    Conceptual Design of Superferric Magnets for PS2

    We analyze feasibility and cost of a superferric magnet design for the PS2, the 50 GeV ring that should replace the PS in the CERN injector chain. Specifically, we provide the conceptual design of dipole and quadrupoles, including considerations on cryogenics and powering. The magnets have warm iron yoke, and cryostated superconducting coils embedded in the magnet, which reduces AC loss at cryogenic temperature. The superconductor has large operating margin to endure beam loss and operating loads over a long period of time. Although conservative, and without any critical dependence on novel technology developments, this superconducting option appears to be attractive as a low-power alternative to the normal-conducting magnets that are the present baseline for the PS2 design. In addition it provides flexibility in the selection of flat-top duration at no additional cost

    The challenge of return to work in workers with cancer : employer priorities despite variation in social policies related to work and health

    This study explored employer's perspectives on (1) their experience of good practice related to workers diagnosed with cancer and their return to work (RTW), and (2) their perceived needs necessary to achieve good practice as reported by employers from nine separate countries. Twenty-five semi-structured interviews were held in eight European countries and Israel with two to three employers typically including HR managers or line managers from both profit and non-profit organisations of different sizes and sectors. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. A grounded theory/thematic analysis approach was completed. Employers' experience with RTW assistance for workers with cancer appears to be a dynamic process. Results indicate that good practice includes six phases: (1) reacting to disclosure, (2) collecting information, (3) decision-making related to initial actions, (4) remaining in touch, (5) decision-making on RTW, and (6) follow-up. The exact details of the process are shaped by country, employer type, and worker characteristics; however, there was consistency related to the need for (1) structured procedures, (2) collaboration, (3) communication skills training, (4) information on cancer, and (5) financial resources for realizing RTW support measures. Notwithstanding variations at country, employer, and worker levels, the employers from all nine countries reported that good practice regarding RTW assistance in workers with a history of cancer consists of the six phases above. Employers indicate that they would benefit from shared collaboration and resources that support good practice for this human resource matter. Further research and development based on the six phases of employer support as a framework for a tool or strategy to support workers with a history of cancer across countries and organisations is warranted

    CERN West Area neutrino facility beam line alignment

    This papers describes the alignment of the West Area Neutrino Beam Line at CERN to the two neutrino experiments CHORUS and NOMAD. The T9 neutrino (n) target position and the position of the magnetic horn were optimised using the secondary muon intensity profiles from the muon pits in the shielding. In the experiments the improved geometry provides a better centred beam (< 5 cm) and a measured increase in the n flux of 8%

    Quality Control Techniques Applied to the Large Scale Production of Superconducting Dipole Magnets for LHC

    The LHC accelerator, under construction at CERN, is characterized by the use on a large scale of high field superconducting dipoles: the 27-km ring requires 1232 15-m long dipole magnets designed for a peak field of 9 T. The coils are wound with Rutherford-type cable based on copper-stabilized Nb-Ti superconductors and will be operated at 1.9 K in pressurized superfluid helium. The challenge that had to be faced has been an efficient, cost-effective and reproducible mass production to very tight tolerances: the field quality must be better than 10-4 and the geometry of the cold bore tube and magnet controlled to 0.1 mm over the whole length, any deviation being liable to induce delays and significant cost increase. This paper presents the main methods and tools chosen to face successfully this challenge: some methods were foreseen in the technical specification, others were implemented based on the experience gained in several years of fabrication

    Long-Read Sequencing to Unravel Complex Structural Variants of CEP78 Leading to Cone-Rod Dystrophy and Hearing Loss

    Inactivating variants as well as a missense variant in the centrosomal CEP78 gene have been identified in autosomal recessive cone-rod dystrophy with hearing loss (CRDHL), a rare syndromic inherited retinal disease distinct from Usher syndrome. Apart from this, a complex structural variant (SV) implicating CEP78 has been reported in CRDHL. Here we aimed to expand the genetic architecture of typical CRDHL by the identification of complex SVs of the CEP78 region and characterization of their underlying mechanisms. Approaches used for the identification of the SVs are shallow whole-genome sequencing (sWGS) combined with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and long-range PCR, or ExomeDepth analysis on whole-exome sequencing (WES) data. Targeted or whole-genome nanopore long-read sequencing (LRS) was used to delineate breakpoint junctions at the nucleotide level. For all SVs cases, the effect of the SVs on CEP78 expression was assessed using quantitative PCR on patient-derived RNA. Apart from two novel canonical CEP78 splice variants and a frameshifting single-nucleotide variant (SNV), two SVs affecting CEP78 were identified in three unrelated individuals with CRDHL: a heterozygous total gene deletion of 235 kb and a partial gene deletion of 15 kb in a heterozygous and homozygous state, respectively. Assessment of the molecular consequences of the SVs on patient’s materials displayed a loss-of-function effect. Delineation and characterization of the 15-kb deletion using targeted LRS revealed the previously described complex CEP78 SV, suggestive of a recurrent genomic rearrangement. A founder haplotype was demonstrated for the latter SV in cases of Belgian and British origin, respectively. The novel 235-kb deletion was delineated using whole-genome LRS. Breakpoint analysis showed microhomology and pointed to a replication-based underlying mechanism. Moreover, data mining of bulk and single-cell human and mouse transcriptional datasets, together with CEP78 immunostaining on human retina, linked the CEP78 expression domain with its phenotypic manifestations. Overall, this study supports that the CEP78 locus is prone to distinct SVs and that SV analysis should be considered in a genetic workup of CRDHL. Finally, it demonstrated the power of sWGS and both targeted and whole-genome LRS in identifying and characterizing complex SVs in patients with ocular diseases

