Xanthine oxidase inactivation attenuates postocclusion shock after descending thoracic aorta occlusion and reperfusion in rabbits
Abstract“Declamping shock” is observed after aortic crossclamping, with hypovolemia, hypotension, and metabolic acidemia invariably present. We hypothesized that oxidants derived from xanthine oxidase influence the resuscitative interventions required to maintain baseline hemodynamic and acid-base status after aortic occlusion and reperfusion in rabbits. We also hypothesized that inactivation of xanthine oxidase with sodium tungstate could reduce systemic injury as assessed by the release of lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase. To test these hypotheses, we established aortic occlusion in rabbits (n = 10, standard diet; n = 8, tungstate diet) for 40 minutes by inflation of a 4F Fogarty catheter in the descending thoracic aorta followed by 2 hours of reperfusion. Sham-operated rabbits (n = 10, standard diet; n = 9, tungstate diet) served as controls. Tungstate-pretreated rabbits required significantly less Ringer's solution (28%), phenylephrine (68%), and sodium bicarbonate (30%) during reperfusion (p < 0.005). Lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase release during reperfusion was significantly attenuated by tungstate pretreatment (p < 0.05). Tungstate pretreatment resulted in plasma xanthine oxidase activities significantly lower than those in the sham group administered a standard diet (p = 0.007). Resuscitation requirements and systemic injury were reduced by inactivation of xanthine oxidase in a rabbit model that simulates the situation of human thoracic aorta operations. Quantum-classical transition of the escape rate of uniaxial antiferromagnetic particles in an arbitrarily directed field
Quantum-classical escape rate transition has been studied for uniaxial
antiferromagnetic particles with an arbitrarily directed magnetic field. In the
case that the transverse and longitudinal fileds coexist, we calculate the
phase boundary line between first- and second-order transitions, from which
phase diagrams can be obtained. It is shown that the effects of the applied
longitudinal magnetic field on quantum-classical transition vary greatly for
different relative magnitudes of the non-compensation.Comment: to be appeared in Phys. Rev.
Quantum dynamics of crystals of molecular nanomagnets inside a resonant cavity
It is shown that crystals of molecular nanomagnets exhibit enhanced magnetic
relaxation when placed inside a resonant cavity. Strong dependence of the
magnetization curve on the geometry of the cavity has been observed, providing
evidence of the coherent microwave radiation by the crystals. A similar
dependence has been found for a crystal placed between Fabry-Perot
superconducting mirrors. These observations open the possibility of building a
nanomagnetic microwave laser pumped by the magnetic field
Asymmetric Lineshape due to Inhomogeneous Broadening of the Crystal-Field Transitions in Mn12ac Single Crystals
The lineshape of crystal-field transitions in single crystals of Mn12ac
molecular magnets is determined by the magnetic history. The absorption lines
are symmetric and Gaussian for the non-magnetized state obtained by zero-field
cooling (zfc). In the magnetized state which is reached when the sample is
cooled in a magnetic field (fc), however, they are asymmetric even in the
absence of an external magnetic field. These observations are quantitatively
explained by inhomogeneous symmetrical (Gaussian) broadening of the
crystal-field transitions combined with a contribution of off-diagonal
components of the magnetic susceptibility to the effective magnetic

Free flux flow resistivity in strongly overdoped high-T_c cuprate; purely viscous motion of the vortices in semiclassical d-wave superconductor
We report the free flux flow (FFF) resistivity associated with a purely
viscous motion of the vortices in moderately clean d-wave superconductor
Bi:2201 in the strongly overdoped regime (T_c=16K) for a wide range of the
magnetic field in the vortex state. The FFF resistivity is obtained by
measuring the microwave surface impedance at different microwave frequencies.
It is found that the FFF resistivity is remarkably different from that of
conventional s-wave superconductors. At low fields (H<0.2H_c2) the FFF
resistivity increases linearly with H with a coefficient which is far larger
than that found in conventional s-wave superconductors. At higher fields, the
FFF resistivity increases in proportion to \sqrt H up to H_c2. Based on these
results, the energy dissipation mechanism associated with the viscous vortex
motion in "semiclassical" d-wave superconductors with gap nodes is discussed.
Two possible scenarios are put forth for these field dependence; the
enhancement of the quasiparticle relaxation rate and the reduction of the
number of the quasiparticles participating the energy dissipation in d-wave

