    Uremic lung: The “calcified cauliflower” sign in the end stage renal disease

    AbstractMetastatic pulmonary calcification (MPC) is a rare pathological condition consisting of lung calcium salt deposits which commonly occurs in patients affected by chronic kidney disease probably for some abnormalities in calcium and phosphate metabolism. CT represents the technique of choice for detecting MPC findings including ground glass opacities and partially calcified nodules or consolidations. We present a case of MCP in a patient affected by hepato-renal autosomic-dominant polycystic disease; chest CT revealed extensive lobar-segmental parenchymal calcification with a peculiar cauliflower shape which we called “calcified cauliflower” sign. The “calcified cauliflower” sign can be reported as a new CT pattern of uremic lung that needs to be identified for a correct diagnosis and patient management

    Merger of compact stars in the two-families scenario

    We analyse the phenomenological implications of the two-families scenario on the merger of compact stars. That scenario is based on the coexistence of both hadronic stars and strange quark stars. After discussing the classification of the possible mergers, we turn to detailed numerical simulations of the merger of two hadronic stars, i.e., "first family" stars in which delta resonances and hyperons are present, and we show results for the threshold mass of such binaries, for the mass dynamically ejected and the mass of the disk surrounding the post-merger object. We compare these results with those obtained within the one-family scenario and we conclude that relevant signatures of the two-families scenario can be suggested, in particular: the possibility of a rapid collapse to a black hole for masses even smaller than the ones associated to GW170817; during the first milliseconds, oscillations of the postmerger remnant at frequencies higher than the ones obtained in the one-family scenario; a large value of the mass dynamically ejected and a small mass of the disk, for binaries of low total mass. Finally, based on a population synthesis analysis, we present estimates of the number of mergers for: two hadronic stars; hadronic star - strange quark star; two strange quark stars. We show that for unequal mass systems and intermediate values of the total mass, the merger of a hadronic star and a strange quark star is very likely (GW170817 has a possible interpretation into this category of mergers). On the other hand, mergers of two strange quark stars are strongly suppressed.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figure

    Relationship and predictive role of the dual expression of FGFR and IL-8 in metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with targeted agents

    Background/Aim: The expression of IL-8 and FGFR has been related to prognosis and pathological features in renal cell carcinoma. We investigated the relationship between IL-8 and FGFR and the outcome in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) patients. Materials and Methods: Clinical data and histological samples of patients affected by mRCC and treated with targeted agents were reviewed. The expression of proteins was assessed using immunohistochemistry. Results: FGFR1, FGFR2, and IL-8 were found to be expressed in 16%, 30%, and 50% of cases, respectively. Significant correlations were found between selected proteins. A lack of expression of FGFR2 and IL8 was found to be correlated with increased progression-free survival (PFS). The survival rate at 24 months was 44%, 38%, and 79% of those expressing both, one, or none of the evaluated proteins, respectively (p=0.047). Conclusion: This analysis found a relationship between the expression of IL-8 and FGFR2 in mRCC patients treated with targeted agents

    Embedded systems such as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are typically designed as a network of multiple interacting elements with physical input (or sensors) and output (or actuators). One aspect of interest of open systems is fidelity, or the compliance between physical figures of interest and their internal representation. High fidelity is defined as a stable mapping between actions in the physical domain and intended or expected values in the system domain and deviations from fidelity are quantifiable over time by some appropriate informative variable. In this paper, we provide a model for designing such systems based on a framework for trustworthiness monitoring and we provide a Jason implementation to evaluate the feasibility of our approach. In particular, we build a bridge between a standard publish/subscribe framework for CPS called MQTT and Jason to enable automatic reasoning about trustworthines

    On the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the Italian Unification, the discovery of some letters by Giuseppe Garibaldi - referring to a period of thermal treatments at the Baths in Civitavecchia (Rome) - gave us the opportunity for writing a commentary about a not well known experience in the Two World Hero's life: the numerous treatments carried out at many Italian spa centres for treating a rheumatic pathology (probably a rheumatoid polyarthritis) and the outcomes of various war wounds, especially the famous gunshot-wound in his right ankle during the Battle of Aspromonte, in 1862

    Solar Assisted Ground Source Heat Pump in Cold Climates

    Abstract The geothermal heat pump (or ground source heat pump) uses the ground as heat source or sink for heating and cooling respectively. The design of the borehole field is the key element of these systems since the wrong evaluation of the boreholes' length affects the initial costs and/or the energy performance of the heat pump. The geothermal heat pumps are considered as renewable energy technologies, consequently can help the community to reduce the primary energy uses and also the CO 2 emissions. However the sustainability and efficiency are ensured in the long period only when the heat balance through the ground is guaranteed. This work evaluates the thermal behavior of ground source heat pumps in cold climates, where the thermal load profile of buildings is not balanced between heating and cooling, especially in residential sector characterized by low internal loads. In these contexts, the heat pump mainly works in heating mode, extracting continuously heat from the ground. As a result, the ground temperature decreases gradually during the years affecting the energy performance of the heat pump. A possible solution to this problem is to use solar thermal collectors to stabilize or gradually increase the mean ground temperature (these systems are called Solar Assisted Ground Source Heat Pump – SAGSHP). In this work a multi floors residential building with 12 flats (88 m 2 each) is analyzed in three climate zones, making use of the simulation tool TRNSYS. Different configurations of the plant system have been investigated and the case without the solar thermal collectors has been considered as reference

    Comfort and perceived air quality in refurbished social houses with mechanical ventialtion system: The impact of occupants behaviour

    Abstract The ever-growing demand for a better indoor air quality in residential buildings is increasing the number of whole-house ventilation system installations in new constructions and renovation. In Italy, for residential sector, the national code does not prescribe the use of mechanical ventilation (MV) systems, so their installation is left to the choice of house owners. Two three-storey social housing apartment blocks in Northern Italy were studied. To reduce energy consumption, building envelopes as well as heating systems were refurbished. The thermal insulation was increased and the existing gas heater units were replaced with more efficient radiant ceiling systems. The refurbishment measures were the same for both constructions beside the MV system, which was installed in only one building. Indoor temperature and relative humidity were monitored for several apartments during the heating season. The occupants were surveyed to investigate their thermal comfort and perceived air quality. The occupants were interviewed to better understand their responses, and to know how they operate the heating system and the mechanical ventilation system (when present). Survey results show that there are no differences in terms of thermal comfort and perceived air quality between the occupants of the buildings with and without MV systems.
