    Observation and Modeling of Source Effects in Coda Wave Interferometry at Pavlof Volcano

    We examine seismic records of repeating explosions from Pavlof volcano, Alaska, during its 2007 eruption. Repetitive explosions are typical of Strombolian-style eruptions and allow measurement of relative time shifts between similar late-arriving phases using the technique called coda wave interferometry (Snieder et al., 2002). The measurements enable the detection of small changes in the volcanic interior of Pavlof. We are able to resolve an increase in the relative traveltime change of late-arriving seismic waves on the order of 0.3% over the course of two weeks. Based on the spectra of the explosions, their location inside the magma conduit, previous studies of Pavlof volcano, and 3D seismic modeling, we argue the most likely scenario is one in which the velocity and/or the geometry of the conduit changes. This demonstrates the sensitivity of coda wave interferometry to source effects, in addition to path effects, at volcanoes

    Abundance and distribution of planktonic Archaea and Bacteria in the waters west of the Antarctic Peninsula

    Polyribonucleotide probes targeting planktonic archaeal (Group I and II) and bacterial rRNA revealed that Archaea comprised a significant fraction of total prokaryote cell abundance in the marine waters west of the Antarctic Peninsula. Determinations of Archaea and Bacteria cell abundances were made during two research cruises to the Palmer Long‐Term Ecological Research region during the austral winter and summer of 1999. During the austral summer, surface water abundances of Group I (GI) Archaea were generally low, averaging 4.7 x 103 cells ml−1 and accounting for 1% of the total picoplankton assemblage. The abundance of GI Archaea increased significantly with depth, averaging 2.1 X 104 cells ml−1 and comprising 9–39% of the total picoplankton abundance in the meso‐ (150–1,000 m) and bathypelagic (1,000–3,500 m) circumpolar deep water (CDW). Relative to summertime distributions, GI cells were more evenly distributed throughout the water column during the winter, averaging 10% of the picoplankton in the surface waters and 13% in the CDW. Surface water GI abundance increased 44% between the summer and winter, coincident with a fivefold decrease in GI abundance in the deeper waters. The abundance of Group II (GII) Archaea was persistently \u3c2% of the total picoplankton throughout the water column in both summer and winter. Bacterial abundance was greatest in the upper water column (0–100 m) during the summer, averaging 3.9 x 105 cells ml−1 and comprised 89% of the total picoplankton assemblage. Generally, GI Archaea varied seasonally in the deeper waters, whereas bacterial abundance varied more in the upper waters. The observed variability in bacterial and archaeal abundance suggests that these two groups of marine picoplankton are dynamic components of Southern Ocean microbial food webs

    Designing hollow nano gold golf balls.

    Hollow/porous nanoparticles, including nanocarriers, nanoshells, and mesoporous materials have applications in catalysis, photonics, biosensing, and delivery of theranostic agents. Using a hierarchical template synthesis scheme, we have synthesized a nanocarrier mimicking a golf ball, consisting of (i) solid silica core with a pitted gold surface and (ii) a hollow/porous gold shell without silica. The template consisted of 100 nm polystyrene beads attached to a larger silica core. Selective gold plating of the core followed by removal of the polystyrene beads produced a golf ball-like nanostructure with 100 nm pits.     The technologies of isolation: apocalypse and self in Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Kairo

    In this investigation of the Japanese film Kairo, I contemplate how the horrors present in the film relate to the issue of self, by examining a number of interlocking motifs. These include thematic foci on disease and technology which are more intimately and inwardly focused that the film's conclusion first appears to suggest. The true horror here, I argue, is ontological: centred on the self and its divorcing from the exterior world, especially founded in an increased use of and reliance on communicative technologies. I contend that these concerns are manifested in Kairo by presenting the spread of technology as disease-like, infecting the city and the individuals who are isolated and imprisoned by their urban environment. Finally, I investigate the meanings of the apocalypse, expounding how it may be read as hopeful for the future rather than indicative of failure or doom

    Stellar Population Variations in the Milky Way's Stellar Halo

    If the stellar halos of disk galaxies are built up from the disruption of dwarf galaxies, models predict highly structured variations in the stellar populations within these halos. We test this prediction by studying the ratio of blue horizontal branch stars (BHB stars; more abundant in old, metal-poor populations) to main-sequence turn-off stars (MSTO stars; a feature of all populations) in the stellar halo of the Milky Way using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We develop and apply an improved technique to select BHB stars using ugr color information alone, yielding a sample of ~9000 g<18 candidates where ~70% of them are BHB stars. We map the BHB/MSTO ratio across ~1/4 of the sky at the distance resolution permitted by the absolute magnitude distribution of MSTO stars. We find large variations of BHB/MSTO star ratio in the stellar halo. Previously identified, stream-like halo structures have distinctive BHB/MSTO ratios, indicating different ages/metallicities. Some halo features, e.g., the low-latitude structure, appear to be almost completely devoid of BHB stars, whereas other structures appear to be rich in BHB stars. The Sagittarius tidal stream shows an apparent variation in BHB/MSTO ratio along its extent, which we interpret in terms of population gradients within the progenitor dwarf galaxy. Our detection of coherent stellar population variations between different stellar halo substructures provides yet more support to cosmologically motivated models for stellar halo growth.Comment: Astronomical Journal, in press. 10 pages, 5 color figures.     Meaning in hoarding: perspectives of people who hoard on clutter, culture, and agency

