    RHEED characterisation of the near surface microstructure of Ti-O based biocompatible coatings

    Mechanically polished, annealed, nitric acid treated and aged in boiling water after nitriding, commercially pure Ti substrates have been characterised using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and secondary electron imaging, in terms of their naturally formed or ‘accelerated’ oxide layers. Annealing induced crystallisation and transformation of anatase to the rutile phase and led to increased roughness, with localised fracture and balling up of the surface oxide layer as the time and temperature of annealing were increased. Nitric acid modification produced no influence on the anatase to rutile transformation, whilst further aging in boiling water induced an acceleration of this transformation. RHEED data acquired at differing accelerating voltages have indicated a Ti-O phase gradation within annealed sol-gel derived V modified TiO2 layers deposited by spin coating onto Ti substrates

    ATTENUATION OF GROUND REACTION FORCES IN DISMOUNTS FROM TEH BALANCE BEAM

    Epidemiological studies have documented the incidence of injuries in female gymnasts . In comparison to other sports, the incidence of injury in gymnastics is high relative to other sports. One epidemiology study prompted the author to state that "...women's gymnastics should he recognized as a hazardous sport." To understand the etiology 01 injury, researchers have identified injuries by sites, types and/or events (floor, uneven bars, vault, and balance beam). Dismounts, considered an element 01 all events, have drawn attention as an injury mechanism. Studies have shown he dismount, especially when gymnasts attempt to "stick" their lauding, to be a major component of the incidence of injury. This study investigated ground reaction forces in the dismount from the balance beam under two styles (stick and roll-out of the landing). Attenuation of relatively high impact forces through modification of landing may be used, at minimum, in practices to reduce the exposure to gymnasts to this physical contraindication. Subjects were 23 female gymnasts who ranged in age (118 to 201 months, mean=158.8, SD=23.7) and level (5 to 10). Each subject was asked to perform two types of dismounts (roundoff and barani) from a balance beam and to land each dismount with two the different styles onto a mot adhered to a force platform. AU subjects had ground reaction forces for both styles of the roundoff. and 14 subjects had ground reaction forces for both styles of the barani dismount. Table 1 contains a summary of the ground reaction forces as a percentage of body weight. Our results indicate that vertical ground reaction forces are significantly reduced by rolling out of the landing

    Organic Ring Oscillators with Sub-200 ns Stage Delay Based on a Solution-Processed p-type Semiconductor Blend

    High-frequency ring oscillators with sub-microsecond stage delay fabricated from spin-coated films of a specially formulated small-molecule/host-polymer blend are reported. Contacts and interconnects are patterned by photolithography with plasma etching used for creating vias and removing excess material to reduce parasitic effects. The characteristics of transistors with 4.6 μm channel length scale linearly with channel width over the range 60�2160 μm. Model device parameters extracted using Silvaco's Universal Organic Thin Film Transistor (UOTFT) Model yield values of hole mobility increasing from 1.9 to 2.6 cm2 Vs�1 as gate voltage increased. Simulated and fabricated Vgs = 0 inverters predict that the technology is capable of fabricating 5-stage ring oscillators operating above 100 kHz. Initial designs operated mainly at frequencies in the range 250�300 kHz, due to smaller parasitic gate overlap capacitances and higher supply voltages than assumed in the simulations. A design incorporating graded inverter sizes operates at frequencies above 400 kHz with the best reaching 529 kHz. The corresponding stage delay of 189 ns is the shortest reported to date for a solution-processed p-type semiconductor and compares favorably with similar circuits based on evaporated small molecules. Significant further improvements are identified which could lead to the fabrication of digital circuits that operate at much higher bit rates than previously reported

    Microstructural characterisation of biocompatible sol-gel derived vanadium doped TiO2 on Ti substrates

    Sol-gel derived pure titania is compared with vanadium and / or aluminium modified titania deposited by spin coating on pure titanium substrates annealed at 300C and 650C. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction indicated the presence of anatase from the surface layers of samples annealed at 300C with a transition to rutile with increasing annealing temperature and addition of vanadium. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicated a gradation of Ti-O phases through the layer with the dominant presence of rutile. Aluminium was found to inhibit grain growth while vanadium promoted crystallisation

    Altered functional brain network connectivity and glutamate system function in transgenic mice expressing truncated Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1

    Considerable evidence implicates DISC1 as a susceptibility gene for multiple psychiatric diseases. DISC1 has been intensively studied at the molecular, cellular and behavioral level, but its role in regulating brain connectivity and brain network function remains unknown. Here, we utilize a set of complementary approaches to assess the functional brain network abnormalities present in mice expressing a truncated Disc1 gene (Disc1tr Hemi mice). Disc1tr Hemi mice exhibited hypometabolism in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and reticular thalamus along with a reorganization of functional brain network connectivity that included compromised hippocampal–PFC connectivity. Altered hippocampal–PFC connectivity in Disc1tr Hemi mice was confirmed by electrophysiological analysis, with Disc1tr Hemi mice showing a reduced probability of presynaptic neurotransmitter release in the monosynaptic glutamatergic hippocampal CA1–PFC projection. Glutamate system dysfunction in Disc1tr Hemi mice was further supported by the attenuated cerebral metabolic response to the NMDA receptor (NMDAR) antagonist ketamine and decreased hippocampal expression of NMDAR subunits 2A and 2B in these animals. These data show that the Disc1 truncation in Disc1tr Hemi mice induces a range of translationally relevant endophenotypes underpinned by glutamate system dysfunction and altered brain connectivity

    The γ\gamma-circular polarizations (PγP_{\gamma}) and asymmetries (AγA_{\gamma}) of the parity forbidden M1 + E2 γ\gamma-decays: 36Cl∗(Jπ=2−;T=1;Ex=1.95^{36}Cl^{\ast} (J^{\pi} = 2^{-}; T = 1; E_{x} = 1.95 MeV) →\rightarrow 36Cl(Jπ=2+;T=1;g.s.)^{36}Cl (J^{\pi} = 2^{+}; T = 1; g.s.) and 36Ar∗(Jπ=2−;T=0;Ex=4.97^{36}Ar^{\ast} (J^{\pi} = 2^{-}; T = 0; E_{x} = 4.97 MeV) →\rightarrow 36Ar∗(Jπ=2+;T=0;Ex=1.97^{36}Ar^{\ast} (J^{\pi} = 2^{+}; T = 0; E_{x} = 1.97 MeV) are investigated theoretically. We use the recently proposed Warburton-Becker-Brown shell-model interaction. For the weak forces we discuss comparatively different weak interaction models based on different assumptions for evaluating the weak meson-hadron coupling constants. The results determine a range of PγP_{\gamma} values from which we find the most probable values: PγP_{\gamma} = 1.1⋅10−41.1 \cdot 10^{-4} for 36Cl^{36}Cl and PγP_{\gamma} = 3.5⋅10−43.5 \cdot 10^{-4} for 36Ar^{36}Ar.Comment: RevTeX, 17 pages; to appear in Phys.
