Embedding Witt rings of Dedekind domains
AbstractLet W(R) denote Harrison's Witt ring of the commutative ring R. In case R is a field of characteristic ≠2, this is the classical Witt ring based on anisotropic quadratic forms. In this note we determine under what conditions W(R) is embedded in W(S) for certain Dedekind domains R ⊂ S. In particular, an answer is given in case R and S are the integers in algebraic number fields K and L, respectively, with (L: K) odd
Isospin splitting in heavy baryons and mesons
A recent general analysis of light-baryon isospin splittings is updated and
extended to charmed baryons.
The measured and splittings stand out as being difficult
to understand in terms of two-body forces alone.
We also discuss heavy-light mesons; though the framework here is necessarily
less general, we nevertheless obtain some predictions that are not strongly
model-dependent.Comment: 12 pages REVTEX 3, plus 4 uuencoded ps figures, CMU-HEP93-

Phenomenology of the Little Higgs Model
We study the low energy phenomenology of the little Higgs model. We first
discuss the linearized effective theory of the "littlest Higgs model" and study
the low energy constraints on the model parameters. We identify sources of the
corrections to low energy observables, discuss model-dependent arbitrariness,
and outline some possible directions of extensions of the model in order to
evade the precision electroweak constraints. We then explore the characteristic
signatures to test the model in the current and future collider experiments. We
find that the LHC has great potential to discover the new SU(2) gauge bosons
and the possible new U(1) gauge boson to the multi-TeV mass scale. Other states
such as the colored vector-like quark T and doubly-charged Higgs boson Phi^{++}
may also provide interesting signals. At a linear collider, precision
measurements on the triple gauge boson couplings could be sensitive to the new
physics scale of a few TeV. We provide a comprehensive list of the linearized
interactions and vertices for the littlest Higgs model in the appendices.Comment: 43 pages, 6 figures; v2: discussion clarified, typos corrected; v3:

A Geometry of the Generations
We propose a geometric theory of flavor based on the discrete group
, in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The
group treats three objects symmetrically, while making fundamental distinctions
between the generations. The top quark is the only heavy quark in the symmetry
limit, and the first and second generation squarks are degenerate. The
hierarchical nature of Yukawa matrices is a consequence of a sequential
breaking of .Comment: 10 pages, 1 EPS figure as uuencoded tar-compressed file, uses

Drum vortons in high density QCD
Recently it was shown that high density QCD supports of number of topological
defects. In particular, there are U(1)_Y strings that arise due to K^0
condensation that occurs when the strange quark mass is relatively large. The
unique feature of these strings is that they possess a nonzero K^+ condensate
that is trapped on the core. In the following we will show that these strings
(with nontrivial core structure) can form closed loops with conserved charge
and currents trapped on the string worldsheet. The presence of conserved
charges allows these topological defects, called vortons, to carry angular
momentum, which makes them classically stable objects. We also give arguments
demonstrating that vortons carry angular momentum very efficiently (in terms of
energy per unit angular momentum) such that they might be the important degrees
of freedom in the cores of neutron stars.Comment: 11 pages, accepted for publication in Physical Review
Classical stability of U(1)_A domain walls in dense matter QCD
It was recently shown that there exists metastable U(1)_A domain wall
configurations in high-density QCD (\mu >> 1 GeV). In the following we will
assess the stability of such non-trivial field configurations at intermediate
densities (\mu < 1 GeV). The existence of such configurations at intermediate
densities could have interesting consequences for the physics of neutron stars
with high core density.Comment: 13 pages, 2 Postscript figures, typos correcte
Non-perturbative equivalences among large N gauge theories with adjoint and bifundamental matter fields
We prove an equivalence, in the large N limit, between certain U(N) gauge
theories containing adjoint representation matter fields and their orbifold
projections. Lattice regularization is used to provide a non-perturbative
definition of these theories; our proof applies in the strong coupling, large
mass phase of the theories. Equivalence is demonstrated by constructing and
comparing the loop equations for a parent theory and its orbifold projections.
Loop equations for both expectation values of single-trace observables, and for
connected correlators of such observables, are considered; hence the
demonstrated non-perturbative equivalence applies to the large N limits of both
string tensions and particle spectra.Comment: 40 pages, JHEP styl
Dicyclic Horizontal Symmetry and Supersymmetric Grand Unification
It is shown how to use as horizontal symmetry the dicyclic group in a supersymmetric unification where
one acts on the first and second families, in a horizontal doublet, and
the other acts on the third. This can lead to acceptable quark masses and
mixings, with an economic choice of matter supermultiplets, and charged lepton
masses can be accommodated.Comment: 10 pages, LaTe
