Z lineshape and forward-backward asymmetries
Preliminary but close to final results on the Z lineshape and
Forward-Backward asymmetries from the four LEP experiments are presented.
Combined values extracted from ALEPH. DELPHI, L3 and OPAL data recorded at

Recent results from NA48/2 on decays and interpretation in terms of scattering lengths
Preliminary results from a new measurement of the decay by the Na48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS are reported. An unprecedented sample of more than 670000 decays in both charged modes have been collected in 2003. The form factors of the hadronic current (F, G, H) and phase shift () of the scattering have been measured using a model independent method and their variation with the ππ mass has been investigated. First evidence for a non zero term is reported. Thanks to a sizeable acceptance at large mass, a low background and a very good resolution, an improved accuracy can be reached when extracting the scattering length . Using more elaborated theory inputs and another NA48/2 result from decays, a consistent picture can be drawn for the scattering lengths and , in good agreement with Chiral Perturbation Theory predictions

Les tortues d'Hermann n'occupent plus qu'une aire résiduelle dans la Plaine et le Massif des Maures (Var). Elles se trouvent dans deux types de biotopes : un milieu ouvert, de type garrigue et un milieu plus fermé de type forêt méditerranéenne de basse altitude. Pendant des siècles, les hommes et les tortues ont vécu en harmonie dans ces deux types de milieux. Mais depuis la dernière guerre, les habitats de la tortue se sont dégradés ou au contraire se sont ensauvagés, ce qui a provoqué des déplacements ou des raréfactions des chéloniens
Experimental status of the isoscalar S wave at low energy: pole and scattering length
The experimental results obtained in the last few years on kaon decays
(K and, above all, Ke4 decays) allow a reliable, model independent
determination of low energy scattering in the S0 wave. Using them and,
eventually, other sets of data, it is possible to give a precise
parametrization of the S0 wave as well as to find the scattering length and
effective range parameter. One can also perform an extrapolation to the pole of
the " resonance" []. We obtain the results
and, for the pole, M_\sigma=484\pm17 \mev,\quad\gammav_\sigma/2=

Conductivity in organic semiconductors hybridized with the vacuum field
Organic semiconductors have generated considerable interest for their
potential for creating inexpensive and flexible devices easily processed on a
large scale [1-11]. However technological applications are currently limited by
the low mobility of the charge carriers associated with the disorder in these
materials [5-8]. Much effort over the past decades has therefore been focused
on optimizing the organisation of the material or the devices to improve
carrier mobility. Here we take a radically different path to solving this
problem, namely by injecting carriers into states that are hybridized to the
vacuum electromagnetic field. These are coherent states that can extend over as
many as 10^5 molecules and should thereby favour conductivity in such
materials. To test this idea, organic semiconductors were strongly coupled to
the vacuum electromagnetic field on plasmonic structures to form polaritonic
states with large Rabi splittings ca. 0.7 eV. Conductivity experiments show
that indeed the current does increase by an order of magnitude at resonance in
the coupled state, reflecting mostly a change in field-effect mobility as
revealed when the structure is gated in a transistor configuration. A
theoretical quantum model is presented that confirms the delocalization of the
wave-functions of the hybridized states and the consequences on the
conductivity. While this is a proof-of-principle study, in practice
conductivity mediated by light-matter hybridized states is easy to implement
and we therefore expect that it will be used to improve organic devices. More
broadly our findings illustrate the potential of engineering the vacuum
electromagnetic environment to modify and to improve properties of materials.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figure
Évaluation des risques écologiques causés par des matériaux de dragage: roposition d'une approche adaptée aux dépôts en gravière en eau
Une procédure d'évaluation des risques pour l'écosystème aquatique engendrés par un dépôt de matériaux de dragage dans une gravière type a été élaborée, et testée avec des échantillons de sédiments d'un canal du Nord-Est de la France. La procédure comporte une étape d'évaluation sommaire des risques, à partir de quotients des concentrations mesurées par les critères de danger correspondants, et une étape d'évaluation détaillée où des essais de toxicité et de lixiviation en colonnes sont mis en œuvre. Le scénario testé retient trois hypothèses, qui concernent (a) les effets sur les peuplements d'invertébrés benthiques, représentés notamment par Hyalella azteca et Chironomus riparius, (b) les effets sur les peuplements d'organismes pélagiques, représentés par Chlorella vulgaris, Ceriodaphnia dubia, et Brachionus calyciflorus, et (c) la pollution de la nappe alluviale associée. Différentes modalités