Subversive blood ties: gothic decadence in three characters from murnau's and coppola's renderings of bram stoker's dracula

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2013Esta dissertação consiste em investigar a construção do tema da decadência Gótica em Drácula de Bram Stoker e duas adaptações fílmicas do romance - Nosferatu, de Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, e Drácula de Bram Stoker, de Francis Ford Coppola - tendo como centro da análise como três personagens - Drácula, Jonathan Harker e Mina Harker - se relacionam com tal tema. A decadência Gótica é um padrão literário do contexto fin-de-siècle da sociedade vitoriana inspirada pela crise social que acontecia na Inglaterra no fim do século XIX (Punter e Byron 39-40). Autores como Bram Stoker escreveram histórias que refletiam medos morais e sociais da sociedade vitoriana, retratando imagens de monstros que representavam a transgressão de fronteiras morais e sexuais estabelecidas pelas tradições vitorianas (Botting 88). Tendo tal discussão em mente, este estudo busca conectar a retratação de tal tema do romance às adaptações, também utilizando uma análise fílmica para identificar técnicas que destacam a representação do tema relacionado aos três personagens, finalmente ligando tal tema a crises e confusões sociais que aconteciam nos contextos de ambos os filmes.Abstract : The present dissertation consists of an investigation of the construction of the Gothic theme of decadence in Bram Stoker's Dracula and two film adaptations of the novel - Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Nosferatu and Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula - having as the centre of analysis how three characters - Dracula, Jonathan Harker and Mina Harker - relate to that theme. The Gothic decadence is a literary motif from the fin-de-siècle context of the Victorian Era inspired by the social crisis that took place in England in the late nineteenth century (Punter and Byron 39-40). Authors like Bram Stoker wrote stories that reflected moral and social fears of the Victorian society, depicting images of monsters that represented the crossing of moral and sexual boundaries established by the Victorian traditions (Botting 88). Bearing that discussion in mind, this study aims at connecting the portrayal of such a theme from novel to the two adaptations, also making use of a filmic analysis to identify techniques that highlight the depiction of the theme related to the three characters, ultimately linking such a thematic depiction to crises and social commotions that were taking place in both films' social contexts

Matriz curricular e extensão universitária: o caso do projeto Rondon em um curso de graduação do campo de públicas

Trabalho apresentado no II Congresso Nacional do PROJETO RONDON, realizado em Florianópolis, SC, no período de 23 a 25 de setembro de 2015 - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.O objetivo deste artigo é problematizar o alinhamento da matriz curricular de um curso do Campo de Públicas à extensão universitária, usando como objeto de análise o Projeto Rondon. Por meio de um Estudo de Caso Descritivo (Yin, 2005) analisa-se por meio de uma análise documental e entrevistas em profundidade com discentes autores da proposta aprovada no edital do Projeto Rondon (Janeiro 2015)a aderência do conteúdo técnico e profissional no curso de graduação de uma instituição de ensino superior pública federal às demandas do mercado de trabalho - especificamente temas relacionados à Saúde, Educação, Cultura, Direitos Humanos e Justiça. Os resultados apresentados neste artigo evidenciam a importância dos elementos presentes matrizes curriculares do curso analisado na construção de ações que fomentem a implementação de políticas públicas em temas relacionados à Saúde, Educação, Cultura, Direitos Humanos e Justiça, aproximando o futuro profissional ao campo de trabalho

Monitoring of dynamin during the Toxoplasma gondii cell cycle

The obligate intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii actively invades virtually all warm-blooded nucleated cells. This process results in a non-fusogenic vacuole, inside which the parasites replicate continuously until egress signaling is triggered. In this work, we investigated the role of the large GTPase dynamin in the interaction of T. gondii with the host cell by using laser and electron microscopy during three key stages: invasion, development and egress. The detection of dynamin during invasion indicates the occurrence of endocytosis, while T. gondii egress appeared to be independent of dynamin participation. However, the presence of dynamin during T. gondii development suggests that this molecule plays undescribed roles in the tachyzoite's cell cycle

A monstrous appendage : British Library MS Harley 2799, f. 243 and the illustrated De portentis

