Towards an understanding of the nuclear potential
The formalism for investigating the /bar Q/q/bar Q/q system on the lattice is constructed. We describe how the model may be used to study the nuclear potential, and present some preliminary results on the range of the nuclear force. 6 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab
Cellular Models for River Networks
A cellular model introduced for the evolution of the fluvial landscape is
revisited using extensive numerical and scaling analyses. The basic network
shapes and their recurrence especially in the aggregation structure are then
addressed. The roles of boundary and initial conditions are carefully analyzed
as well as the key effect of quenched disorder embedded in random pinning of
the landscape surface. It is found that the above features strongly affect the
scaling behavior of key morphological quantities. In particular, we conclude
that randomly pinned regions (whose structural disorder bears much physical
meaning mimicking uneven landscape-forming rainfall events, geological
diversity or heterogeneity in surficial properties like vegetation, soil cover
or type) play a key role for the robust emergence of aggregation patterns

Professional closure by proxy: the impact of changing educational requirements on class mobility for a cohort of Big 8 partners
Closure events impacting on class mobility may include mechanisms initiated by bodies other than the professional body. The research examines if the introduction of full-time study requirements at universities for aspiring accountants effectively introduced a closure mechanism in the accounting profession. Data was derived from an Oral History study of partners in large firms. The younger partners (born after the Second World War) completed full-time degree study at university, but did not provide evidence of class mobility into the profession. The older cohort, born between 1928 and 1946, completed part-time studies only, few completed a degree, and, in contrast to the younger cohort, shows a perceptible upward movement from lower socio-economic classes into the professional class. This suggests that changing the preferred educational routes for new accountants entering the large chartered accounting (CA) firms compromised the "stepping stone" function of accounting as a portal into the professional class
Observation of Scaling Violations in Scaled Momentum Distributions at HERA
Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering
(DIS) events over a large range of and using the ZEUS detector. The
evolution of the scaled momentum, , with in the range 10 to 1280
, has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit
frame. The results show clear evidence, in a single experiment, for scaling

D* Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic
scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The
data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel
(+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The
cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with
and is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region
{ GeV and }. Differential cross
sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), and are
compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon
fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the
full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and (D^{*\pm}), the charm
contribution to the proton structure function is

Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5
GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS
detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the
centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total
transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly
a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4
GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This
observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with

Using Narrative Research and Portraiture to Inform Design Research
Abstract. Employing an interdisciplinary perspective, this paper addresses how narrative research and portraiture- methods originating from, and commonly used in social sciences- can be beneficial for HCI and design research communities. Narrative research takes stories as a basis for data collection and analysis, while portraiture can be used to create written narratives about interview participants. Drawing on this knowledge, we show how a focus on narrative data, and analysis of such data through portraiture, can be adopted for the specific purpose of enhancing design processes. We hope to encourage design and HCI researchers to consider adopting these methods. By drawing on an illustrative example, we show how these methods served to inform design ideas for digital crafting. Based on our experiences, we present guidelines for using narrative research and portraiture for design research, as well as discussing opportunities and strengths, and limitations and risks
Transpiração e crescimento foliar de crisântemo em função da fração de água transpirável no substrato
The objective of this work was to evaluate the response of transpiration and leaf growth of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivars to available water in the substrate, represented by the fraction of transpirable substrate water (FTbSW). The experiments were performed in two periods, in a completely randomized design, with four chrysanthemum cultivars (Cherie White, Bronze Repin, Yoapple Valley, and Calabria), under two substrate water conditions (with or without water stress), with 10 replicates. Plants were grown in a greenhouse, in 2.8-L pots with substrate. FTSbW, transpiration, and leaf growth were measured daily, during the period of water deficit. The average threshold FTSbW, indicating that transpiration and leaf growth began to be affected, was respectively 0.63 and 0.68 for 'Cherie White', 0.60 and 0.69 for 'Bronze Repin', 0.53 and 0.59 for 'Yoapple Valley', and 0.51 and 0.54 for 'Calabria'. Available water decrease in the substrate reduces leaf growth before restricting transpiration. The Cherie White and Bronze Repin cultivars are more tolerant to water deficit by closing the stomata earlier and retaining more water in the substrate than the Yoapple Valley and Calabria cultivars.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resposta da transpiração e do crescimento foliar de cultivares de crisântemo (Dendranthema grandiflorum) ao conteúdo de água disponível no substrato, representado pela fração de água transpirável no substrato (FATSb). Os experimentos foram realizados em dois períodos, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro cultivares de crisântemo (Cherie White, Bronze Repin, Yoapple Valley e Calabria), em duas condições hídricas (com ou sem deficiência hídrica), com 10 repetições. As plantas foram cultivadas em casa de vegetação, em vasos de 2,8 L preenchidos com substrato. A FATSb, a transpiração e o crescimento foliar foram determinados diariamente durante o período de deficiência hídrica. As FATSb críticas médias, indicativas de que a transpiração e o crescimento foliar começam a ser afetados, foram respectivamente de 0,63 e 0,68 para 'Cherie White', 0,60 e 0,69 para 'Bronze Repin', 0,53 e 0,59 para 'Yoapple Valley', e 0,51 e 0,54 para 'Calabria'. A diminuição da água disponível no substrato provoca a redução do crescimento foliar antes de restringir a transpiração. As cultivares Cherie White e Bronze Repin são mais tolerantes ao deficit hídrico por fechar os estômatos antes e conservar mais a água no substrato do que as cultivares Yoapple Valley e Calabria
