    ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHIC EVOLUTION IN WOMEN WITH MEDICALLY REFRACTORY EPILEPSY

    We reviewed 444 EEGs of 62 women with medically refractary epilepsy, followed up for at least 5 years and that had 5 or more EEGs. According to our definitions we found 18 patients (29%) with frequent seizures, 16 (25.8%) with very frequent seizures, 16 (25.8%) with controlled seizures and 12 (19.3%) with occasional seizures. Four patients (6.5%) always showed normal EEGs, 30 (48.4%) had normal and abnormal EEGs and 28 (45.2%) only abnormal EEGs. Among the patients who had only normal EEGs, two had all seizures controlled, one had occasional seizures and one had frequent seizures. Among the patients who had normal and abnormal EEGs, 10 had controlled seizures, 5 had occasional seizures, 9 had frequent seizures and 6 had very frequent seizures. In the group of patients with always abnormal EEGs, 4 had controlled seizures, 6 had occasional seizures, 8 had frequent seizures, and IO had very frequent seizures. In relation to the last EEG, it was normal in 7 (43.7%) of 16 patients with controlled seizures, in 3 (25%) of 12 patients with occasional seizures and in 7 (38.9%) of 18 patients with frequent seizures, and in none of the patients with very frequent seizures. The patients who had only normal EEGs seem to have a better outcome than those with abnormal EEGs. We observed that the last EEG was normal in 43.7% of the patients with controlled seizures. These data may suggest a relative importance of the EEG considering the long-term prognosis regarding seizure control.533A38438

    Sexual dysfunction in epilepsy - Identifying the psychological variables

    In order to evaluate the psychological variables that affect sexual dysfunction (SD) in epilepsy, where compared 60 epileptics (Group 1) with 60 healthy individuals (Group 2), through the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger et al., 1970), Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, 1974) and Sexual Behavior Interview (Souza, 1995). Sexual dysfunction (SD), anxiety and depression were found more frequently in Group 1 than in Group 2 and were not related to sex. Variables such as the onset duration and frequency of seizures as well as the use to medication were not associated with SD. Temporal lobe epilepsy was related to SD (p = 0.035) but net to anxiety or depression. Anxiety and depression were related to SD in both groups. Perception in controlling the seizures was closely related to anxiety (p = 0) and depression (p = 0.009). We conclude that psychological factors play an important role in the alteration of sexual behavior in epileptics and that suitable attention must be given to the control of these variables.582A21422

    The global population reached 7.9 billion in 2021, which represents a 160% increase in the number of people to be fed since 1960. Agricultural systems must sustainably meet food demand for this growing population while minimizing or mitigating potential environmental impacts, which are of growing concern to both consumers and the scientific community. High protein animal products (meat and milk) play a crucial part in human nutrition and pastures represent ~20% of the planet’s surface. Pastoral areas have a great influence on both ecological balance and human subsistence. Ruminant livestock production systems are hotly debated because of the emission of methane, which is produced during enteric fermentation of ingested food within the rumen. Methanogenesis is a naturally occurring process in the digestive system of ruminant animals and ingesting a high-quality diet has been shown to reduce methane production. An additional function of pastoral grasslands is the capacity of the soils to operate as carbon sinks. Well managed pastures absorb carbon from the atmosphere where it can add to soil organic matter directly, through residue decomposition or excrement returns. However, in Brazil and globally, the efficiency of animal productivity tends to be lower in extensively grazed farming systems. Changes to pasture and grazing management in combination with the adoption of technology is necessary to improve the quality of pastures, increase animal productivity, and consequently reduce methane emissions from ruminant livestock.     Comfort from the perspective of families of people hospitalized in the intensive care unit

    This study aimed at understanding the meaning of comfort to the families of people in intensive care units. It consists of a qualitative study carried out in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Salvador-Bahia. Fourteen family members were interviewed. The authors utilized the theoretical principles of symbolic interactionism and the technique of qualitative data analysis. Results indicated that the categories Safety, Receptiveness, Information, Proximity, Social and Spiritual Support, Convenience and Integration expressed the meaning of comfort, which was comprised of reliability in terms of technical-scientific competence and a supportive and sensitive attitude of the team, chance of recovery, access to information and the opportunity to be close to the patient, support of people in their social life, spiritual sources and the environmental structure of the hospital, preservation of self-care and routine activities. It was concluded that the family is important as objects and subjects of the actions in healthcare and must be the focus in public health policies and programs in Brazil

    Multivariate analysis reveals genetic diversity in Paspalum notatum Flügge

    The objective of this study was to evaluate 94 Paspalum notatum genotypes over two growing seasons to estimate genetic dissimilarity through agronomic traits and the distance between genotypes. This information is used to create an ideotype from the best averages obtained for the set of characteristics evaluated. Seven apomitic, three sexual, and 81 hybrid genotypes were compared with native genotypes “André da Rocha”, “Bagual”, and cultivar “Pensacola” as controls. There is genetic variability in P. notatum for the studied characteristics, and distinct genotypes with superior characteristics can be used in new combinations between apomictic and sexual plants to obtain hybrids. The characters with the greatest relative contribution to the dissimilarity between the genotypes were tiller density, stem dry mass, and leaf dry mass yield. Thus, these characteristics are suitable criteria to infer genetic distance studies in P. notatum. The selection index based on the ideotype is an auxiliary tool in the breeding process. The ideotype must be based on characteristics of interest according to the objective of the breeding program, as well as on the breeder’s prior knowledge in relation to culture

    Characterization and genetic diversity in Paspalum notatum Flügge accessions: Morphological and geographical distance

    The objective of this work was to describe morphology and grouping of Paspalum notatum accessions, based on multicategorical data which discards the redundant variables for quantification of genetic diversity. We also tested the hypothesis that geographical distance was correlated with morphological divergence. In our study, multivariate analyzes successfully demonstrated the geographic and morphological variability of the P. notatum accessions characterized. Many of these evaluated accessions can be included in future genetic improvement programs. Based on two methodologies for discarding variables, it was possible to identify the potentially important morphological characteristics from genetic diversity studies and characterize new accessions aimed at improving forage and seed production. The methodologies used to discard variables are biometric tools that can be used successfully in future plant breeding programs, especially when a large number of traits and accessions are being evaluated. Although significant, geographic distance had a low association with morphological traits. This indicated the need to use other characteristics, such as forage and seed yield, in addition to molecular analysis. Our analyzes showed genetic variability in P. notatum for all the characteristics studied