d'exposition (essais normalisés, microcosmes) ont été testées. Dans le contexte particulier des trois sédiments étudiés, ces hypothèses se sont avérées plus ou moins discriminantes, la pollution de la nappe étant la plus sensible. Des améliorations de la procédure doivent être envisagées qui concernent à la fois la formulation des hypothèses (risques à court et long terme sur les organismes pélagiques), et les protocoles d'essai, tant pour les organismes du sédiment (rôle de la nourriture notamment) que pour les essais de lixiviation en colonnes.When contaminated by metals or synthetic organic compounds, dredged sediments may have negative impacts on receiving ecosystems. Therefore, there is a need for an operational risk assessment approach. Such a framework is proposed for dredged material deposits in open gravel quarries, which is a rather common means of disposal in France. The first step of the assessment relies upon chemical characterisation of the sediments; the resulting concentrations are divided by "probable effect concentrations" and pooled together, in order to calculate a global hazard quotient. According to the value of this quotient, several decisions can be taken: (a) undertake a detailed risk assessment, (b) dispose of the materials without further constraints, or (c) in case of uncertainty, do some biological testing (with Hyalella azteca and Chironomus riparius) in order to allow decisions. The second step is a detailed ecological risk assessment. Three different assessment endpoints have been proposed, which are (1) the deposit should have no effect on the structure and abundance of benthic invertebrates in the quarry, (2) it should have no long term effect on pelagic species, and (3) it should not cause groundwater pollution, as such quarries are in fact cross sections of shallow alluvial groundwater aquifers. A fourth assessment endpoint should be introduced, regarding health risks for recreational uses, including fishing, but this endpoint was not implemented in the current version of the approach. The analysis phase includes aquatic bioassays (bacteria - Metplate TM-, algae, microcrustaceans Ceriodaphnia dubia, rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus), and leaching assays in columns under ascendant flow.The proposed approach was tested with 3 sediments from a canal located in the north-eastern region of France. Microcosm assays were introduced in parallel to the proposed tests, in order to explore alternatives to standardised bioassays. According to their hazard quotient, the 3 sediments showed a contamination gradient; one of them should not have entered the detailed risk assessment phase, while another would have been further tested with H. azteca and C. riparius. In that case, this latter sediment would not have entered the detailed phase either, as it was not toxic to these species. However, the detailed risk assessment approach was applied to the three sediments, so as to test completely the relevance of the framework.The three sediments were not significantly toxic to either C. riparius or H. azteca. However, some effects were observed in microcosms, including genotoxicity to molluscs. In this case, no risk characterisation could be made. Pore waters extracted from the three sediments were not toxic or slightly toxic to bacteria, algae, and C. dubia; an EC10 value could be determined only for B. calyciflorus. Therefore, due to exposure calculations, it seems there is a risk to pelagic species. However, as 3 bioassays out of 4 were negative or inconclusive, a refinement step would seem to be necessary. The highest concentrations of cadmium, copper, chromium, nickel and zinc were measured in the first lixiviates of the most contaminated sediment. Yet, even in that case, the total extracted fraction remained less than 10% of the total load. This fraction was below 1% for the other sediments, whatever the metal. Maximum concentrations and predicted concentrations at 1 year were compared to drinking water standards. This comparison showed a real risk of degrading groundwater quality for that most contaminated sediment, and a transient risk due to cadmium and nickel for the following one on the contamination gradient.Considering these results, the design of the first step of the proposed assessment approach may be discussed, as one sediment which would not have been assessed in depth according to its hazard quotient did show a risk to pelagic species. This discrepancy underlines the fact that some sediment toxicity may exist below the lowest threshold. As it would be unrealistic to enter systematically into detailed risk assessments, the proposed thresholds in the decision diagram must be pragmatic compromises rather than absolutely safe boundaries. Moreover, protocol improvements are needed for sediment toxicity bioassays. Chronic endpoints are preferable, as they are more sensitive and more relevant. Another issue is related to the role of additional food: not adding food may increase the apparent toxicity, but the sediment organic content, which is an alternative food source, may also be a contaminant carrier. Furthermore, the second assessment endpoint (risk to pelagic species) should be reformulated, as it includes in fact two different