Finding RR Lyrae Stars with SkyMapper: an Observational Test

One of the major science goals of the SkyMapper Survey of the Southern Hemisphere sky is the determination of the shape and extent of the halo of the Galaxy. In this paper we quantify the likely efficiency and completeness of the survey as regards the detection of RR Lyrae variable stars, which are excellent tracers of the halo stellar population. We have accomplished this via observations of the RR Lyrae-rich globular cluster NGC 3201. We find that for single epoch uvgri observations followed by two further epochs of g, r imaging, as per the intended three-epoch survey strategy, we recover known RR Lyraes with a completeness exceeding 90%. We also investigate boundaries in the gravity-sensitive single-epoch two-color diagram that yield high completeness and high efficiency (i.e., minimal contamination by non-RR Lyraes) and the general usefulness of this diagram in separating populations.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, to appear in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA), published by Cambridge University Pres

As músicas do gênero funk ostentação vêm ganhando destaque na mídia brasileira. Suas letras carregam os nomes de diversas marcas de grifes nacionais e internacionais, e direcionam para o consumo dessas marcas globalizadas com o intuito de vender um estilo de vida e normas de comportamento para nossa sociedade contemporânea. O gênero musical da ostentação, portanto, é o foco do estudo. Analisa-se o discurso pronunciado em duas letras de músicas. Em uma delas – Nós de nave – fica evidenciada a falsa promessa de inclusão social. Incentiva-se o consumo desenfreado de produtos de luxo pelo público-alvo para o qual esse nicho musical é voltado: a juventude. Seu mote é a ideia de que a desigualdade social pode ser amenizada quando adquiridos os produtos de luxo das marcas famosas. Já a outra letra – intitulada Resposta ao funk ostentação –, de autoria de Edu Krieger, ganha destaque justamente por recriminar, a cada verso, a alusão à cultura do consumo por meio da ostentação do luxo e abordar seus impactos na cultura e na identidade juvenil.Palavras-chaves: Funk ostentação. Consumo. Marcas de luxo.  Inclusão social. ABSTRACTThe songs of the genre funk ostentation have been gaining prominence in the Brazilian media. His lyrics carry statements of several brands of national and international brands, which govern to a consumption of globalized brands with the intention of selling a lifestyle or way of being in our contemporary society. The ostentation genre will be the focus of study, in which it will analyze the speeches pronounced in two letters of songs of the genre. One of the lyrics is evidenced a "false promise" of social inclusion, when they encourage an unbridled consumption of luxury products, especially to the target audience where the musical rhythms are directed. The other lyrics are highlighted in this study, titled "Response to funk ostentation" by Edu Krieger, in which he reproaches each verse of his song for an allusion to a culture of consumption through the ostentation of luxury, and the Impacts on youth culture and identity by encouraging the consumption of luxury brands as a form of social status and guaranteeing a false social inclusion. The song lyrics for Mc Boy do Chame gain musical intonation when he recounts in his verses that social inequality can be achieved when he boasts the power of money in the conquest of luxury products / brands and famous brands.Keywords:Ostentation funk. Cancellation of atmospheric turbulence effects in entangled two-photon beams

Turbulent airflow in the atmosphere and the resulting random fluctuations in its refractive index have long been known as a major cause of image deterioration in astronomical imaging and figures among the obstacles for reliable optical communication when information is encoded in the spatial profile of a laser beam. Here we show that using correlation imaging and a suitably prepared source of photon pairs, the most severe of the disturbances inflicted on the beam by turbulence can be cancelled out. Other than a two-photon light source, only linear passive optical elements are needed and, as opposed to adaptive optics techniques, our scheme does not rely on active wavefront correction.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Clinical reasoning in canine spinal disease: what combination of clinical information is useful?

Spinal disease in dogs is commonly encountered in veterinary practice. Numerous diseases may cause similar clinical signs and presenting histories. The study objective was to use statistical models to identify combinations of discrete parameters from the patient signalment, history and neurological examination that could suggest the most likely diagnoses with statistical significance. A retrospective study of 500 dogs referred to the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals before June 2012 for the investigation of spinal disease was performed. Details regarding signalment, history, physical and neurological examinations, neuroanatomical localisation and imaging data were obtained. Univariate analyses of variables (breed, age, weight, onset, deterioration, pain, asymmetry, neuroanatomical localisation) were performed, and variables were retained in a multivariate logistic regression model if P<0.05. Leading diagnoses were intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE, n=149), intervertebral disc protrusion (n=149), ischaemic myelopathy (IM, n=48) and neoplasms (n=44). Multivariate logistic regression characterised IM and acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusions as the only peracute onset, non-progressive, non-painful and asymmetrical T3-L3 myelopathies. IVDE was most commonly characterised as acute onset, often deteriorating, painful and largely symmetrical T3-L3 myelopathy. This study suggests that most spinal diseases cause distinctive combinations of presenting clinical parameters (signalment, onset, deterioration, pain, asymmetry, neuroanatomical localisation). Taking particular account of these parameters may aid decision making in a clinical setting