O presente artigo pretende analisar e contextualizar a galeria de espécimes monstruosos que preenche o fólio 243 do segundo volume do códice vulgarmente denominado Bíblia de Arnstein. Este manuscrito (Londres, Biblioteca Britânica, MS Harley 2799) foi produzido na Renânia durante a década de 1170 e enquadra o material que nos concerne no âmbito de uma série de apêndices 'marginais' de temática geográfica, cosmológica e computística congregados no início e no fim do volume. Através de uma comparação entre este reportório e os programas iconográficos que acompanham o tratado De portentis na tradição Isidoro-Rabaniana -nomeadamente nos códices Casiniensis 132 da Biblioteca Abacial de Montecassino e Pal. lat. 291 da Biblioteca Apostólica Vaticana- procurar-se-á demonstrar que o material isolado no último fólio da Bíblia de Arnstein não configura uma criação ad hoc, e muito menos uma curiosidade ociosa, mas enquadra-se numa velha e venerável genealogia textual e pictórica com firmes raízes no imaginário medieval. Concomitantemente, procurar-se-á explorar as condições e motivações que explicam o reenquadramento deste corpus na periferia de um texto alógeno, e esboçar algumas das razões que podem ter atendido à sua 'reinvenção'neste contexto específico.This paper seeks to explore and contextualise the gallery of monstrous peoples occurring in f. 243 of London, British Library MS Harley 2799 (the second volume of the so-called Arnstein Bible, produced in the Rhineland around 1170 and comprising several addenda of geographical, cosmological and computistical interest). A comparison between these drawings and the pictorial programmes accompanying section VII.7 of Hrabanus Maurus' De universo (the tract independently known as De portentis) reveals that the material isolated in the Harley manuscript is not an ad hoc creation, but part of a far-reaching and deeply-rooted genealogy of texts and images. Careful analysis of this material in light of the pictorial evidence afforded by the two extant examples of Hrabanus' De universo -Montecassino Abbey Library Cod. Casiniensis 132 and Rome, Biblioteca Vaticana Cod. Pal. lat. 291- can thus shed new light on both the Harley composition and the illustration of the corresponding Isidorian-Hrabanian tract. Concomitantly, it will be argued, its re-contextualisation on the 'outer edges' of a Bible manuscript is in itself a significant testimony to the versatility of this legendary, and to its enduring grasp on the medieval imagination

The historical and epistemological development of epidemiology and the concept of risk

O raciocínio estatístico nas práticas de saúde foi disseminado pela Epidemiologia e é amplamente utilizado em todas as suas áreas de conhecimento. O objetivo deste artigo é revisitar o desenvolvimento histórico da Epidemiologia e a formalização do conceito de risco, responsável pelo uso da chance estatística como parte do raciocínio causal nas ciências da saúde. O período de estudo abrange os anos de 1872 a 1965 e sua base documental é constituída por trabalhos de periódicos científicos relacionados à construção do campo epidemiológico e outras publicações científicas. Foram identificadas três etapas de desenvolvimento da Epidemiologia: Epidemiologia da Constituição, Epidemiologia da Exposição e Epidemiologia do Risco, discutindo-se aspectos epistemológicos e sociossanitários que permitem compreender cada uma delas sob um ponto de vista histórico. Destaca-se a importância da reflexão crítica sobre a ciência epidemiológica e as suas relações com as práticas de saúde, de saúde pública em particular, para aperfeiçoar seu uso atual e propiciar sua constante e criativa reconstrução.Statistical reasoning in health practice was disseminated by epidemiology and is widely used in various health fields. This paper revisits the historical development of epidemiology and the concept of risk, responsible for the use of statistical chance as part of causal thinking in health sciences. The study covered the period from 1872 to 1965, and the documental base consisted of scientific articles related to the development of epidemiology as a field, particularly in the American Journal of Hygiene, as well as scientific books. Three phases were identified in the development of epidemiology: constitution, exposure, and risk. The article proceeds to discuss epistemological and social and health aspects required for the historical understanding of each phase. It concludes by stressing the relevance of critical reflection on epidemiological science and its relationship to health practice, especially in public health, in order to optimize its current use and foster its on-going creative reconstruction