Detailed single crystal EPR lineshape measurements for the single molecule magnets Fe8Br and Mn12-ac
It is shown that our multi-high-frequency (40-200 GHz) resonant cavity
technique yields distortion-free high field EPR spectra for single crystal
samples of the uniaxial and biaxial spin S = 10 single molecule magnets (SMMs)
[Mn12O12(CH3COO)16(H2O)4].2CH3COOH.4H2O and [Fe8O2(OH)12(tacn)6]Br8.9H2O. The
observed lineshapes exhibit a pronounced dependence on temperature, magnetic
field, and the spin quantum numbers (Ms values) associated with the levels
involved in the transitions. Measurements at many frequencies allow us to
separate various contributions to the EPR linewidths, including significant
D-strain, g-strain and broadening due to the random dipolar fields of
neighboring molecules. We also identify asymmetry in some of the EPR lineshapes
for Fe8, and a previously unobserved fine structure to some of the EPR lines
for both the Fe8 and Mn12 systems. These findings prove relevant to the
mechanism of quantum tunneling of magnetization in these SMMs.Comment: Phys. Rev. B, accepted with minor revision
Quantum transport through STM-lifted single PTCDA molecules
Using a scanning tunneling microscope we have measured the quantum
conductance through a PTCDA molecule for different configurations of the
tip-molecule-surface junction. A peculiar conductance resonance arises at the
Fermi level for certain tip to surface distances. We have relaxed the molecular
junction coordinates and calculated transport by means of the Landauer/Keldysh
approach. The zero bias transmission calculated for fixed tip positions in
lateral dimensions but different tip substrate distances show a clear shift and
sharpening of the molecular chemisorption level on increasing the STM-surface
distance, in agreement with experiment.Comment: accepted for publication in Applied Physics
Eureka and beyond: mining's impact on African urbanisation
This collection brings separate literatures on mining and urbanisation together at a time when both artisanal and large-scale mining are expanding in many African economies. While much has been written about contestation over land and mineral rights, the impact of mining on settlement, notably its catalytic and fluctuating effects on migration and urban growth, has been largely ignored. African nation-states’ urbanisation trends have shown considerable variation over the past half century. The current surge in ‘new’ mining countries and the slow-down in ‘old’ mining countries are generating some remarkable settlement patterns and welfare outcomes. Presently, the African continent is a laboratory of national mining experiences. This special issue on African mining and urbanisation encompasses a wide cross-section of country case studies: beginning with the historical experiences of mining in Southern Africa (South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe), followed by more recent mineralizing trends in comparatively new mineral-producing countries (Tanzania) and an established West African gold producer (Ghana), before turning to the influence of conflict minerals (Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone)

Using screen video capture software to aide and inform cognitive interviewing
Web-based surveys are a salient tool in the repertoire of social and behavioral scientists. The increase in web-based surveys is understandable considering the distinct advantages offered, including: (a) lower costs and reduced labor time, (b) ability to directly transfer data into statistical packages (reducing coding errors), (c) customization options enabling more attractive presentation, (d) ability to reduce respondent burden by embedding skip patterns, and (e) access to larger sample sizes in different geographic regions. It is important to note, however, that administering web-based surveys also introduces distinct sources of error (e.g., coverage, sampling and non-response). Regardless of format (e.g., paper-and-pencil or web-based), specific, prescribed steps must be followed when constructing an instrument in order to reduce survey error and lend credence to the data collected before subsequent analysis is performed. One of those crucial stages integral to the pretesting process is cognitive interviewing. Cognitive interviewing is a qualitative process, encompassing two main techniques: think aloud interviewing and verbal probing. Collectively, these two methods seek to (a) produce information on what the respondent is thinking while answering the questions, (b) the cognitive processes used to answer the questions, and (c) how the respondent answers the questions. The purpose of this article is to provide a practical guide outlining how Camtasia, a screen video capture software, can aide and inform the cognitive interview process