    Hoarding has become increasingly prominent in clinical practice and popular culture in recent years, giving rise to extensive research and commentary. Critical responses in the social sciences have criticised the cultural assumptions built in to the construct of ‘hoarding disorder’ and expressed fears that it may generate stigma outweighing its benefits; however, few of these studies have engaged directly with ‘hoarders’ themselves. This paper reports on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with ten individuals living in England, who received assessment and intervention for hoarding from Social Services. Their narratives drew on the cultural repertoire of values and discourses around waste and worth, the mediation of sociality and relationships through material objects, physical constraints on keeping order, and the role played by mental health. Analysing these perspectives anthropologically shows how dominant models of hoarding, such as the DSM-5 paradigm, potentially lend themselves to reductionist understandings that efface the meaning ‘hoarding’ may have and thereby deny agency to the person labelled as ‘hoarder’. More culturally informed analysis, by contrast, affords insights into the complex landscape of value, waste, social critique, emotion, interpersonal relationships and practical difficulties that may underlie hoarding cases, and points the way to more person-centred practice and analysis

    ANCA antigens, proteinase 3 and myeloperoxidase, are not expressed in endothelial cells. Background. One hypothesis for the pathogenesis of vasculitis associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ANCAs) proposes that ANCAs bind to ANCA antigens, such as proteinase 3 (PR3) or myeloperoxidase (MPO), which are produced by endothelial cells and expressed on their surfaces. There are conflicting reports, however, on whether endothelial cells express the ANCA antigen PR3, and there are no reports on endothelial expression of MPO. The aim of this study was to determine the presence or absence of PR3 and MPO mRNA in both venous and arterial endothelial cells, employing standard reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) techniques and also the quantitative and highly specific method, TaqMan PCR. Methods. RT-PCR (with 3 primer sets) and TaqMan PCR, a method for detecting low copy transcripts, were used to probe for PR3 and MPO transcripts in human endothelial cells from umbilical vein (HUVEC) and artery (HUAEC) and from lung microvascular (HLMVEC). Cells were treated with interferon-γ (200 units/mL) or tumor necrosis factor-α (3 or 10 ng/mL) or both. Results. Transcripts for PR3 and/or MPO were not detected in HUVEC, HUAEC, and HLMVEC by standard RT-PCR. Analyses for PR3 protein confirmed that PR3 is not expressed in HUVEC. HUVEC and HUAEC were negative for PR3 and MPO by TaqMan PCR. Conclusions. PR3 and MPO are not expressed in HUVEC, HUAEC, or HLMVEC. Endothelial cell presentation of endogenous PR3 and MPO antigens is not involved in the pathogenesis of ANCA-associated vasculitis. Alternative explanations need to be explored to determine the pathogenic effect of ANCAs

    Results of an Expert Consensus Survey on the Treatment of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension With Oral Prostacyclin Pathway Agents

    Background Treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) has evolved substantially over the past two decades and varies according to etiology, functional class (FC), hemodynamic parameters, and other clinical factors. Current guidelines do not provide definitive recommendations regarding the use of oral prostacyclin pathway agents (PPAs) in PAH. To provide guidance on the use of these agents, an expert panel was convened to develop consensus statements for the initiation of oral PPAs in adults with PAH. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted using MEDLINE. The established RAND/University of California Los Angeles appropriateness method, which incorporates the Delphi method and the nominal group technique, was used to create consensus statements. Idiopathic, heritable, repaired congenital heart defect, and drug- or toxin-induced PAH (IPAH+) was considered as one etiologic grouping. The process was focused on the use of oral treprostinil or selexipag in patients with IPAH+ or connective tissue disease-associated PAH and FC II or III symptoms receiving background dual endothelin receptor antagonist/phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor therapy. Results The panel developed 14 consensus statements regarding the appropriate use of oral PPAs in the target population. The panel identified 13 clinical scenarios in which selexipag may be considered as a treatment option. Conclusions The paucity of clinical evidence overall, and particularly from randomized trials in this setting, creates a gap in knowledge. These consensus statements are intended to aid physicians in navigating treatment options and using oral PPAs in the most appropriate manner in patients with PAH
