    A better communicator is always a better scientist, or the reason why every PhD student should engage in science outreach

    The ability to communicate with all audiences is a skill that is rapidly becoming a must-have for any future scientist. As more physicists engage in communicating science to non-expert audiences, research shows that this experience helps them to get a better understanding of their own research and the impact on society, improves the perception of science by lay audiences and can also become an area of personal growth as a citizen. A recent deployment of a PhD student to the Amundsen Scott South Pole Station, as part of the IceCube Collaboration, provided a ready opportunity to spark interest. We present results of the efforts made by the Universit\'e libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Interuniversity Institute for High Energies, IIHE (ULB-VUB), to introduce Belgian students and citizens to science and the life of a scientist. The essential parts of this program will be identified to show why the contributions of a PhD student to the organization of these activities are beneficial to the development of new skills as a scientist, but also to broaden the audiences and the impact of the local university and/or the specific research outreach program.Comment: Submitted to the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2017, Busan, South Korea

    Cartoons as interdiscourse : a quali-quantitative analysis of social representations based on collective imagination in cartoons produced after the Charlie Hebdo attack

    The attacks against Charlie Hebdo in Paris at the beginning of the year 2015 urged many cartoonists – most professionals but some laymen as well – to create cartoons as a reaction to this tragedy. The main goal of this article is to show how traumatic events like this one can converge in a rather limited set of metaphors, ranging from easily recognizable topoi to rather vague interdiscourses that circulate in contemporary societies. To do so, we analyzed 450 cartoons that were produced as a reaction to the Charlie Hebdo attacks, and took a quali-quantitative approach that draws both on discourse analysis and semiotics. In this paper, we identified eight main themes and we analyzed the five ones which are anchored in collective imagination (the pen against the sword, the journalist as a modern hero, etc.). Then, we studied the cartoons at figurative, narrative and thematic levels thanks to Greimas’ model of the semiotic square. This paper shows the ways in which these cartoons build upon a memory-based network of events from the recent past (particularly 9/11), and more generally on a collective imagination which can be linked to Western values.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Potential of Incorporation of Antimicrobial Plant Phenolics Into Polyolefin-Based Food Contact Materials to Produce Active Packaging by Melt-Blending: Proof of Concept With Isobutyl-4-Hydroxybenzoate

    There is an increasing interest for active food packaging incorporated with natural antimicrobial agents rather than synthetic preservatives. However, most of plastics for direct contact with food are made of polyolefins, usually processed by extrusion, injection, or blow-molding methods while most of natural antimicrobial molecules are thermolabile compounds (e.g., essential oils). Therefore, addition of plant phenolics (with low volatility) to different polyolefins might be promising to design active controlled release packaging processed by usual plastic compounding and used for direct contact with food products. Therefore, up to 2% (wt/wt) of isobutyl-4-hydroxybenzoate (IBHB) was mixed with 3 polyolefins: EVA poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate), LLDPE (Linear Low Density Polyethylene), and PP (PolyPropylene) by melt-blending from 75 to 170°C and then pelletized in order to prepare heat-pressed films. IBHB was chosen as an antibacterial phenolic active model molecule against Staphylococcus aureus to challenge the entire processing. Antibacterial activity of films against S. aureus (procedure adapted from ISO 22196 standard) were 4, 6, and 1 decimal reductions in 24 h for EVA, LLDPE, and PP films, respectively, demonstrating the preservation of the antibacterial activity after melt processing. For food contact materials, the efficacy of antimicrobial packaging depends on the release of the antimicrobial molecules. Therefore, the three types of films were placed at 23°C in 95% (v/v) ethanol and the release rates of IBHB were monitored: 101 ± 1%, 32 ± 7%, and 72 ± 9% at apparent equilibrium for EVA, LLDPE, and PP films, respectively. The apparent diffusion coefficients of IBHB in EVA and PP films were 2.8 ± 0.3 × 10−12 and 4.0 ± 1.0 × 10−16 m2s−1. For LLDPE films, IBHB crystals were observed on the surface of films by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy): this blooming effect was due the partial incompatibility of IBHB in LLDPE and its fast diffusion out of the polymer matrix onto the film surface. In conclusion, none of these three materials was suitable for a relevant controlled release packaging targeting the preservation of fresh food, but a combination of two of them is promising by the design of a multilayer packaging: the release could result from permeation through an inner PE layer combined with an EVA one acting as a reservoir

