Homogeneous metallicities and radial velocities for Galactic globular clusters. II. New CaT metallicities for 28 distant and reddened globular clusters
Although the globular clusters in the Milky Way have been studied for a long
time, a significant fraction of them lack homogeneous metallicity and radial
velocity measurements. In an earlier paper we presented the first part of a
project to obtain metallicities and radial velocities of Galactic globular
clusters from multiobject spectroscopy of their member stars using the ESO Very
Large Telescope. In this paper we add metallicities and radial velocities for a
new sample of 28 globular clusters, including in particular globular clusters
in the MW halo and the Galactic bulge. Together with our previous results, this
study brings the number of globular clusters with homogeneous measurements to
\% of those listed in the W. Harris' catalogue. As in our previous
work, we have used the CaII triplet lines to derive metallicities and radial
velocities. For most of the clusters in this study, this is the first analysis
based on spectroscopy of individual member stars. The metallicities derived
from the CaII triplet are then compared to the results of our parallel study
based on spectral fitting in the optical region and the implications for
different calibrations of the CaII triplet line strengths are discussed. We
also comment on some interesting clusters and investigate the presence of an
abundance spread in the globular clusters here. A hint of a possible intrinsic
spread is found for NGC 6256, which therefore appears to be a good candidate
for further study.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and

Peer Reviewe
Size of predatory mites and refuge entrance determine success of biological control of the coconut mite
Published online: 06 July 2016Predators face the challenge of accessing prey that live in sheltered habitats. The coconut mite Aceriaguerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae) lives hidden beneath the perianth, which is appressed to the coconut fruit surface, where they feed on the meristematic tissue. Its natural enemy, the predatory mite Neoseiuluspaspalivorus De Leon (Acari: Phytoseiidae), is larger than this pest and is believed to gain access to the refuge only after its opening has increased with coconut fruit age. In the field, experimentally enlarging the perianth-rim-fruit distance beyond the size of the predators resulted in earlier predator occurrence beneath the perianth and lower numbers of coconut mites. On non-manipulated coconut fruits, the predators gained access to the prey weeks later than on manipulated ones, resulting in higher pest densities of coconut mites. Successful biological control thus critically hinges on the size of the predator relative to the opening of the prey refuge
Polarization of dental caries among individuals aged 15 to 18 years
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of socioeconomic variables and self-perceived oral health in the polarization of caries among adolescents in Santa Bárbara D'Oeste, Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Sampling was randomized and sample size was defined according to WHO criteria. Two hundred and seventy seven adolescents (15 to 18 year-old) were examined by five trained examiners that assessed DMFT index according to WHO criteria. Self-perceived oral health, access to dental services and socio-demographic variables were self-reported. Student's t tests, chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression (with significant caries index (SiC) as the outcome), were performed. RESULTS: Mean DMFT was 5.48 (±4.22) and the proportion of "caries free" subjects was 15.5%. Mean DMFT (9.71±2.85) and mean D (1.67±2.18) of SiC positive subjects were significantly higher than mean DMFT (2.88±2.17) and mean D (0.45±0.87) of SiC negative subjects (
Using a nitrilase for the surface modification of acrylic fibres
The surface of an acrylic fibre was modified with a commercial nitrilase (EC 3.5.5.1). The effect of fibre solvents and polyols on nitrilase catalysis efficiency and stability was investigated. The nitrilase action on the acrylic fabric was improved by the combined addition of 1 M sorbitol and 4% N, N-dimethylacetamide. The colour levels for samples treated with nitrilase increased 156% comparing to the control samples. When the additives were introduced in the treatment media, the colour levels increased 199%. The enzymatic conversion of nitrile groups into the corresponding carboxylic groups, on the fibre surface, was followed by the release of ammonia and polyacrylic acid. A surface erosion phenomenon took place and determined the “oscillatory” behaviour of the amount of dye uptake with time of treatment. These results showed that the outcome of the application of the nitrilase for the acrylic treatment is intimately dependent on reaction media parameters, such as time, enzyme activity and formulation.(undefined
concluido el programa VASPER “Mi cuento, te cuento” (gl= 21; sig= 0,000;