O papel do professor no acolhimento escolar em casos de violência doméstica com os alunos

The school and the teacher play a fundamental role in welcoming students who experience situations of violation of the integrity of their lives, in cases of aggression and abuse that may occur. Research shows that the highest incidence of violence against children and adolescents often occurs in the family environment, believing it to be a way of educating or often reproducing what they also suffered. Therefore, the objectives of this article are to understand the role of the school and the teacher in caring for the child who suffers violation; raise the rates of violence in the city of Bertioga-SP; and, to verify if the teachers perceive alteration in the learning process of this child. The article was conducted with bibliographic and documentary survey, and field research with teachers in elementary schools 1 of the peripheral and central region, with CREAS, and with the Tutelary Council of Bertioga - SP. The data collected provided evidence that teachers understand this domestic violence and that school is one of the key places to receive the victim, but not all have the mastery of legal procedures that support children who suffer violence, but most admits that this situation interferes with school performance.La escuela y el maestro desempeñan un papel fundamental en la acogida de los estudiantes que experimentan situaciones de violación de la integridad de sus vidas, en los casos de agresión y abuso que puedan ocurrir. Las investigaciones muestran que la mayor incidencia de violencia contra niños y adolescentes suele ocurrir en el entorno familiar, creyendo que es una forma de educar o reproducir prácticas sociales distorsionadas. Por lo tanto, los objetivos de este artículo son entender el papel de la escuela y el maestro en la recepción del niño que sufre violación; aumentar las tasas de violencia en el municipio de Bertioga-SP; y verificar si los maestros perciben cambios en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de este niño. El artículo se llevó a cabo con encuesta bibliográfica y documental, e investigación de campo con profesores de escuelas primarias I en la región periférica y central de la ciudad, con CREAS, y con el Consejo Tutelar de Bertioga - SP. por lo tanto, ven la escuela como uno de los lugares fundamentales para la recepción de la víctima, sin embargo, no todo el mundo tiene el dominio de los procedimientos legales que apoyan a los niños que sufren violencia.A escola e o professor têm papel fundamental no acolhimento de alunos que passam por situações de violação a integridade de sua vida, em casos de agressões e abusos que possam ocorrer. Por isso, os objetivos deste artigo são compreender o papel da escola e do professor no acolhimento da criança que sofre violação; levantar os índices de violência no município de Bertioga-SP; e, verificar se os professores percebem alteração no processo de ensino e aprendizagem dessa criança. O artigo foi realizado com levantamento bibliográfico e documental, e pesquisa de campo com professores de escolas de ensino fundamental I da região periférica e central da cidade, com o CREAS, e com o Conselho Tutelar de Bertioga – SP. Os dados coletados trouxeram elementos demonstrando que os professores entendem essa violência doméstica, constatando que essa situação interfere no desempenho escolar e, por isso, veem a escola como um dos locais fundamentais para o acolhimento da vítima, porém, nem todos têm o domínio dos procedimentos legais que amparam as crianças que sofrem violência

Delivering reform in English healthcare: an ideational perspective

A variety of perspectives has been put forward to understand reform across healthcare systems. Recently, some have called for these perspectives to give greater recognition to the role of ideational processes. The purpose of this article is to present an ideational approach to understanding the delivery of healthcare reform. It draws on a case of English healthcare reform – the Next Stage Review led by Lord Darzi – to show how the delivery of its reform proposals was associated with four ideational frames. These frames built on the idea of “progress” in responding to existing problems; the idea of “prevailing policy” in forming part of a bricolage of ideas within institutional contexts; the idea of “prescription” as top-down structural change at odds with local contexts; and the idea of “professional disputes” in challenging the notion of clinical engagement across professional groups. The article discusses the implications of these ideas in furthering our understanding of policy change, conflict and continuity across healthcare settings
