The pursuit of happiness has always constituted one of human beings’ main concerns, and even today this task is relevant, as it is part of the essence that constitutes us. What it is that defines happiness has changed over time. The Hellenistic epoch took on the philosophic task of the pursuit of happiness, linking it to concepts related to prudence, moderation or serenity of the soul. In this paper we propose to think over the notion of happiness with which we work in our contemporary society; a contemporaneity defined by the explosion of consumerism, the defense of individualism and a driven technological progress that put sensory pleasure satisfaction in the place of true happiness. But does this hedonism provide complete well-being? If not, is the re-establishment of a responsible hedonism that could reconcile consumerism with a more complete ethic of happiness possible?

These standards are compulsory for European group of listed companies. In this way of accounting harmonisation, the Spanish government decided to reduce the burdens for SMEs and so published two different new General Accounting Plans, one special for SMEs and the other for bigger companies. Because of this, the goal of this paper is to analyse the main differences between both Plans studying both rules. From this analysis we obtain that differences between both are mainly based on the elimination of some rules for registration and valuation and reporting requirements for the financial statements. The reason that is borne in mind is that SMEs are so small that they are not going to do some kind of operations, such as business combinations or equity instruments. JEL codes: M41, M2

MRQAR: A generic MapReduce framework to discover quantitative association rules in big data problems

Many algorithms have emerged to address the discovery of quantitative association rules from datasets in the last years. However, this task is becoming a challenge because the processing power of most existing techniques is not enough to handle the large amount of data generated nowadays. These vast amounts of data are known as Big Data. A number of previous studies have been focused on mining boolean or nominal association rules from Big Data problems, nevertheless, the data in real-world applications usually consist of quantitative values and designing data mining algorithms able to extract quantitative association rules presents a challenge to workers in this research field. In spite of the fact that we can find classical methods to discover boolean or nominal association rules in the most well-known repositories of Big Data algorithms, such repositories do not provide methods to discover quantitative association rules. Indeed, no methodologies have been proposed in the literature without prior discretization in Big Data. Hence, this work proposes MRQAR, a new generic parallel framework to discover quantitative association rules in large amounts of data, designed following the MapReduce paradigm using Apache Spark. MRQAR performs an incremental learning able to run any sequential quantitative association rule algorithm in Big Data problems without needing to redesign such algorithms. As a case study, we have integrated the multiobjective evolutionary algorithm MOPNAR into MRQAR to validate the generic MapReduce framework proposed in this work. The results obtained in the experimental study performed on five Big Data problems prove the capability of MRQAR to obtain reduced set of high quality rules in reasonable time.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2017-89517-PMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2014-55894-C2-1-RMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2017-88209-C2-2-

Modulation of SHBG binding to testosterone and estradiol by sex and morbid obesity.

Objective: Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) binds and transports testosterone and estradiol in plasma. The possibility that SHBG is a mixture of transporting proteins has been postulated. We analyzed in parallel the effects of obesity status on the levels and binding capacity of circulating SHBG and their relationship with testosterone and estradiol.Design: Anthropometric measures and plasma were obtained from apparently healthy young (i.e. 35 +/- 7 years) premenopausal women (n = 32) and men (n = 30), with normal weight and obesity (BMI > 30 kg/m(2)).Methods: SHBG protein (Western blot), as well as the plasma levels of testosterone, estradiol, cortisol and insulin (ELISA) were measured. Specific binding of estradiol and testosterone to plasma SHBG was analyzed using tritiumlabeled hormones. Results: Significant differences in SHBG were observed within the obesity status and gender, with discordant patterns of change in testosterone and estradiol. In men, testosterone occupied most of the binding sites. Estrogen binding was much lower in all subjects. Lower SHBG of morbidly obese (BMI > 40 kg/m(2)) subjects affected testosterone but not estradiol. The ratio of binding sites to SHBG protein levels was constant for testosterone, but not for estradiol. The influence of gender was maximal in morbid obesity, with men showing the highest binding/SHBG ratios. Conclusions: The results reported here are compatible with SHBG being a mixture of at least two functionally different hormone-binding globulins, being affected by obesity and gender and showing different structure, affinities for testosterone and estradiol and also different immunoreactivity

Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, individuals with clonal mosaic events (clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations and/or loss of chromosome Y) showed an increased risk of COVID-19 lethality

    No full text
This report presents a detailed analysis of the noise levels in the practical learning environments of the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia - Villavicencio Campus, where the classrooms that receive the greatest impact produced by the building were selected based on the position of the building. the transit and the properties near it. Therefore, first a study is made of the antecedents that have been presented for the investigation of these levels in affectation both to the health and the cognitive response to the practical learning environments that we evaluate. Consequent to the above, the respective measurements of the study rooms are made, for which timetables are chosen where a greater affectation of the noise levels can be denoted, it starts at a time of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., continues from 12:00 to 14:00 approx. And ending from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., these hours being the most affected during the course of the day by noise, since the daily traffic and the proximity of it is the schedule where there is more traffic. Corresponding to the aforementioned, we proceed with the measurements to the analysis and evaluation of all the recorded data in order to obtain the results that serve us for the study of the noise levels that the building receives in the classrooms, in order of confronting them with the Colombian normativity, of the minimum levels that a building should receive, such as the University1.