questions. Short-term risks related to the deposition phase could be assessed with standardised bioassays like C. dubia survival and reproduction and algal growth, while longer term risks related to contaminant diffusion could be assessed with microcosms. Genotoxic effects were observed at rather high levels, as compared to published results. This result stresses the interest of introducing sensitive and early markers in the risk assessment process, although their real meaning for ecosystems is not yet fully elucidated. Finally, the leaching tests in columns are not completely satisfactory, as the column filling implies that one must first dry the sediments, which will alter their structure. Other application trials along with field validation studies should be carried out prior to the introduction of this scenario in operational or regulatory frameworks
Variations à court terme des compartiments planctoniques d'un lac humique du Bouclier canadien
Les variations spatio-temporelles à court terme des compartiments planctoniques ont été étudiées simultanément du 30 juillet au 5 août 1986 dans un lac humique du Bouclier canadien. L'abondance du bactérioplancton fluctue de 1,4 à 1,7.106 cell. ml.-1 (coloration DAPI) ou de 2,7 à 7,7.106 cell. ml-1; (coloration Acridine Orange). La production du bactérioplancton estimée par incorporation de 3H méthyl thimidine, varie de 4 à 24.106 cell. l-1 h-1. Les valeurs d'activité hétérotrophe potentielle bactérienne estimée par assimilation de 14C glucose, s'échelonnent de 0,007 à 0,065 µg C.l-1. h-1. La biomasse pigmentaire (chlore. a et pheopigments) varie de 6,8 à 21,7 mg.m-3 . La production primaire est très faible (max. : 10 mg C. m-3 .h-1; 20 mg C.m-2 .h-1 ) et décroît très rapidement avec la profondeur (25 % à 82 % dans le premier mètre). Le microzooplancton (Rotifères, Bosmina, nauplies) représente plus de 90 % du peuplement zooplanctonique et les taux de broutage global du macrozooplancton sont faibles (25 % j-1). Les compartiments hétérotrophes prédominent dans le métabolisme du lac par rapport au compartiment autotrophe. Les patrons de variation spatiale reflètent la stratification verticale des compartiments et des processus autotrophes et hétérotrophes. Les maxima de photosynthèse, d'ATP et de production bactérienne se situent dans les eaux épilimnétiques tandis que les maxima d'abondance du bactérioptancton et des pigments se rencontrent dans l'hypolimnion. Le zooplancton est plus dense et broute d'avantage dans la strate 1-3 m. Ces variations spatiales semblent influencer l'activité hétérotrophe potentielle du bactérioptancton. Nos résultats montrent aussi des variations temporelles à court terme de la production primaire, de l'assimilation hétérotrophe et du broutage du macrozooplancton. Cette étude préliminaire met en lumière la nécessité de tenir compte des variations à court terme lors des études des relations trophodynamiques dans les écosystèmes planctoniques.Short term spatial and temporal variations in planktonic compartments were studied simultaneously, from July 30th to August 5th, 1986, in a humic lake on the Canadian Shield. Bacterial production, as measured by incorporation of 3H methyl-thimidine, was estimated at 4-24 106 cells. l-1. h-1 and potential heterotrophic bacterial activity ranged from 0,007 to 0,065 µg C.l-1. h-1, as estimated by 14C glucose incorporation. Pigments biomass (chloro. a and phaeopigments) varied from 6,8 to 21,7 mg m-3. Primary production was low (max. : 10 mg C.m-3. h-1; 20 mg C.m-2. h-1) and decreased rapidly with depth (25-82 % in 1 m depth). Microzooplankton (rotifera, Bosmina, nauplii) accounted for more than 90 % of total numbers and macrozooplankton global grazing rates were low (25 % d-1). The heterotrophic compartments play a greater rate in the lake metabolism than the autotrophic compartment. Spatial variations reflect the stratification of the heterotrophic and autotrophic organisms and processes with depth. Maximum levels in primary production, ATP and bacterial production occur in epilimnetic waters, while maxima in bacterial numbers and algal pigments occur in the hypolimnion. Zooplancton density and macrozooplankton grazing rates were higher in the 1-3 m strata. These spatial patterns seem to influence the vertical profiles of the bacterial potential heterotrophic activity. Our results also show short term temporal variations in primary production, potential heterotrophic activity of bacterioplankton and macrozooplankton grazing rates. Detection of sub-shot-noise spatial correlation in high-gain parametric down-conversion
Using a 1GW-1ps pump laser pulse in high gain parametric down-conversion
allows us to detect sub-shot-noise spatial quantum correlation with up to one
hundred photoelectrons per mode, by means of a high efficiency CCD. The
statistics is performed in single-shot over independent spatial replica of the
system. The paper highlights the evidence of quantum correlation between
symmetrical signal and idler spatial areas in the far field, in the high gain
regime. In accordance with the predictions of numerical calculations the
observed transition from the quantum to the classical regime is interpreted as
a consequence of the narrowing of the down-converted beams in the very high