    Reactions to Brexit in images : a multimodal content analysis of shared visual content on Flickr

    In this article, the authors analyze citizens’ reactions to Brexit on social media after the referendum results by performing a content analysis of 5877 posts collected from the social media platform Flickr, written in English, German, French, Spanish or Italian. Their research aims to answer the three following questions: What multimodal practices are adopted by citizens when they react to societal events like Brexit? To what extent do these practices illustrate types of citizenship that are specific to social networks? Can we observe different reactions to Brexit according to the languages used by the citizens? The authors focus on the types of visual content the citizens used to react to Brexit, as well as on what types of social relations this content can particularly create between their authors and the other members of the Flick community. Their article also highlights to what extent these posts shared on Flickr show content that is in favour of, or against, Brexit

    Modular cell-based platform for high throughput identification of compounds that inhibit a viral interferon antagonist of choice

Viral IFN antagonists are often multifunctional proteins that perform vital roles in virus replication beyond IFN antagonism. The critical importance of viral IFN antagonists is highlighted by the fact that almost all viruses encode one of these proteins. Inhibition of viral IFN antagonists has the potential to exert pleiotropic antiviral effects and thus this important protein class represents a diverse plethora of novel therapeutic targets. To exploit this, we have successfully developed and executed a novel modular cell-based platform that facilitates the safe and rapid screening for inhibitors of a viral IFN antagonist of choice. The platform is based on two reporter cell-lines that provide a simple method to detect activation of IFN induction or signaling via an eGFP gene placed under the control of the IFNÎČ or an ISRE-containing promoter, respectively. Expression of a target IFN antagonist in the appropriate reporter cell-line will block the IFN response and hence eGFP expression. We hypothesized that addition of a compound that inhibits IFN antagonist function will release the block imposed on the IFN response and hence restore eGFP expression, providing a measurable parameter for high throughput screening (HTS). We demonstrate assay proof-of-concept by (i) exploiting hepatitis C virus (HCV) protease inhibitors to inhibit NS3-4A's capacity to block IFN induction and (ii) successfully executing two HTS targeting viral IFN antagonists that block IFN signaling; NS2 and IE1 from human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) respectively, two clinically important viruses for which vaccine development has thus far been unsuccessful and new antivirals are required. Both screens performed robustly and Zâ€Č Factor scores of >0.6 were achieved. We identified (i) four hit compounds that specifically inhibit RSV NS2's ability to block IFN signaling by mediating STAT2 degradation and exhibit modest antiviral activity and (ii) two hit compounds that interfere with IE1 transcription and significantly impair CMV replication. Overall, we demonstrate assay proof-of-concept as we target viral IFN antagonists from unrelated viruses and demonstrate its suitability for HTS.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Identification of heavy-flavour jets with the CMS detector in pp collisions at 13 TeV

    Many measurements and searches for physics beyond the standard model at the LHC rely on the efficient identification of heavy-flavour jets, i.e. jets originating from bottom or charm quarks. In this paper, the discriminating variables and the algorithms used for heavy-flavour jet identification during the first years of operation of the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, are presented. Heavy-flavour jet identification algorithms have been improved compared to those used previously at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. For jets with transverse momenta in the range expected in simulated tt‟\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}} events, these new developments result in an efficiency of 68% for the correct identification of a b jet for a probability of 1% of misidentifying a light-flavour jet. The improvement in relative efficiency at this misidentification probability is about 15%, compared to previous CMS algorithms. In addition, for the first time algorithms have been developed to identify jets containing two b hadrons in Lorentz-boosted event topologies, as well as to tag c jets. The large data sample recorded in 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV has also allowed the development of new methods to measure the efficiency and misidentification probability of heavy-flavour jet identification algorithms. The heavy-flavour jet identification efficiency is measured with a precision of a few per cent at moderate jet transverse momenta (between 30 and 300 GeV) and about 5% at the highest jet transverse momenta (between 500 and 1000 GeV)
