    Structuring effect of tools conceptualized through initial goal fixedness for work activity

    Analysis of work activities in nuclear industry has highlighted a new psycho-cognitive phenomenon: the structuring effect of tools (SET) sometimes leading to unexpected operating deviations; the subject is unable to perform a task concerning object A using or adapting a tool designed and presented to perform the same task concerning object B when object A is expected by the subject. Conditions to isolate and identify the SET were determined and reproduced in experiments for further analysis. Students and seven professional categories of adults (N = 77) were involved in three experimental conditions (control group, group with prior warning, group with final control) while individually performing a task with similar characteristics compared to real operating conditions and under moderate time-pressure. The results were: (1) highest performance with prior warning and (2) demonstration that academic and professional training favor the SET. After discussing different cognitive processes potentially related to the SET, we described (3) the psycho-cognitive process underlying the SET: Initial Goal Fixedness (IGF), a combination of the anchoring of the initial goal of the activity with a focus on the features of the initial goal favored by an Einstellung effect. This suggested coping with the negative effect of the SET by impeding the IGF rather than trying to increase the subjects’ awareness at the expense of their health.     AbstractThis chapter outlines the essential topics for developing and testing a questionnaire for a discrete choice experiment survey. It addresses issues such as the description of the environmental good, pretesting of the survey, incentive compatibility, consequentiality or mitigation of hypothetical bias. For the latter, cheap talk scripts, opt-out reminders or an oath script are discussed. Moreover, the use of instructional choice sets, the identification of protest responses and strategic bidders are considered. Finally, issues related to the payment vehicle and the cost vector design are the subject of this section

    Worthy to Lose Some Money for Better Air Quality: Applications of Bayesian Networks on the Causal Effect of Income and Air Pollution on Life Satisfaction in Switzerland

    One important determinant of well-being is the environmental quality. Many countries apply environmental regulations, reforms and policies for its improvement. However, the question is how the people value the environment, including the air quality. This study examines the association between air pollution and life satisfaction using the Swiss Household Panel survey over the years 2000–2013. We follow a Bayesian network (BN) strategy to estimate the causal effect of the income and air pollution on life satisfaction. We look at five main air pollutants: the ground-level ozone (O3), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter of 10 micrometres (PM10). Then, we calculate the individuals’ marginal willingness to pay (MWTP) of reducing air pollution that aims to improve their life satisfaction. Beside the BN model, we take advantage of the panel structure of our data and we follow two approaches as robustness check. This includes the adapted probit fixed effects and the generalised methods of moments system. Our findings show that O3 and PM10 present the highest MWTP values ranging between 8000and8000 and 12,000, followed by the remained air pollutants with MWTP extending between 2000and2000 and 6500. Applying the BNs, we find that the causal effect of income on life satisfaction is substantially increased. We also show the causal effects of air pollutants remain almost the same, leading to lower values of willingness to pay

    Perceptions of Links Between Quality of Life Areas: Implications for Measurement and Practice

    Quality of life (QoL) measures frequently conceptualise QoL as having distinct life domains. However, research suggests that there may be overlap. In this study, perceptions of links between life areas are explored. At time one, 143 participants in Khon Kaen, Thailand completed the "Global Person Generated Index" (GPGI), nominating up to five areas important to QoL. Participants then described why they perceived areas as important. Frequencies of links mentioned between areas were recorded. At time two, 42 participants completed the GPGI and were then asked to visually represent the areas of life with circles, overlapping, containing other circles or unconnected to show the interrelationships. Descriptions of the life areas often spontaneously included links with other life areas. "Money" was the most commonly linked area, followed by "job or work" and family. Diagrams representing the relationships between life areas showed diversity. All participants linked at least one area. About 26% presented at least one area as independent. Participants in this sample generally viewed their QoL as composed of some inter-related areas. This has implications for QoL measurement, suggesting data to capture inter-relating domains should be collected. The use of a mixed methods approach to understanding QoL is recommended. Implications for practice are also highlighted, as interventions aimed at one area of QoL will likely impact on others, in ways we currently do not measure. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V
