Abstract: The Faculty of Education at the University of Johannesburg, like many other universities worldwide, has a strong focus on first-year experience programmes to promote student academic and social enculturation. Aim: In this article, we report on students’ views of the role of an education excursion as cohesive device. We were particularly interested in how students establish social relationships with peers, and the values they attribute to these connections over time for their incorporation into university. Setting: The education excursion consists of a specially designed curriculum in the two day programme, off campus, as an extension of the initial first year seminar. Methods: Using methods associated with longitudinal studies, we collected data via a biographical survey and questionnaire for first years, followed by dyadic interviews with a purposive sample of students 30 months later. Qualitative content analysis led to several findings..

Hydrothermal stability of Ru/SiO2-C: A promising catalyst for biomass processing through liquid-phase reactions

    Get PDF
In this work, structural and morphological properties of SiO2-C composite material to be used as support for catalysts in the conversion of biomass-derived oxygenated hydrocarbons, such as glycerol, were investigated in liquid water under various temperatures conditions. The results show that this material does not lose surface area, and the hot liquid water does not generate changes in the structure. Neither change in relative concentrations of oxygen functional groups nor in Si/C ratio due to hydrothermal treatment was revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Raman analysis showed that the material is made of a disordered graphitic structure in an amorphous silica matrix, which remains stable after hydrothermal treatment. Results of the hydrogenolysis of glycerol using a Ru/SiO2-C catalyst indicate that the support gives more stability to the active phase than a Ru/SiO2 consisting of commercial silica

Computational modeling of TC0583 as a putative component of the Chlamydia muridarum V-type ATP synthase complex and assessment of its protective capabilities as a vaccine antigen.

Numerous Chlamydia trachomatis proteins have been identified as potential subunit vaccines, of which the major outer-membrane protein (MOMP) has, so far, proven the most efficacious. Recently, subunit A of the V-type ATP synthase (ATPase; TC0582) complex was shown to elicit partial protection against infection. Computational modeling of a neighboring gene revealed a novel subunit of the V-type ATPase (TC0583). To determine if this newly identified subunit could induce protection and/or enhance the partial protection provided by subunit A alone, challenge studies were performed using a combination of these recombinant proteins. The TC0583 subunit alone and concurrently with TC0582, was used to vaccinate BALB/c mice utilizing CpG-1826 and Montanide ISA 720 VG as adjuvants. Vaccinated animals were challenged intranasally with Chlamydia muridarum and the course of the infection was followed. Mice immunized with individual antigens showed minimal alleviation of body weight reduction; however, mice immunized with TC0583 and TC0582 in combination, displayed weight loss levels close to those observed with MOMP. Importantly, immunization with a combination of recombinant subunit proteins reduced chlamydial inclusion forming units by approximately a log-fold. These protection levels support that, these highly conserved Chlamydia proteins, in combination with other antigens, may serve as potential vaccine candidates

Kata Kunci: PJOK; sarana dan prasarana; survei Abstract In the subject of Physical Education, Sports and Health (PJOK), infrastructure is one of the main factors that influence the implementation of teaching and learning activities at school. PJOK itself is learning that the majority of practical material, where when implementing practical material requires facilities and infrastructure that are in accordance with the material in accordance with the applicable KI KD. This study was conducted with the aim of knowing how the availability and condition of PJOK facilities and infrastructure in State Junior High Schools in Probolinggo Regency. The variable in this study is a single variable, namely facilities and infrastructure. This study uses descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The population in this study were 73 State Junior High Schools in Probolinggo Regency, sampling in this study using clusture random sampling technique. The population in this study were public junior high schools in Probolinggo Regency with a sample of 24 schools, in 1 sub-district taking 1 school. Data collection techniques in this study are direct observation and documentary techniques with data collection tools in the form of PDPJOI 2011 instruments. The data analysis technique is in the form of results and categories, using the PDPJOI 2011 instrument which will find the overall average. From the results of the survey of Physical Education Sports and Health infrastructure facilities of State Junior High Schools in Probolinggo Regency, it can be concluded based on the results of data processing.
