Experimental study on inertial hydrodynamic behaviors of a complex remotely operated vehicle
This paper presents an experimental study on inertial hydrodynamic behaviors of an open-frame remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that has a complex open-frame hull but a large capacity to hold more instruments on board than those of other ROVs. A 1:4 scaled model was tested by a vertical planar motion mechanism in a circulating water channel of Harbin Engineering University. The inertial coefficients, which can be used for the simulation of motions and therefore for the maneuverability of the ROV, were calculated. Particular attention was paid to discuss the properties of the cross-inertial coefficients, which are related to the inertial forces/moments induced by the motion in other directions
Plasma Leptin, hTERT Gene Expression, and Anthropometric Measures in Obese and Non-Obese Women with Breast Cancer
Introduction Expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) occurs in most cancers but its relation with obesity is unclear. This study explores the association between leptin levels and anthropometric indices with hTERT mRNA levels in breast cancer patients of different obesity grades. Materials and methods In this case-control study, 65 breast cancer patients participated. Expression of tissues hTERT mRNA was carried out by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Leptin concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay. Results Twelve patients (18.46%) were hTERT negative and 53(81.54%) were positive. hTERT mRNA levels were associated with BMI but not with waist circumference (WC) (r = 0.219, P = 0.22) and waist to hip ratio (WHR) (r = 0.212, P = 0.237). Leptin level and hTERT mRNA levels (r = 0.484, P = 0.008) were correlated as well as BMI and hTERT expression. Conclusions This study has shown a correlation between leptin levels and hTERT expression. These findings may clarify the role of leptin in breast carcinogenesis, and hence obesity could be responsible for increased incidences in breast cancer as well as its progression via enhanced production of leptin
The fermi arc and fermi pocket in cuprates in a short-range diagonal stripe phase
In this paper we studied the fermi arc and the fermi pocket in cuprates in a
short-range diagonal stripe phase with wave vectors , which
reproduce with a high accuracy the positions and sizes of the fermi arc and
fermi pocket and the superstructure in cuprates observed by Meng et
al\cite{Meng}. The low-energy spectral function indicates that the fermi pocket
results from the main band and the shadow band at the fermi energy. Above the
fermi energy the shadow band gradually departs away from the main band, leaving
a fermi arc. Thus we conclude that the fermi arc and fermi pocket can be fully
attributed to the stripe phase but has nothing to do with pairing.
Incorporating a d-wave pairing potential in the stripe phase the spectral
weight in the antinodal region is removed, leaving a clean fermi pocket in the
nodal region.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Long memory conditional volatility and asset allocation
Pre-print version dated May 2011 issued as Discussion paper by University of Exeter. A definitive version was subsequently published in International Journal of Forecasting
Volume 29, Issue 2, April–June 2013, Pages 258–273. Available online at http://www.sciencedirect.com/In this paper, we evaluate the economic benefits that arise from allowing for long memory when forecasting the covariance matrix of returns over both short and long horizons, using the asset allocation framework of Engle and Colacito (2006) In particular, we compare the statistical and economic performances of four multivariate long memory volatility models (the long memory EWMA, long memory EWMA–DCC, FIGARCH-DCC and component GARCH-DCC models) with those of two short memory models (the short memory EWMA and GARCH-DCC models). We report two main findings. First, for longer horizon forecasts, long memory models generally produce forecasts of the covariance matrix that are statistically more accurate and informative, and economically more useful than those produced by short memory models. Second, the two parsimonious long memory EWMA models outperform the other models–both short and long memory–across most forecast horizons. These results apply to both low and high dimensional covariance matrices and both low and high correlation assets, and are robust to the choice of the estimation window
Anisotropy at the end of the cosmic ray spectrum?
