    Cytolytic T lymphocyte precursors (CTL-P) were sensitized in vivo by intraplantar infection of C57BL/6 mice with a lethal dose of rabies virus, strain ERA (ERA). As a result of sensitization CTL-P matured to interleukin-receptive CTL-P (IL-CTL-P) that could be expanded in vitro to Thy-1+, Lyt-2+ CTL clones in the presence of IL without subjection to antigen-driven selection. After infection with ERA, IL-CTL-P-derived CTL lysed fibroblasts infected with rabies virus but not those infected with another rhabdovirus, the vesicular stomatitis virus. These CTL, however, did not discriminate between fibroblasts infected with the serologically closely related laboratory strains of classic rabies virus, ERA and HEP-Flury, and the serologically distinct rabies-related African isolate Mokola. This finding implies that in vivo sensitized IL-CTL-P recognize common genus-specific determinants expressed on cells infected with members of the lyssavirus genus

    Toarcian oceanic anoxic event: An assessment of global causes using belemnite C isotope records

    Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain simultaneous large negative excursions (up to 7% PeeDee belemnite) in bulk carbonate (delta(13)C(carb)) and organic carbon isotope records (delta(13)C(org)) from black shales marking the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE). The first explanation envisions recycling of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) with a light isotopic signature into the photic zone from the lower levels of a salinity-stratified water mass, essentially requiring a regional paleoceanographic driver of the carbon cycle. The second involves the rapid and massive dissociation of methane from gas hydrates that effectively renders the T-OAE a global perturbation of the carbon cycle. We present C isotope records from belemnites (delta(13)C(bel)) sampled from two localities, calibrated with high-resolution ammonite biostratigraphy and Sr isotope stratigraphy, in Yorkshire (England) and Dotternhausen (Germany), that can be used to assess which model best explains the observed changes in carbon isotopes. Our records of the delta(13)C composition of belemnite calcite do not show the large negative C isotope excursions shown by coeval records of delta(13)C in sedimentary organic matter or bulk sedimentary carbonate. It follows that isotopically light carbon cannot have dominated the ocean-atmosphere carbon reservoir during the Toarcian OAE, as would be required were the methane release hypothesis correct. On the basis of an evaluation of available carbon isotope records we discuss a model in which the recycling of DIC from the deeper levels of a stratified water body, and shallowing of anoxic conditions into the photic zone, can explain all isotopic profiles. In particular, the model accounts for the higher C isotope values of belemnites that are characteristic of open ocean, well-mixed conditions, and the lower C isotope values of neritic phytoplankton communities that recorded the degree of density stratification and shallowing of anoxia in the photic zone

Financial services and products are available to customers almost everywhere through a multitude of alternative channels: phone, the Internet, automated teller machines, and so on. From a technological point of view the problem is to design, build and maintain a coherent information system (IS) infrastructure. Unfortunately, the “perfect” IS architecture remains an ever-moving target. Nevertheless recent developments in information system modelling (i.e. the Unified Modelling Language concepts) could give a valuable answer to crucial problems like the need to achieve and preserve long-run firm\u27s adaptability to the technological developments and new business challenges. At the same time the model helps in building a coherent picture of the virtual bank and its delivery channels

    Calibration of Mg/Ca thermometry in planktonic foraminifera from a sediment trap time series

    Paired Mg/Ca and δ18O measurements on planktonic foraminiferal species (G. ruber white, G. ruber pink, G. sacculifer, G. conglobatus, G. aequilateralis, O. universa, N. dutertrei, P. obliquiloculata, G. inflata, G. truncatulinoides, G. hirsuta, and G. crassaformis) from a 6-year sediment trap time series in the Sargasso Sea were used to define the sensitivity of foraminiferal Mg/Ca to calcification temperature. Habitat depths and calcification temperatures were estimated from comparison of δ18O of foraminifera with equilibrium calcite, based on historical temperature and salinity data. When considered together, Mg/Ca (mmol/mol) of all species, except two, show a significant (r = 0.93) relationship with temperature (T °C) of the form Mg/Ca = 0.38 (±0.02) exp 0.090 (±0.003)T, equivalent to a 9.0 ± 0.3% change in Mg/Ca for a 1°C change in temperature. Small differences exist in calibrations between species and between different size fractions of the same species. O. universa and G. aequilateralis have higher Mg/Ca than other species, and in general, data can be best described with the same temperature sensitivity for all species and pre-exponential constants in the sequence O. universa > G. aequilateralis ≈ G. bulloides > G. ruber ≈ G. sacculifer ≈ other species. This approach gives an accuracy of ±1.2°C in the estimation of calcification temperature. The ∼9% sensitivity to temperature is similar to published studies from culture and core top calibrations, but differences exist from some literature values of pre-exponential constants. Different cleaning methodologies and artefacts of core top dissolution are probably implicated, and perhaps environmental factors yet understood. Planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca temperature estimates can be used for reconstructing surface temperatures and mixed and thermocline temperatures (using G. ruber pink, G. ruber white, G. sacculifer, N. dutertrei, P. obliquiloculata, etc.). The existence of a single Mg thermometry equation is valuable for extinct species, although use of species-specific equations will, where statistically significant, provide more accurate evaluation of Mg/Ca paleotemperature

    Observational Signatures of Simulated Reconnection Events in the Solar Chromosphere and Transition Region

    We present the results of numerical simulations of wave-induced magnetic reconnection in a model of the solar atmosphere. In the magnetic field geometry we study in this article, the waves, driven by a monochromatic piston and a driver taken from Hinode observations, induce periodic reconnection of the magnetic field, and this reconnection appears to help drive long-period chromospheric jets. By synthesizing observations for a variety of wavelengths that are sensitive to a wide range of temperatures, we shed light on the often confusing relationship between the plethora of jet-like phenomena in the solar atmosphere, e.g., explosive events, spicules, blinkers, and other phenomena thought to be caused by reconnection.Comment: 13 pages, 22 figures.
