    Vocations as a source of identity: reciprocal relations between Big Five personality traits and RIASEC characteristics

    Although work is a core part of life, the direction of influence from personality to work has typically been conceived as only unidirectional. The present study aims to contribute to the literature by considering reciprocal relations between personality and occupational characteristics, drawing on current perspectives from personality psychology (i.e., the social investment principle) and using a well-established framework to conceptualize career development (i.e., Holland's RIASEC theory). For this purpose, a longitudinal cohort of college alumni (N = 266) was tracked across a substantial and significant period in their professional career. Big Five personality traits and RIASEC occupational characteristics were assessed at the career start and 15 years later when their careers had unfolded. A combination of observed and latent variable analyses were used to disentangle the longitudinal and reciprocal relations between traits and occupational characteristics. Our results indicate that personality shapes and is shaped by our vocational experiences, suggesting that work can be a source of identity. The implications for theory and research on personality in the industrial and organizational literature are discussed alongside a number of practical implications for organizational and counseling settings

    Quality Perceptions and Professional Status: The Impact of Extrinsic Information on Translation Editing

    Si bien es cierto que el conocimiento existente en torno a la calidad en traducción y localización es muy amplio, la cuestión de cómo se percibe esta en relación con factores de tipo extrínseco no lo es tanto. Este artículo presenta algunas posturas existentes en torno a la calidad de la traducción según distintas perspectivas teóricas en el ámbito de los Estudios de Traducción y se centra en observar cómo la información de tipo extrínseco que se proporciona al revisor en torno al estatus profesional del traductor le puede llegar a influir a la hora de llevar a cabo el proceso de corrección de una traducción. En esta línea, el presente artículo detalla los resultados de la segunda parte de un estudio dividido en dos etapas. La primera permitió mostrar cómo los participantes revisores se vieron influidos por factores extrínsecos cuando se les pidió seleccionar la traducción que preferían. Se observó, además, que los factores extrínsecos influyeron en mayor medida en aquellos participantes con menos experiencia. En la segunda parte, detallada a lo largo de este artículo, se solicitó a los participantes que corrigieran e introdujeran modificaciones en las traducciones seleccionadas. Posteriormente, se categorizaron los cambios realizados (en relación con la gramática, la ortografía, el sentido, etc.) a partir de análisis de frecuencia y tablas cruzadas. Algunos de los factores para llevar a cabo la tabulación cruzada incluyeron los niveles de experiencia de los participantes y la información extrínseca sobre el estatus profesional del traductor.While there is a large body of knowledge on quality in translation and localisation, the question of how quality is perceived based on extrinsic factors has so far not been widely investigated. This paper provides some views on translation quality from different theoretical perspectives in the field of Translation Studies and focuses on how extrinsic information on the translators’ professional status influences the edits introduced by reviewers to translations in proofreading. This paper reports primarily on the second part of a two-stage study. In the first stage we found that participants were influenced by extrinsic information when asked to select their preferred translation. This correlation was stronger in participants with less expertise. In the second stage of the study, presented in this paper, we additionally asked participants to proofread and edit the translations they had selected. We then categorised the changes made (grammar, spelling, meaning, etc.) and conducted frequency analysis and cross-tabulation. Factors for cross-tabulations included for example the participants’ level of expertise, and the extrinsic information on the translator’s professional status

    While there is a large body of knowledge on quality in translation and localisation, the question of how quality is perceived based on extrinsic factors has so far not been widely investigated. This paper is focused on how information on the professional status of translators can change the participants’ perception and what attitudes and opinions they have towards a translation based on extrinsic information. This paper provides an overview of translation quality from the academic and industry perspective and offers a detailed description of the experiment carried out. In it, we could observe that those participants with higher levels of expertise were less influenced by extrinsic information than those with lower levels of expertise. We present our results against the background of existing literature on how translation is regarded as a profession and reflect on the connection between this and how quality is perceived in translation and localisation.Si bien es cierto que el conocimiento existente en torno a la calidad en traducción y localización es muy amplio, la cuestión de cómo se percibe esta en relación con factores de tipo extrínseco no lo es tanto. Este artículo se centra en observar cómo la información que se ofrece a los participantes sobre el estatus profesional de los traductores puede cambiar su percepción respecto a la calidad de la traducción, así como en el estudio de las actitudes y opiniones que estos poseen acerca de la traducción a partir de la información de carácter extrínseco proporcionada. En este artículo se repasan algunos de los estudios en torno a la calidad en el ámbito de la traducción desde un punto de vista académico y profesional, y se ofrece una descripción detallada del experimento llevado a cabo. En él, se pudo observar que los factores extrínsecos no influyeron de igual manera en aquellos participantes con más experiencia. Presentamos nuestros resultados en relación con los estudios existentes sobre la percepción de la traducción como profesión, y reflexionamos sobre la conexión entre este hecho y la percepción de la calidad en traducción y localización

    Hector, a fast simulator for the transport of particles in beamlines

    Computing the trajectories of particles in generic beamlines is an important ingredient of experimental particle physics, in particular regarding near-beam detectors. A new tool, Hector, has been built for such calculations, using the transfer matrix approach and energy corrections. The limiting aperture effects are also taken into account. As an illustration, the tool was used to simulate the LHC beamlines, in particular around the high luminosity interaction points (IPs), and validated with results of the Mad-X simulator. The LHC beam profiles, trajectories and beta functions are presented. Assuming certain forward proton detector scenarios around the IP5, acceptance plots, irradiation doses and chromaticity grids are produced. Furthermore, the reconstruction of proton kinematic variables at the IP (energy and angle) is studied as well as the impact of the misalignment of beamline elements.Comment: 40 pages, 20 figures; added references, corrected typos ; submitted to JINS