The starburst galaxies M82 and NGC253 have been proposed as the primary
sources of cosmic rays with energies above eV. For energies \agt
10^{20.3} eV the model predicts strong anisotropies. We calculate the
probabilities that the latter can be due to chance occurrence. For the highest
energy cosmic ray events in this energy region, we find that the observed
directionality has less than 1% probability of occurring due to random
fluctuations. Moreover, during the first 5 years of operation at Auger, the
observation of even half the predicted anisotropy has a probability of less
than to occur by chance fluctuation. Thus, this model can be subject
to test at very small cost to the Auger priors budget and, whatever the outcome
of that test, valuable information on the Galactic magnetic field will be
obtained.Comment: Final version to be published in Physical Review
Three-dimensional random Voronoi tessellations: From cubic crystal lattices to Poisson point processes
We perturb the SC, BCC, and FCC crystal structures with a spatial Gaussian noise whose adimensional strength is controlled by the parameter a, and analyze the topological and metrical properties of the resulting Voronoi Tessellations (VT). The topological properties of the VT of the SC and FCC crystals are unstable with respect to the introduction of noise, because the corresponding polyhedra are geometrically degenerate, whereas the tessellation of the BCC crystal is topologically stable even against noise of small but finite intensity. For weak noise, the mean area of the perturbed BCC and FCC crystals VT increases quadratically with a. In the case of perturbed SCC crystals, there is an optimal amount of noise that minimizes the mean area of the cells. Already for a moderate noise (a>0.5), the properties of the three perturbed VT are indistinguishable, and for intense noise (a>2), results converge to the Poisson-VT limit. Notably, 2-parameter gamma distributions are an excellent model for the empirical of of all considered properties. The VT of the perturbed BCC and FCC structures are local maxima for the isoperimetric quotient, which measures the degre of sphericity of the cells, among space filling VT. In the BCC case, this suggests a weaker form of the recentluy disproved Kelvin conjecture. Due to the fluctuations of the shape of the cells, anomalous scalings with exponents >3/2 is observed between the area and the volumes of the cells, and, except for the FCC case, also for a->0. In the Poisson-VT limit, the exponent is about 1.67. As the number of faces is positively correlated with the sphericity of the cells, the anomalous scaling is heavily reduced when we perform powerlaw fits separately on cells with a specific number of faces
Asymptotically Safe Gravitons in Electroweak Precision Physics
Asymptotic safety offers a field theory based UV completion to gravity. For
low Planck scales, gravitational effects on low-energy precision observables
cannot be neglected. We compute the contribution to the rho parameter from
asymptotically safe gravitons and find that in contrast to effective theory,
constraints on models with more than three extra dimensions are significantly
weakened. The relative size of the trans-Planckian contribution increases
proportional to the number of extra dimensions.Comment: Published version; added references and additional minor changes

Unitary Standard Model from Spontaneous Dimensional Reduction and Weak Boson Scattering at the LHC
Spontaneous dimensional reduction (SDR) is a striking phenomenon predicted by
a number of quantum gravity approaches which all indicate that the spacetime
dimensions get reduced at high energies. In this work, we formulate an
effective theory of electroweak interactions based upon the standard model,
incorporating the spontaneous reduction of space-dimensions at TeV scale. The
electroweak gauge symmetry is nonlinearly realized with or without a Higgs
boson. We demonstrate that the SDR ensures good high energy behavior and
predicts unitary weak boson scattering. For a light Higgs boson of mass 125GeV,
the TeV-scale SDR gives a natural solution to the hierarchy problem. Such a
light Higgs boson can have induced anomalous gauge couplings from the TeV-scale
SDR. We find that the corresponding WW scattering cross sections become unitary
at TeV scale, but exhibit different behaviors from that of the 4d standard
model. These can be discriminated by the WW scattering experiments at the LHC.Comment: 38pp, Eur.Phys.J.(in Press); extended discussions for testing non-SM

Detecting a stochastic gravitational wave background with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna
The random superposition of many weak sources will produce a stochastic
background of gravitational waves that may dominate the response of the LISA
(Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) gravitational wave observatory. Unless
something can be done to distinguish between a stochastic background and
detector noise, the two will combine to form an effective noise floor for the
detector. Two methods have been proposed to solve this problem. The first is to
cross-correlate the output of two independent interferometers. The second is an
ingenious scheme for monitoring the instrument noise by operating LISA as a
Sagnac interferometer. Here we derive the optimal orbital alignment for
cross-correlating a pair of LISA detectors, and provide the first analytic
derivation of the Sagnac sensitivity curve.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures. Significant changes to the noise estimate
