-inorganic hybrid polaritons with monolayer WS2.

    Exciton-polaritons are quasiparticles consisting of a linear superposition of photonic and excitonic states, offering potential for nonlinear optical devices. The excitonic component of the polariton provides a finite Coulomb scattering cross section, such that the different types of exciton found in organic materials (Frenkel) and inorganic materials (Wannier-Mott) produce polaritons with different interparticle interaction strength. A hybrid polariton state with distinct excitons provides a potential technological route towards in situ control of nonlinear behaviour. Here we demonstrate a device in which hybrid polaritons are displayed at ambient temperatures, the excitonic component of which is part Frenkel and part Wannier-Mott, and in which the dominant exciton type can be switched with an applied voltage. The device consists of an open microcavity containing both organic dye and a monolayer of the transition metal dichalcogenide WS2. Our findings offer a perspective for electrically controlled nonlinear polariton devices at room temperature

    Impact of generic alendronate cost on the cost-effectiveness of osteoporosis screening and treatment

    Introduction: Since alendronate became available in generic form in the Unites States in 2008, its price has been decreasing. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of alendronate cost on the cost-effectiveness of osteoporosis screening and treatment in postmenopausal women. Methods: Microsimulation cost-effectiveness model of osteoporosis screening and treatment for U.S. women age 65 and older. We assumed screening initiation at age 65 with central dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and alendronate treatment for individuals with osteoporosis; with a comparator of "no screening" and treatment only after fracture occurrence. We evaluated annual alendronate costs of 20through20 through 800; outcome measures included fractures; nursing home admission; medication adverse events; death; costs; quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs); and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) in 2010 U.S. dollars per QALY gained. A lifetime time horizon was used, and direct costs were included. Base-case and sensitivity analyses were performed. Results: Base-case analysis results showed that at annual alendronate costs of 200orless,osteoporosisscreeningfollowedbytreatmentwascostsaving,resultinginlowertotalcoststhannoscreeningaswellasmoreQALYs(10.6additionalqualityadjustedlifedays).Whenassumingalendronatecostsof200 or less, osteoporosis screening followed by treatment was cost-saving, resulting in lower total costs than no screening as well as more QALYs (10.6 additional quality-adjusted life-days). When assuming alendronate costs of 400 through 800,screeningandtreatmentresultedingreaterlifetimecoststhannoscreeningbutwashighlycosteffective,withICERsrangingfrom800, screening and treatment resulted in greater lifetime costs than no screening but was highly cost-effective, with ICERs ranging from 714 per QALY gained through 13,902perQALYgained.Probabilisticsensitivityanalysesrevealedthatthecosteffectivenessofosteoporosisscreeningfollowedbyalendronatetreatmentwasrobusttojointinputparameterestimatevariationatawillingnesstopaythresholdof13,902 per QALY gained. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses revealed that the cost-effectiveness of osteoporosis screening followed by alendronate treatment was robust to joint input parameter estimate variation at a willingness-to-pay threshold of 50,000/QALY at all alendronate costs evaluated. Conclusions: Osteoporosis screening followed by alendronate treatment is effective and highly cost-effective for postmenopausal women across a range of alendronate costs, and may be cost-saving at annual alendronate costs of $200 or less. © 2012 Nayak et al

    Widespread sex differences in gene expression and splicing in the adult human brain

    There is strong evidence to show that men and women differ in terms of neurodevelopment, neurochemistry and susceptibility to neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disease. The molecular basis of these differences remains unclear. Progress in this field has been hampered by the lack of genome-wide information on sex differences in gene expression and in particular splicing in the human brain. Here we address this issue by using post-mortem adult human brain and spinal cord samples originating from 137 neuropathologically confirmed control individuals to study whole-genome gene expression and splicing in 12 CNS regions. We show that sex differences in gene expression and splicing are widespread in adult human brain, being detectable in all major brain regions and involving 2.5% of all expressed genes. We give examples of genes where sex-biased expression is both disease-relevant and likely to have functional consequences, and provide evidence suggesting that sex biases in expression may reflect sex-biased gene regulatory structures

    The Cultivation of Water Hyacinth in India as a Feedstock for Anaerobic Digestion: Development of a Predictive Model for Scaling Integrated Systems

    A novel, integrated system is proposed for the cultivation and co-digestion of the invasive macrophyte water hyacinth (WH) with cow manure (CM) for the production of biogas for cooking in rural India. This study investigates the pre-treatment approaches and performs a techno-economic analysis of producing biogas in fixeddome digesters as a replacement for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Methodologies have been developed for the cultivation of WH collected from wild plants in the Indrayani River, Pune, India. Cultivation trials were performed in 350 litre tanks using water, which was nutrient fed with CM. Cultivation trials were performed over a 3 week period, and growth rates were determined by removing and weighing the biomass at regular time intervals. Cultivation results provided typical yields and growth rates of biomass, allowing predictions to be made for cultivation scaling. Samples of cultivated WH have been co-digested with CM at a 20:80 ratio in 200 L anaerobic digesters, allowing for the prediction of bio-methane yields from fixed-dome anaerobic digesters in real world conditions, which are commonly used in the rural locations of India. A calculator has been developed, allowing us to estimate the scaling requirements for the operation of an integrated biomass cultivation and anaerobic co-digestion unit to produce an equivalent amount of biogas to replace between one and three LPG cylinders per month. A techno-economic analysis of introducing WH into fixed-dome digesters in India demonstrated that the payback periods range from 9 years to under 1 year depending on the economic strategies. To replace between one and three LPG cylinders per month using the discussed feedstock ratio, the cultivation area of WH required to produce sufficient co-feedstock ranges within 10–55 m2

    Medicinal importance of grapefruit juice and its interaction with various drugs

    Grapefruit juice is consumed widely in today's health conscious world as a protector against cardiovascular diseases and cancers. It has however, been found to be an inhibitor of the intestinal cytochrome P – 450 3A4 system, which is responsible for the first pass metabolism of many drugs. The P – glycoprotein pump, found in the brush border of the intestinal wall which transports many of these cytochrome P – 450 3A4 substrates, has also been implicated to be inhibited by grapefruit juice. By inhibiting these enzyme systems, grapefruit juice alters the pharmacokinetics of a variety of medications, leading to elevation of their serum concentrations. Most notable are its effects on the calcium channel antagonist and the statin group of drugs. In the case of many drugs, the increased serum concentration has been found to be associated with increased frequency of dose dependent adverse effects. In this review, we have discussed the phytochemistry of grapefruit juice, the various drugs involved in the drug – grapefruit juice eraction with their mechanisms of action and have presented the clinical implications of these interactions