    Barriers to and Facilitators of Sustained Employment:A Qualitative Study of Experiences in Dutch Patients With CKD

    Rationale & Objective: Although patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at risk for work disability and loss of employment, not all experience work disruption. We aimed to describe the barriers to and facilitators of sustained employment experienced by Dutch patients with CKD. Study Design: Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. Setting & Participants: 27 patients with CKD glomerular filtration rate categories 3b-5 (G3b-G5) from 4 nephrology outpatient clinics in The Netherlands. Analytical Approach: Content analyses with constant comparison of interview data based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework. Results: Participants were 6 patients with CKD G3b-G4, 8 patients receiving maintenance dialysis, and 13 patients with functioning kidney transplants. We identified health-related barriers (symptoms, physical toll of dialysis/transplantation, limited work capacity) and facilitators (few physical symptoms, successful posttransplantation recovery, absence of comorbidities, good physical condition), personal barriers (psychological impact, limited work experience) and facilitators (positive disposition, job satisfaction, work attitude, person-job fit), and environmental barriers and facilitators. Environmental barriers were related to nephrology care (waiting time, use of a hemodialysis catheter) and work context (reorganization, temporary contract, working hours, physical demands); environmental facilitators were related to nephrology care (personalized dialysis, preemptive transplant), work context (large employer, social climate, job requiring mental rather than physical labor, flexible working hours, adjustment of work tasks, reduced hours, remote working, support at work, peritoneal dialysis exchange facility), and support at home. Occupational health services and social security could be barriers or facilitators. Limitations: The study sample of Dutch patients may limit the transferability of these findings to other countries. Conclusions: The wide range of barriers and facilitators in all International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health components suggests great diversity among patients and their circumstances. These findings underline the importance of personalized nephrology and occupational health care as well as the importance of individually tailored workplace accommodations to promote sustained employment for patients with CKD

    Consumption of fruits and vegetables and cardiovascular mortality in renal transplant recipients:A prospective cohort study

    Background It currently remains understudied whether low consumption of fruits and vegetables after kidney transplantation may be a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor. We aimed to investigate the associations between consumption of fruits and vegetables and cardiovascular mortality in renal transplant recipients (RTRs). Methods Consumption of fruits and vegetables was assessed in an extensively phenotyping cohort of RTRs. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed to assess the risk of cardiovascular mortality. Results We included 400 RTRs (age 5212 years, 54% males). At a median follow-up of 7.2years, 23% of RTRs died (53% were due to cardiovascular causes). Overall, fruit consumption was not associated with cardiovascular mortality {hazard ratio [HR] 0.82 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.60-1.14]; P = 0.24}, whereas vegetable consumption was inversely associated with cardiovascular mortality [HR 0.49 (95% CI 0.34-0.71); P 45mL/min/1.73 m(2) [HR 0.56 (95% CI 0.35-0.92); P = 0.02] or the absence of proteinuria [HR 0.62 (95% CI 0.41-0.92); P = 0.02]. Conclusions In RTRs, a relatively higher vegetable consumption is independently and strongly associated with lower cardiovascular mortality. A relatively higher fruit consumption is also associated with lower cardiovascular mortality, although particularly in RTRs with eGFR>45mL/min/1.73 m(2) or an absence of proteinuria. Further studies seem warranted to investigate whether increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables may open opportunities for potential interventional pathways to decrease the burden of cardiovascular mortality in RTRs.Dutch Kidney Foundation: C00.187

    High intensity proton beams in a multi-cycled SPS

    The SPS ran for 247 days during 1994; 64% of this was with high intensity proton beam for physics data taking in the Fixed Target mode of operation, 12% was for a lead run at the end of the year, with the remaining 24% spent in setting up and machine development. The SPS supplied LEP with 8 bunches of electrons and 8 bunches of positrons either in the 14.4 or 19.2 seconds interleaved cycling mode during the operation with protons or lead ions respectively. The new record peak intensity during the year was 3.9x1013 protons per pulse at 450GeV. A total of 11x1018 proton were delivered to all targets, with an overall average during physics of 2.5x1013 protons per pulse at 450GeV. Some 6x1018 protons were delivered to both neutrino experiments
